Hello Troops!
well I still had a good time - not great but a good time!
I rushed around like a blue-arsed fly on Thursday finishing customers packages and then turned to the trip at about 2pm. In three hours flat I had everything I thought I needed - or could get away with - and headed off. I hit a major accident within 15 miles and lost nearly 2-hours but that just made the twilight ride through mid-east wales traffic free! I pitched the tent at 11pm which as it turned out was next to Tony King, my Polish trip partner!
the first day of riding was a great opener and as usual; Ed - our guide - didn't make a wrong move all day. the riding was two-lane cross country and you had to fight against the natural granite of the mountain which was what was making the track the challenge that it was. there were river crossings aplenty and I shall save the shame of those that went under - or nearly!
we went for a meal together in the evening and the swedes told us a bit more inside information about the Husaberg factory that they know about. they really do ride those 300s 2Ts well!
day two (saturday) and we woke to steady drizzle, Greg had gone but I think three more turned up including Cypher of course!. I knew the Swedes would like to go with Fraser (i.e the tougher the better) I did too but was prepared to go in either group to balance the numbers. 4 - 7 then. I made the mistake of pushing ****** into our run. for some reason I'd not looked at his rear tyre which was nearly bald! 4-7 it should have been! I thought ****** looked like the 'condemned man!'.
my bike immediately started cutting out. pulling the seat off and pressing the solenoid down seemed to help but as we went on it got worse and I couldn't trust it. Fraser took us on some proper cross country 'virgin land' type stuff. it was like the welsh two-day in parts! but my bike got worse and I cut for home. If I stood up it was OK? so I rode through the rain for 20 miles stood up......!
I figured on solenoid and went and bought one from E T James but as I flicked the old one out the wires contacted the earth and I lost the battery as well! I still sorted my wet kit, cleared up, filled up the bike and waited for everyone to come in.
everyone was beaming from ear to ear and ****** had had a thoroughly good day riding with 3 x 300s and him with a bald tyre (and little legs!) so I'm glad it worked out.
Tony having jibed me non-stop then offered me his battery. he managed to convince me that it was a loose battery terminal and that was all. so I fitted his battery (he and Mike were off as was ******) so I could borrow it.
we went back to the same pub - the crown - in Rhyader town centre and had another lovely meal. our one and only newcomer for the sunday was Matt, a friend of Ed's and the three of us went in the Pinnock (???) Arms for a second evening.
we met two sassy Welsh women, happily married but out on the town. they were stood at the toiled door checking all the men's "tackle" as they came out of the loo. they'd start by clamming the poor man between the two of them and then check their manhood for weight and composition! it was funny as hell and these girls had everyone crying with laughter. the men loved it even more and were 'in' on the joke.
there was also a women's (I'll refrain from calling them "Ladies"!) Hen night in the pub and a disco so it was great! later as the pub closed I did two of my favourite songs. the first is called Dia (say: Die) the motorbike man. it's about a motorbike man from the Rhondda and seeing as we were 10 miles from the Rhondda they phuqin L-O-V-E-D IT! I had the whole pub joining in.
the second song is called the 'Alphabet Song' and that also went down a bundle as they all joined in! by now we were S***faced. we crawled back and as I looked for Matt he went over the edge of the steep hill and fell some 30 metres. and do you know what? he was so pissed he was OK! don't you always find that?
I then had to try and get him up the hill and we just laid on our faces laughing. I think we took 15-minutes to get back up. every time we made a metre we fell down two!
the next day I got up a bit late: for obvious reasons and rushed to eat and be ready. just 8 of us for the last day: a most disappointing turn out.......
after some great trails with Cypher (Fraser) it came time to split and most wanted to go with Fraser for some tough stuff. I though, didn't want to impede the Swede's if my bike went wrong again so I chose Ed and Matt for some of the easier lanes. Ed's ride was the perfect third day ride and was nice and fairly easy rock-infested two-lane byway stuff.
however, around 2pm the bike started playing up again. it gradually got worse and worse until in the end I said we needed to head for home or else I'd be stuck in the middle of nowhere! In the end it wouldn't run at all and so I needed a tow. as it was, by taking the direct route and being towed by Matt, we still didn't get back until 6pm so I think without it: Ed would have had us out until 7-8pm!
we were at least 3 hours later than Fraser's team and they had all gone as did we three fairly soon afterwards.
I STILL HAVE:
2 MEDIUM
4 LARGE
1 EXTRA LARGE
t-SHIRTS IF ANYONE WANTS ONE?
as for all the people that called off well what can I say. some will have genuine reasons but you said you were coming and an effort was made on your behalf to get T-shirts and three and two days riding ready by Fraser and Ed.
Ed, I do know had reconnoitred the area a few times to get it right. over 20 said they were definately coming and of those twenty: a thirs said "I should think my mate will come!", well neither of you were there.........
we all deserve better.
so this is what we'll do next year. you buy your T-shirt up front as the deposit but you don't get it unless you are there!
next year I believe, we are going to try the Brecon Beacons which I did along with Mark2eo and Arkley123 in September 2011. it is fearsome riding there although the ramblers are quite an unforgiving bunch. if it is wet: it'll be the hardest yet!
I gave Ed a second T-shirt as thanks for all that he has done over these first three rides.
the trouble with anything free or something where people are making money out of a hobby is that you can't tell what their ethics are. this is one such case. but I won't let it spoil and I DIDN'T let it spoil things.
so until next year: cymi bach!
regards
Taffy
