Hi Taffy,

How was your trip to Wales?
Are there any changes in the plans for the Force Ride?
Is the place to be for the force ride still the The Ancient Briton near Abercrave?

I have prepared my 570 last weekend, fresh nobby tires!, so I'm ready for it!

Regards,

Enrico

well the weekend was a 100% success!

I have all the routes sorted and the accomadation has been checked out as well!

we also have a guide for at least one day in a guy named Will. Will took us around for these past two days and is an excellent leader and thoroughly nice chap!

he has volunteered to take us around the various places. the riding he does is the safer stuff as he would call it and not daft. also, he doesn't like totally illegal.

so because there are less than 11 days to go it is time to be counted!!!!!!

we have two from Holland
Fred from Oz - are you still in?
anyone else?

there is a web site named VDSR (valley dual sport riders) and I joined them, they're a really great bunch. typically sharp-witted Welshmen and very outward going! they will have video of the weekends ride.......

we stopped for really good food and drink in the most picturesque of Welsh villages. there weren't as many gates as I expected, both days we started with 9 riders and the gate opening was easy enough.

the rivers were easy to cross and will be even easier in 11 days.

we did sarn helen, the sunken road and the "targa florida" or whatever it's called! which was brilliant, well hell, I don't know all the names and it is unfair to put them up here as arseholes will use it against us somewhere.

if we get good weather I think that it is going to be excellent....the night life should be good too with 150 other riders there and abouts! (they are doing the taffydakar)

my hotel this weekend is 8 miles from the ancient briton where they will all be camping. I intend to camp. the ancient briton has rooms.

the 'new white swan' at ystradfera, where i stayed - was superb. run by a keen roard biker named Gareth (known as garshell). the night life in the pub is said to be the best in the whole valley.

I'll get you all some links later....must do some work!

regards

Taffy

has anyone heard anything from Fred?

just top say we have room for anyone wishing to join us. especially on the Friday.
the routes on the Saturday and Sunday have been organised by the South Wales TRA.

Easter 2014 with VDSR - YouTube
the u tube link has gone?

here's a short clip of both days riding last weekend. I've the Husaberg/white helmet.

the deep puddles one after the other are on the 'sunken road'.

the tight left and though the stream on the Monday is part of the 'strata florida'. 3 months ago a landrover got swept away at the crossing and a little girl lost her life.

I'll try and get some photos up.

bit of advice for a first timer who's been on his face: rear brake only....

TTR250 packs up for Will our leader so I bump start it for him, later in the day the starter motor comes back again...

we should have "listened!"

and this is why! even big Pet has never seen such a badly washed out road....

look how deep it is

after I'd slithered up the earthen bank and got parked up, I came back to help. all we had was this tiny piece of wood to get 8 bikes across with

6 left ewxhausted but I carried on with big Pet and Mark. we rode to a Cafe in Llandovery (I think?) and had a cuppa to finish.

great ride!

upon arriving on Thursday at the Ancient Briton Pub at Abercraf in South Wales I was greeted by Enrico and I promised to join himself and Ap for the evening meal in the pub.

first, i had to put up the tent - how hard could it be right? well I'd brought two tents and three sets of poles and had downright forgotten which set was needed. first false call then another then finally the right set of poles, then I decided the tent faced the wrong way so I turned it the right way and proceeded to put everything inside.

I met up with Ap and Enrico inside the pub and also the rep from AJP - Craig, one of the head organisers of the taffy Dakar - Christian and head honcho - Jason!

Jason had given me routes for the "Ammanford Run", then the "Brechfa Run" and little did I know it but that the Rhyader run that Ed supplied had also started with Jason.

I use hard copy still and have to confess it is a while since I used maps for virgin country, I use them more for alternatives when days are a bit short or we are slow etc.

Day 1 - Ammanford Run
meeting at the New White Swan on the first morning I had the hearty breakfast of the condemned and met the landlord I was with just 11 days earlier - Garshell! as said before, the New White Swan, Ystralfera is an excellent Hotel and good value with a rocking nightlife!

setting off I mentioned that I'd get lost early on (Rhiwfawr) if at any time and sure enough I couldn't even find the second run! Enrico (a lot) and Ap (a bit) were closing gates while I was opening them and the boys soon found that this is a hard ol job and not a lot f fun.

I then took us into a farm yard, not so good... then we went under some wind turbines and then headed north to Glannaman. Just a couple lanes had to sustain us as there was a fare bit of roadwork at the beginning. then in Ammanford i followed the main road instead of cutting around the town - wrong move! - we hit traffic lights and road blockages etc and by the time we left town i didn't know it but I had swopped to DAY2 - the Brechfa run on my map as the two days overlapped here.

realising my mistake only at the end of the map, I felt very disappointed and told the lads I'd screwed up, anyway, we headed back and east to Llandielo and had tea and cakes before fueling and heading in the correct direction up towards Talsarn the highest point. Both Enrico and Ap had very high tyre pressures and you can see this in all the day 1 videos as they struggled to steer them.

we sat on top of the mountain at Rhiwiau next and watched the Red Kytes glide on the thermal and upward currents and admired the beauty of these birds of prey. the lanes were either 'good' or 'bloody hard'! we worked our way up to Llangadog and then Talsarn which was really tough and had a river crossing at the bottom.

we now headed north again to Llandovery before east to the Roman Road. we stopped in front of a gate that said "NO ENTRY" and in the logic of minds that presume the wrong thing - we entered the farm and found it was wrong anyway! well we do like to go where we are banned so to speak - purely on the basis that it must be legal and it is just someone protecting something good! = reverse logic!

next came the drop down Motel Hill. I warned the lads about this one and invited them into the clutches of the devil as I sent them down the steepest of hills which is strewn with 30cm bolders everywhere!

the next thing: Enrico's feet are horizontal and somewhere around the corner!

we had gradually increased the ratio of lanes to roads as they day went and the Roman Road really boosted this and now it was going to get better: we did a few more lanes before dropping out of Sennybridge and onto Sarn Helen. this was initially enjoyable but got tougher in parts as we got to a river crossing with 30cm ledges on the otherside. Ap copped out but Enrico and I had a go. Enrico made it up with the 'screaming tyre' technique while I failed with the "bald tyres can't" technique!

by the time we got back it was late and the campsite was filling for Saturday's Taffydakar Rally. I met the lads later for the first of three nights in the Indian Restaurant in Ystalfera. It was agreed that Enrico would lead the next day using Sat/nav and this was a worry off my mind.

day 2 - Brechfa Forest run
We tried to leave the campsite early but the organisers were having none of it, we had our photos taken as if entrants welcome entrants but were later greeted as 'the bloody foreigners'! LOL!!!

we headed off in a similar direction up to Ammanford as the day before but this time visited a quarry and then led some of the TD entrants over the moor that we knew only too well from the day before. the road bikes were completely sideways and I felt then and feel now that the TD is a very good advert for getting an enduro bike.

we headed up to 'Court Henry' where we'd been the day before and then did Llanfynydd and across to the river Cothi before a beast of a climb away and directly up the mountain. I dare not stop as I crawled past first Enrico and then Ap and got to the top with the radiator telling me that the engine was hot!

just as Ap came into site his bike shot sideways and he needed to summon all his strength to get it pointing up again. 10-minutes later Enrico came around the corner with the FE570 close to boiling and after getting stuck on a rock, both he and the bike cooled for 10-minutes!

alas my bike had been laying over far enough to let the fail drain directly out and on to the ground. we were all short of fuel now but I was in trouble so we made a B-line for Llanfynydd and asked for the nearest fuel station - only 10 miles!

after 5 miles I ran out of fuel and Ap gave me a pull to Whitemill just to the east of Carmarthen. filled up and fed up we retraced our steps and set off again and entered the Brechfa Forest. Enrico was like a kid out of his play pen here and fairly 'whooped' and hollered' as he shot around the forest having a great time! the riding was VERY good especially in the North-East corner near the end.

we then dropped to Llangadog and did Talsarn again, I wanted to do ti in the opposite direction to make it a 'killer' but all were saved from my obstinacy when it was pointed out that we would leave the triangle at the southern end anyway...

we then got lost in a farm yard before the old 'hardcopy' came out and got us back on track. next we did a virgin field with many gates and Ap wasn't too happy with that so agreed to meet us around the other side. Enrico and I got through but there was no Ap?

around this time I lost a gearlever against a rock and had to change gear by hand which made it a bit interesting but only 2 gear changes were need to do either roads in 6th or byways in 4th so it wasn't too bad.

the little 400 was being brilliant, what a bike! it started first or second kick and could be left in gear with either brake on as I reached with the other hand to open a gate. the 400 is just soooo light and I want for nothing else. the new racing ignition is without fault and the bike when it is given 100% throttle in the mid-revs is much, much stronger.

we carried on alone and then went over the Brecon beacons via Brynamman and got back some 30 minutes before Ap who had had a puncture but had no levers!

anyone who know me knows I like beer and I was tempted to have a few but what with the full meal and now two long days I just knew that the next day needed my best attention and so i went to bed and had to listen to the disco for the next hour or two. perhaps I should have just had a beer!

Day 3 - Rhyader Run

this was down as the big one, a long day! Alison my assistant at work had sent the run to Enrico and both he and Ap had it on their Garmins. I had invited a friend 'Lisa' along and we agreed to meet her at the Tudor Cafe in Llandovery for 10.30am. as true gents we decided to get there first but we didn't calculate on dodging Motel hill from the south! THE UPHILL RIDE.

so we arived 50-minutes early, fueled up and then had an excellent fried breakfast. Poor Lisa arrived on time at 10.30am but the boys were so keen to go, and I know Lisa could see that so kindly agreed to go straight out for the ride even though her poor tortured soul looked emaciated blah blah blah!

we left Llandovery and did lots of roadwork passing through Rhandir-Mwyn or "Randyman" as I prefer to call it.

we then road North and climbed through the evergreen tree'd forest called Tywi Forect around a lake names Llyn Brianne Resevior. it really was majestic and again in a forest Enrico was having a great time giving the bike 'full chat'!

we did this forestry work for many, many miles with no roadwork at all - this was more like it and then got to Pontrhdfendegaid which is the start of the Strata Florida.

after a few miles we were in the Strata Florida meeting can-am quads, Landrovers and other riders. the river is quite low right now but the puddles on the track were still deep enough and sometimes my engine couldn't be heard at all as it went under the water.

we then rode the edge of the Caerwen Resevior and dropped below the dam named Cerrigcwplau and started an innocuios Byway. alas Enrico was stopped dead in his tracks by a bolder under water and went over to the left into the deep water rather like something from Laurel & Hardy as he made no attempt to get a leg out!

the drowned bike was suitably rescued by drying the airfilter, emptying the exhaust, removing the plug and spinning the motor and then starting it. alas the engine definetely had water in the oil so Enrico and Ap cut back to the dam and then rode into Rhayader where they found a KTM dealer (E T James) and did an oil and filter change.

Lisa and I finished this and another trail before joining them and with perfect timing we all bought fuel and ate. The resevior ride isn't as good as Monk's Trod but this is presently TRO'd and so was a 'no-no'. next time though....

dropping south out of Rhayader Lisa led us as we went through Llanwrthwl and Beulah. Enrico led us in someone's back yard and the lady was NOT at the door to invite us in for tea!!!!

moving on we entered 'the sunken road' which is in the Crychan Forest and flooded out. this then took us to the Army range at Eppynt and we did one more lane out of Llywel and a lane over Trecastle before Lisa departed back to her car.

we carried on down to Sennybridge and then headed for the beginning of Sarn Helen for the final ride.

Alas the boys didn't want to do this as we had had three very hard days. So I led us away from a wrong turn and at the last moment as i was to pass the entry for the 'Sarn' stopped, and told the lads I really wanted to do it even if it was alone!

no hard feelings - I was doing what I wanted to do! So for them that was the end but for me I had Sarn Helen to do alone and that river crossing that had given me my only defeat of the three days.

the rear chain had jumped when crossing a ford 30-minutes before but now as I climbed the first hill it jumped again so i rode like a fairy and nursed the bike up and over every rock strewn hill. The chain had suddenly just gone. the chain was continually jumping now and I had one last BIG one! the climb out of the river bed!

I carefully planned my route but I couldn't see a better one than I had two days before....and I had the same result! one dab.

what a joy to ride these three days had been and what a shame so many people had missed it!

I had the third and last Curry with Ap and Enrico who had been great company for the 3 days and I hope to take up their offer of a ride in France sometime. they mention that Peimont in Italy is awesome so that is on my list of 'to do's'!

I spent the rest of the evening drinking a few beers with those left over from the Rally as the two Dutchmen had to be up at 5am to leave. the organisers continued yo make me welcome and I must say staying on the campsite WAS a good move even though the New White Swan would have also been good but with 150 rally bikers on one site - I think I made the right choice!

perhaps I'll organise a force ride next year, maybe I'll leave it for 2 years but I'd like to see the eastern end of the Beacons.

if you are interested in 2015 - let me know as 3 was a poor turnout this year.

and now I'm off to get up-to-date with my own Garmin...it's the way to the future!

regards

Taffy
