Timing chain tensioner -09

Is there anyone but me who has trouble with the hydraulic timing chain tensioner? It worked fine for a couple of hours but then it started to rattle at idle and low revs with the engine warmed up.Replaced it with a new tensioner but after only a couple of hours it´s the same story again. This is what I´m talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ckqUpwB ... re=related
An aftermarket tensioner is available from Dirttricks http://www.dirttricks.com/timing_chain_tensioner.htm but is this the solution or a waste of money? The bike is a -09 450 with 11 hours on the clock.

Id say take it to husaberg and tell em to get it sorted mate, fitting aftermarket parts on something so new is a no-no, warrenty issues etcetc

Right.By fitting that Dirttricks replacement, you break the warranty terms and conditions.Go th the dealer and tell them! It's also free for you.

I will continue with the oem tensioner and hoping that no.3 will hold up better.Changing tensioner twice as often as oil is not something I will keep on doing  And I´ve got them as warranty claims(so far)...

I put a Dirt Tricks tensioner on my 530 and it solved the problem. I would be suprised if the two motors were not very similar. KTM has not fixed the problem from last year. So what makes you think that Husaberg/KTM will fix it? Get the Dirt Tricks. The down side to this is a messed up motor.

Now it´s my turn :( My new husa sounds just like the ktm on the video :(:( The bike have run for about 25 hours now.

why not pull the tensioner out and go to a mechanical adjuster. screw and locknut?

I'd think this is something Husaberg/KTM will need to address - it's not up to the owners to solve this, which clearly is something that's faulty from the factory to begin with.

These bikes are quite expensive for what you get (compare them to any give supersport bike), and the aftersale support usually consists of fcuk all (at least up here), yadda-yadda-racebike-yadda, well guess what, they're supposedly built with that in mind.

Imagine if Yamaha sold R1's with timing chain tensioners that decided to go fubar after 25 hours, do you think the owners would consider replacing them with 3rd part hardware, out of their own pocket? ;)

Nice for your engine when the timing chain goes loose and skips a few teeth only to total your top end....

now THAT was my view. sort it or lose your engine. don't use the bike or make a repair.

I agree - but I wouldn't let my Husaberg dealer have a moments worth of peace until it was sorted properly, there's no way I'd slap on a manual tensioner - what if something gives, and the non standard tensioner was brought up?
This is why we buy new bikes, to have support, and not have to worry about worldly (yet fatal) stuff like this. :)

I say don't ride it - drop it off at the dealership and get them to sort it.

New tensioners of the same sort doesn't seem to help either, I've heard about lads with several failures in a short period of time (hours between failures).

ahhm ... so whats actually going wrong with the hydraulic tensioners ?

If we knew that we could tell KTM what the problem is and/or fix them up ourselves. could wait for the factory to fix em but id not be holding my breath.....

I'm guessing some bit wears out maybe because of a sharp edge not properly dressed at assembly or a bit of metal thats too soft or an oring thats the wrong size or compound or something.

there are some serious engine heads on ktmtalk what do they reckon ?

I´m on the same track. My failed tensioners seems to lock itself in a position somewhere in the middle and then there is not enough oilpressure to move them properly.

id be rooting for the one with the biggest collective of Jugs :)

maybe the piston is too short and gets stuck sideways... another guess ha, whatever it is it can't be impossible to sort out?

RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Timing chain tensioner -

Today I installed a new tensioner and now the sound is gone :)

at this moment I have a 450 & 570 in the stable, both had the problem, the 570 even after only a couple of hours. I still run the same tensioners, here's my remedy:
take out the tensioner, spray it liberaly with WD40, try to push it in a few times, wipe clean & put back, problem solved.
The other day the problem came back on the 570, I did the same trick and it's running great again.
Why do they stick? my guess, but it's only a guess, the oil is conteminated with small metal bits and these bits make the tensioner stick.
I will ask the importer, the guy is helpfull and perhaps he knows why they mess-up sometimes.
