My wife and I woke Thurs morning to a strong smell of gasoline in the house. When I went out to the garage I found a large fuel spill on the floor under the bike. If there had been a spark in the garage we would have a had a terrible fire.
I took the tank off and found the leak at the threaded fitting where the fuel line comes off the subframe tank. It looks like whatever compound was used on the threads is gasoline soluble. It was completely dissolved. I removed the fitting and wrapped it with teflon tape. No return of the leak overnight, but I'm not sure if the T-tape will hold up over the long term.
Anyways check your tanks guys. This could have been a real disaster.

I have been following the progress/development of your tank since February and realized then it would be a quality item which I and others would really want for our Bergs. On April 16th I asked our local Berg dealer if they would become a dealer for these and put in an order. I and nine other guys with Bergs were headed to Colorado from PA to enjoy the Rockies in the summer. I had until July to get my tank which I figured would be needed for the long days we expected and a perfect place to test the tank for others who would undoubtedly follow. Our dealer contacted you multiple times between April and July even going as far as getting an address in CO where you could drop ship the tank due to production delays. All that was understandable although disappointing. Colorado came and went. Many more attempts to secure the tank failed after our return from CO. I just can't figure out why you would not want a very strong contingent of avid Berg owners around Pgh to use your tank. Someone there had told our dealer that they were more than happy to have a dealer interest (months ago) and set up an open account to handle the order.
This is a copy of the dealer's most recent communication with sales at 70 Degree Racing which got no response;
We still want the tank from our April 16th order. I've been told others have their tanks, we're still wondering what's going on. I've heard that orders have #'s assigned to them, that they are prioritized with that #. I've heard that consumers orders will be filled 100% and no dealer orders will go out as long as consumers orders exist unfilled. Having said that, what's chances of a tank any time soon. Just an ETA. Thanks General Mike http://www.fivestarcycle.com
This is a copy of today's email from yet another request for the April 16th order.
Al, FYI, I'll give this one more try, today, I hate to give up, although it's long since reached a point of diminishing returns. This is the most recent communication I've been using. I'm going to wait until Monday. I'll get with you then, or you may try me anytime. Sure do appreciate your patience. TNX Gen. Mike
Is it possible to get a little help resolving this issue?
Thank you for your time and your dedication to this worthwhile project.
that's peeetsboorg, dale.but I don't know what PGH

Scout said:Hey everyone, just another heads up on the subframe tank. I installed mine several weeks ago right before a multiday ride I had planned. The install went ok except i had some dificultly getting the top subframe support to line up. I think it is my bike though and not the subframe tank, as I had similar problems with the original. I filled it up and took it for a test drive and everything checked out. The next morning at the first break on my ride I noticed a significant fuel leak from my bike. Upon inspection it wasn't leaking from any connection point were I thought might be a problem, but it just kept on leaking. I finally traced it back to the vent hose. When I routed the vent hose down throught the airbox, it must have been touching the pipe in a spot that was not easy to see. My pipe melted a hole in the vent line and since the tank was still pretty full, fuel was in the vent line and leaking out. The pipe must not have gotten hot enough on the test ride to melt it all of the way through or the vent ine shifted. Luckly I was able to cut the line where it was melted and install the T from on top of the main tank, plug one leg of the T and run it along the air box and out the corner of the seat and it seamed to work just fine that way. Thankfully this allowed me to continue on an epic 2 day ride. So just be careful where you are routing the vent line and keep it away from the pipe. Otherwise it is a great product and it sure eases the mind to have the extra gallon on board.
My issue turned out to be the checkball in the gas cap. It wasn't allowing the tank vents to work together. As soon as i pooped the cap the fuel from the overfilled subtank started to seek the same level as the main tank.petem said:I thought that too at first, but then I realised it was only when the bike was leaned over on the side stand - as soon as I stood the bike upright and looked at it directly side-on, they were at the same level. I think it may be that the widths of the tanks where you're looking at them are slightly different and when they're sloping it makes it look like the fuel's at a different height.Serpexc said:I have noticed that my subframe tank will hold a different level than the main tank. Is that normal?
Of course they really are at different heights while you're filling up until the fuel works its way through, but after that on my bike they've been level whenever I've checked with the bike upright. It'd be interesting to know why if yours really is on different levels when the bike's upright.
