Thanks Cypher and CMSprofessor,
Just wanted to mention here that John Wiser is my partner in crime with the tank, and he is the one who takes care of all the sales, packaging, and most of the customer care.
He worked out the fuel pump holder and venting. I did the prototyping fitting and mold adjustments to the tank/sub frame itself. I bet I took my bike apart and put it back together again over 100 times getting that subframe to fit properly! The hardest part was getting the rear fender lines to match up correctly.
Thanks again for accolades for the tank. It has been a really cool experience to be a part of making a product like this that makes a great bike even better.
I never have to worry about conserving fuel, and can wick it up any time I feel like it. I just got back from FR 4, and a three week road trip that included more riding in addition to FR 4. I rode in Utah on the Piute ATV trail (not as bad as it sounds, some of it is actually kind of tough), and rode another 5 days in Kennedy Meadows.
In Utah when I rode the Piute trail, I did a total of 120 miles one day, leaving at 1400 hrs and arriving back at home at 2130 hours. At about 65 miles into my ride and the farthest part north I decided that I better drop down to Koosheram and get gas before heading back. Koosheram has one gas, and one diesel pump. They only had 85 octane fuel, and my bike took 1.8 gallons, mind you there was a few long sections of dirt road with high speeds and large throttle openings. Still 36mpg is not bad considering.
So I mixed 1.8 gallons of 85 octane with 1.3 gallons of 91 non ethanol gasoline that I got in Gunnison, and my bike ran fantastic! Someone out there can possibly tell me what the resultant octane was with that mix. I was riding between 8-9K feet, and about 80F. On the ride back it was black diamond ATV trails (again, don't laugh they weren't that easy) at night. This was the first time I got to really try out the Trail Tech X2 HID light. The 2" spot never failed, but, the 4" flood did not have enough cooling at the low speeds I was riding at (told you the trails weren't that easy) and would cut out occasionally-forcing me to stop at a convenient location to cycle the switch and get it going again. I think that if I was to remove the rock guard it would give more cooling to the 4", and it would no longer cut out.
However, this light provides great lighting for speeds up to about 50-55 mph, anything above that and I would have been overriding my ability to react to what I could see. This is a great light, and I'm sure that once Barshoe get's his sorted he will be really happy.
On the last leg of my trip I stopped at Kennedy Meadows for 5 days, spending 4 days riding about 200 miles of single track there. Again, I made some big loops enjoying the great riding there, and videoing all of the bike trails there. Cobalt blue skies, and day time temps in the high 70's. In four days of riding I saw 3 riders in one group once, pretty much had the whole place to myself-awesome.
I made some big loops with the longest being around 70 miles, again, never had to worry about fuel, and, still had plenty left over when I got done. On the 70 mile day I figured I had enough fuel left to do another 40 miles-at least.
Didn't mean to prattle on here, but, just wanted to convey how cool it is to have that extra gallon of fuel and how much more flexibility it gives this great bike!
