To be more succinct Mr. Taffy. Riding in Southwest Colorado your closest major airports are Phoenix (8 hrs,) Salt Lake City (6 hrs.) Denver (6 hrs.) Las Vegas (8 hrs.). Every kind of riding from dual sport to mountain goat trails that will make your arse pucker. Reasonable proximity of camping sites to town ( food, gas, lodging, bars etc...) . Now also being reasonably close to central Utah I could be convinced to go have a look see at this Piute trails business and give a first hand account, anybody else up for that ?

Has anyone herd of the Piute trail in central Utah?

All of it is at least atv-width. zero singletrack whatsoever. Most of what I rode was dirt road that was easily passable by 2wd pickup. It would be fun on a loaded-down dr650, maybe 2-up. I found what I saw pretty dull on a dirtbike, but other parts of the system may suck less. I was riding in the Panguitch/Kanab-ish area.

What about the idea of renting a couple toyhaulers for out-of-town guests at China Hat ( oregon) instead of Hotel? Then we could ride to/from camp easily, stock up on beer, have a big campfire, and otherwise get down and boogie.

I think that China Hat would be a great place, Boss is sure to show a good time and not lead us astray. He knows the area, the scenery is great, all levels of riding, etc.

This is an excellent idea that applies to anyplace we decide to go.

One issue that will be of concern at China Hat is there is only one camp area that I know of that has water (guard station), all the others do NOT have water available, and non of them have R/V dumps. So if we have a large group, whooping it up, getting sweaty and eating....Uh Beans (Taffys favorite), things could get....ripe?

The second situation that should also be known about China Hat, is the restrooms are pit toilets, just so you know. If we do decide to go there we may want to REALLY think out some logistics of toilet needs and water demands, as this is truly a relatively rough camping area.

I am not against having F.R.III at China Hat, is just want everybody (especially those that are going to spend some serious $ to get there) to know what to expect. Personally, I would not fly halfway around the world, to camp out without some of the creature comforts...mainly a good shower/crapper. So I guess that is the Bendberg FYI.

Aha. My bad. I thought this was a website for offroad motorcycle enthusiasts. I think you're afterthis website http://www.tkga.com/ (worksafe).

Lol.

What are we talking about, a 3 day weekend again? Surely we can poop in primitive toilets in exchange for riding cool trails right from camp. It is an unfortunate drawback to our hobby that the best trails are virtually never colocated with fine dining and 4-star hotels. If they were, the fine diners and hoteliers would petition to have those trails closed for stirring up dust and drunken hillbillies and stuff.

Thanks for the knitting web site, I put it in my favorites folder :D It's a nice hobby, you should try it.

What I am getting at is, some of the people that wish to attend this are planning to spend some SERIOUS money to come ride, we are not talking about a drive from Idaho here.

I camp out here all the time, so that is not an issue for me, and it is not an issue for most of us, hell if I want a shower I'll just run home But, it will be an issue for those that are going to take all there vacation time for the year and probably double there normal vacation budget to come. One of the things Moab has, is plenty of bathrooms and showers, China Hat does not. I am sure most of us can stay home, not shower and smell like ass without spending the money I am thinking of US as a GROUP, not as a camp out with local area riders. Hopefully you have read Taffys posts and can comprehend what he is saying.

So what are you trin to say?????????????// NO CHILLI???????????????

Not no Chili, just more alcohol, more crappers, bigger fires and good times!! Thats my style, toot toot!!

As far as China Hat is concerned, we could make this venue a comfortable and accomatable reality. Listen guys, remember your favorite ride at Disney Land as a kid... well thats China Hat! Leave it up to Boss and his crew to show a time of your life.
There is always a way to accomodate out of towners without city hotels. We'll build a Hotel China Hat if we have to! All in the name of ... good times, great people and even better riding!

Where ever we go, there we'll be! :badair:

Once again I ( we ) can make the china hat area work for all who show up!

Myself is able to offer bike's & people to help with the things that are needed such as

water & fuel for riders, It will help alot to no how many people will attend so we are able

to support everyone in the fashion that is expected! Town is only 20 mi. for those who

want to room it & the air port in portland is 175 miles from china hat.If the vote is set

for china hat I have many options to offer if not I will be limited to alot less. I hope

to just be a player again for the force ride that was an epic time for me & my bro's!!

P.S KEEP TALKING PEOPLE WERE MAKING PROGRESS!!

Here's one for Taffy. How far in advance of the ride do you need to book flights to get a reasonable fare ? Also are there certain dates/ months that are best (cheapest) for travel ? If you need to book them by summer we got a couple of monthe to decide and get to the planning. Next question for everyone, we have added a couple more Bergs to our little riding group here in Durango, but there still are those hapless honda friends of mine, they are keen to go wherever this thing ends up being. Can I bring them if they have beer ?

I do think everybody will have a great riding experience at China Hat, but I wanted everybody involved to be aware of what the camping situation is like. We can make it work!

Portable crappers can be brought in for the weekend if need be.

Portable water can brought in as well (cistern) if needed.

We all know the effect that Bobs Chile has, but we can't hold him responsible for the state of Moabs septic system (even though it was quite the coincidence that the toilets plugged after the chili feed). Oh and by the way for those chili lovers out there that have not tried Bobs chili, you are truly missing out.

I think that in order to make china hat work is going to do like Velo said and rent some R/Vs. It really is going to depend on the number of attendees as to what needs to be done though. Maybe we should start with a rough head count and hammer out a date first?

Prime China hat time is Late March to early-middle May, but usually by June it is getting pretty dry and there are two organized events being held in that time period as well, which we may or may not wish to avoid, the dates for these do not get posted until December I believe.

Stoveguy, camp would not be the same without your clan, it was quite entertaining watching you guys get that Honda running and we had a blast around the campfire with them as well.

Hope this helps, I'm gonna go knit Taffy a beer cozy.[/u]

yeah, right  good luck with that

ha! ha!" even i can't understand a word that darn brit says......!

so portland is the nearest? i don't think there is a direct flight for that one but i made a connection for houston and for phoenix before. only LV was direct for me.

as for prices, well oddly enough midweek to midweek is cheap and because the flight never fills in march it doesn't really get anymore expensive.

the season will change the costs though and i'd be pleased if we did the trip just after easter by 14 days or just before it by 14. the lack of clash with school children will help.

easter is 10 - 13 april.

what altitude is china hat at? i see the latitude so i trust the weather and temps are similar to the UK.

regards

Taffy

If I remember right, altitude is 3500 to 4500 ft, Temps in March will be lows averaging in the 20's to 30* F, Highs in the 40 to 60*F range, this can vary of course.

But how much white stuff?? is it below the snow line? cold dont matter white stuff does.

Hey Bob, That is the snow zone, and while the amounts vary from year to year, we should expect the higher trails to have some white stuff on them at least on the north facing sides of the trails. For those that have never been riding in the snow, it is kinda fun once you learn to relax, think of it as really slick mud. Our soil here does not hold moisture for very long, so once the snow melts, the dirt usually goes dry. March would be prime moist dirt time, with a chance of snow up high.

I am going out to China Hat this weekend, I will take some pics and give a trail condition report.
