08 fe650 Ignition Timing advance for better performance and starting.

A friend of mine who helped me locate a complete fc650 stator, flywheel and 2 covers told me-

"if you file out the pole pic up points slightly enabling you to advance the ignition slightly it makes a world of difference to starting and performance"

Anyone else have knowledge or adjustment amounts?

Thanks!

Hi

Never done that, so can't tell you about the results of the modification.

But if you change the strip of metal of the flywheel you will not only be changing the timing, you will changing also the duration.

In this case your CDI is also using the information of how long the strip of metal takes to pass trough the pickup coil. With this, the CDI will "know" how fast your engine is turning. And it will "respond" with a certain ignition advance.

So, if you shorten the strip of metal, it will always "deceive" your CDI with a shorter duration, so the CDI will always think the engine is turning faster.

With this, the CDI will always "respond" with more ignition advance that it was supposed to.

The effects on timing will also be different if you file the strip of metal in one side or the other or on both.

Don't know what is your objective, but with this I think you can tune it more to your objective.

Brilliant zaga ...I was wondering a question ...is there any programmable cdi for a husaberg? Are the ktm similar/can be adapted? ...ps. interesting this thread :)

I think that with more modern small-scale electronics manufacturing, people can probably DIY build a small "industrial computer" to do it. I don't know exactly, but I can imagine that it is possible. And then maybe it's out there already? As things often are?

Hi

Thanks

Yes there is, I've seen some on recent posts if you can remember

Just don't expect that they will have pre done ignition curves to this 08 bikes, probably it will be you doing it from the start, then tuning it, with trail and error.

Even HPI has programmable CDI, but there are more

Thanks for the info.

For a mod like this I want to be able to easily test and put back to stock if I want.

you are on about two different things to Big Berg. go back and read it again.

you have mounted the horse facing the wrong way! as for the rest of you not spotting it....get your eyes tested!!!!

Never tried it bigberg. interesting idea. fact is though, Husabergs are over jetted and the fuel takes longer to burn. therefore an advance could be as a result of this.

and before Zaga says what it will do, I will say it:
it won't affect higher up the revs, just that starting and idling (tickover area).

I reckon if it works after one of my jetting kits it's the business but before that I'll just believe it is burning off the fuel.

Assuming that your pick-up-coil is in a fixed position, in engine rotational direction, the leading edge of the metal strip defines your maximum advance. The trailing edge denotes your ignition base advance for engine idling. The metal strip length is your ignition advance range. Within this range you can set your ignition advance curve sampling points using a programmable CDI unit. A steep curve causes more ignition advance at lower revs, while a flat curve is the opposite.
Changing the pick-up-coil position relative to TDC manipulates your base advance angle (ignition advance at idle). Maybe less harmful for testing purpose. Alternative: You can also file the metal strip, with fixed pick up position.

Consider, always when changing angles in the ignition system (metal strip start/end, pick-up position), you'll also change the other end of the system - the metal strip will not auto-adjust! The CDI needs both signals to compute your ignition advance - both metal strip edges (effective ignition advance).

Maybe consider a programmable CDI before you tinker with your flywheel...

Hi

I know I'm talking about two different things, I thought it was clear, at least for me.

I was talking about timing and about advance.

I'm not giving Big Berg a recipe, I'm giving him the principles, so he can think about it, he will know what he wants to achieve, I don´t.

Obviously that any change like this won't affect higher revs, the max advance will be the same, you won't change it with this, but it's not true that will just affect idling, it will also affect mid range revs, and as you know those are very important in a dirt bike. This is not a road racing bike.

About the horse, sorry but it's very difficult for me to understand your analogies, sorry not English
