i was just looking at the very first husaberg and then admired the latest version .

they have come a long way ... no question

Awesome, its finally happened, but why the big change in engine configuration. Has anybody heard the engineering reasons behind such a step outside the square.
One of the big attractions of Husaberg is that they are not afraid of sticking it up market convention and do something different if it will benefit handiling etc.
So we know the change is not without good reason, or is it just an expensive form of bold new graphics.

Here is a quoted text from husaberg.de telling us all about the new bike. Clear as glas to everyone I presume.

I'll use my crappy german knowledge and translate the stuff I understand (disclaimer: I suck in german, feel free to correct me!!). Excpect several updates...

MOTOR

The heart of the new generation is the new SOHC single cylinder engine with a displacement of 448,6cc or 565cc. Besides top performance a modern and compact design and great stability was the goal of the designer. The crank closer to the CoG in favour of handling.

70° ZYLINDERWINKEL

The tilted cylinder have made it possible to place the crank some 160mm to the rear of the bike and also 100mm higher. This places the rotating mass of the crank closer to the CoG.

HUSABERG 2009 The new Husaberg generation 2009 means the beginning of a new era for the Enduro world. _ revolutionary technology and a complete new appearance will the Offroad scene on the head place and the steeped in tradition mark back on the road the success bring. Already the first prototype from the year 1988 provided by its compromiseless Design for sensation. Radical weight reduction, a completely unorthodox frame construction with numerous pfiffigen detailed solutions and an extremely compact engine made possible an up to then unknown new four-cycle Enduro Feeling with specially-easy handling. Husaberg writes twenty years after again history. With the newest generation Husaberg took up the topic Enduro a further mark with a completely new beginning and flattens an already nearly revolutionary engine concept with a 70° cylinder angles and electronic fuel injection developed. Together with an ultramodern chassis Design developed a Enduro Bike, which sets new bench mark regarding innovative technology and Offroad handling. Ultramodern 70° High performance OHC 4-Takt-Motor State OF the kind engine management with electronic injection Ultrastabiles chassis with chrome molybdenum frameworks and plastic framework tail super+sporty slim Bodywork minimum weight incomparable easy handling ENGINE Heart of the new Husaberg generation is the new SOHC a cylinder engine with a capacity of 448,6 and/or. 565 ccm. Apart from top performance, modern compact Design and high stability was the goal of the developers of positioning the crankshaft near the total emphasis and of favouring thus the handling by the engine Design. 70° CYLINDER ANGLE A flat cylinder angle of 70° makes the misalignment for the crankshaft possible around more than 100 mm upward and approx.. 160 mm to the rear, whereby the rotary masses of the crankshaft close move to the vehicle emphasis. In this situation the gyroscope forces resulting from the rotary crankshaft have the smallest lever force on the total vehicle, from which a handling incomparably easy for four-cycle A cylinders results. Positive side effects of the pulled up engine are reduced building width and clearly improved clearance - a tremendous advantage in close rocky terrain. Cylinder head A obenliegende cam shaft operated over weight-optimized rocker arm the four valves (intake valves from titanium) and serves also additionally as centrifuge for the engine exhaust. In relation to the predecessor model minimized reciprocating masses, larger valve cross sections and a flatter valve angle lead too clearly increased performance with movability in the lower lastbereich, improved at the same time. A diagonally put on magnesium cylinder head cover facilitates substantially the service work. Engine management State OF the kind an engine management of Keihin provides for an unknown gentle Ansprech and handling with performance increased at the same time. The cylinder is artificially respirated by the air box positioned in the tank over a 42 mm butterfly valve body in direct downdraft, which means optimal current and thus maximum achievement. Automatic Choke, temperature and elevator compensation are likewise state of the art. Oil circulation A pressure pump supplies reliably all substantial components such as crankshaft, piston and valve impulse with lubricating oil, while a suction pump leads surplus oil from the cylinder head back to the transmission. Only more an oil filter facilitates the service. E-starter For what Kickstarter, even if the Bike can be started reliably by push of a button? With the precisely working ultramodern engine management the engine can be started in each situation at first attempt. Therefore could without a Kickstarter be done to hold the the weight on a minimum level. Clutch The clutch with integrated jerk absorber and increased oil supply was laid out also for extreme loads. Owing to the new hydraulic clutch manipulation of Magura the dosing behavior of the system is reference class. CHASSIS The new engine concept opens also new ways in things chassis. Husaberg engineers on a weight distribution, the use of high-quality components, favouring the handling, minimum weight and a super+sporty Bodywork with Enduro fair ergonomics put highest priority. Framework A new chrome molybdenum framework in Perimeter Design provides for highest twisting rigidity and safe trace stability with minimum weight. The tubing loops running under the engine could be implemented by the put up engine Design extremely slim and pulled further to the rear. That brings minimum building width and more clearance, an enormous advantage in heavy area. Framework tail Why does it have to be always metal, even if high-strength plastics are sufficient? After this slogan the Husaberg developers implemented the framework tail from interlaced polyethylene. Apart from reduced weight and increased rigidity this material offers a free form choice. Thus numerous electrical components can be embedded well in the tail, a lateral opening under the seat serve as grasp for being busy in hard-to-travel area. Rocker Those the bending moment adapted casting rocker takes up the directly linked Party of Democratic Socialism shock strut and was in such a way designed that both arms exhibit the same Flexverhalten. That brings highest trace trace and much traction and comfort. Upside down fork The fully adjustable 48 mm of Upside down fork of WP suspension provides for sensitive responsing mode and high absorption reserves. With the broad range of adjustment the fork can be adapted in the best way to distance and driver. The CNC milled fork bridges guarantee highest precision and stability. Party of Democratic Socialism Shock the fully adjustable WP Party of Democratic Socialism shock strut with light aluminum external pipe ordered apart from an adjustable traction phase over an adjustable High and Low speed Druckstufendaempfung and lets itself be adapted thus perfectly to most different conditions. Brakes High-quality components also with the brakes. A again developed vorderradbremse of Brembo with a new, weight-reduced swimming brake caliper and a smaller piston provides for maximum and at the same time brake performance well to be dosed with minimum energy expenditure. In the back an a piston brake caliper takes the ultralight brake disk with Wave Design into the pliers. Exhaust The exhaust manifold could be integrated in such a way into the vehicle that it is optimally protected from damage by rock and also the driver not so that into contact come can. The graceful designed final muffler from light aluminum fulfills reliably demanded noise limit. Tank Far to under the seat pulled 8,5-Liter-Tank from transparent polyethylene contributes to as low an vehicle emphasis as possible. Within the lower range the compact fuel pump place finds, while directly behind the gas cap the air box is accommodated - an optimal position for cool and clean intake air as well as for maximum Watt depth. The slim tank Design provides for optimal freedom of movement and sporty ergonomics. Supersportliches slim Body Work
Minimum Weight
Unvergleichbar easy handling
MOTOR

Heart of the new Husaberg generation is the new SOHC single - with a capacity of 448.6 and 565 cc. Besides top performance, modern compact design and high stability was the goal of the developers, the crank shaft near the center of gravity positioning and hence the handling of the engine design to favor.

70 ° ZYLINDERWINKEL

A shallow cylinder angle of 70 ° allows the shifting of the crankshaft for more than 100 mm to the top and about 160 mm to the rear, creating the rotating masses of the crankshaft close to the vehicle-Focus hike.

In this situation, by the rotating crankshaft resulting centrifugal forces the least leverage on the overall vehicle, which for Viertakt-Einzylinder incomparably easy handling results.

Positive effects of the high engine are a reduced width and significantly improved ground clearance-a tremendous advantage in close rocky terrain.

Cylinder head

An overhead camshaft actuated weight-rocker on the four valves (inlet valves made of titanium), and also serves as an additional centrifuge for engine exhaust. Compared with the previous model minimized oscillating masses, larger cross sections valve and a flatter angle valve leading to significantly increased performance while improving driveability in the lower load range. A slanting aufgesetzter magnesium cylinder head cover much easier to service work.

Engine management
A state motor management of Keihin provides for a hitherto unknown Response and gentle behavior while driving increased performance. The cylinder is used by the airbox tank positioned on a 42 mm throttle body in direct current case respiration, which is optimal flow and maximum performance.

Automatic choke, temperature and altitude compensation are also state of the art.

Oil circuit

A pressure pump provides reliable all the essential components such as the crankshaft, piston and valve train with lubricating oil, while a suction pump excess oil from the cylinder head back to the gear heads. Only one more oil filter facilitates the service.

E-Starter
What Kick starter when the bike also reliably push of a button can start? By working ultra-precise engine management can be the driving force in any situation immediately. Therefore, it has been a kick starter be abandoned, so as to the weight to a minimal level.

Coupling
The coupling with an integrated damper jerk and increased oil was also designed for extreme loads. Thanks to the new hydraulic clutch actuation of Magura is the Dosierverhalten the system reference class.

CHASSIS
The new engine concept also opens new avenues in terms of the chassis. Highest priority, the Husaberg engineers on the handling favorable weight distribution, the use of high quality components, minimum weight and a supersportliches Body Work with Enduro-gerechter ergonomics.

Framework
A new chrome-molybdenum-perimeter frame in design that maximizes the torsion track and secure stability for minimum weight. The engine running under the pipe loops were erected by the engine design is extremely slim and continue to be pulled back. This brings minimum width and more ground clearance, a huge advantage in heavy terrain.

Under stern
Why must it always metal, though plastics high enough? Under this slogan, the Husaberg developers under the stern of networked polyethylene. In addition to reduced weight and increased stiffness of this material offers a free choice of form. So are many good electrical components in the rear embed a lateral opening under the seat serves as a handle to handle in rough terrain.

Arm
The adjusted to the bending moment, the casting arm directly actuated PDS-Federbein and was designed so that both arms flex the same behavior. The highest track brings stability and a lot of traction and comfort.

Upside-Down-Gabel
The fully adjustable 48 mm Upside-Down-Gabel from WP Suspension ensures sensitive response and high attenuation reserves. With the wide adjustment range is the best forklift driver to track and adjust.

The CNC-gefrästen fork bridges guarantee high precision and stability.

PDS Shock
The fully adjustable WP PDS-Federbein with light aluminum outer tube features a user-adjustable rebound on a high and Low-Speed-Druckstufendämpfung and is thus perfectly adapted to different conditions.

Brakes
High-quality components with the brakes. A newly developed by Brembo front brake with a new weight and smaller floating caliper piston provides maximum and well dosierbare braking power with minimal effort. Rear takes a Einkolben-Bremssattel the ultra-light with a wave brake disc design in the pliers.

Exhaust
The exhaust manifold was so integrated into the vehicle, that he was against damage by rocks optimally protected, and the driver not to come into contact. The aesthetic of lightweight aluminum muffler certainly fulfilled the required noise limits.

Tank
A far up under the seat drawn 8,5-Liter-Tank transparent polyethylene contributes to the lowest possible vehicle priority. In the lower range, the compact fuel pump court, while directly behind the tank lid accommodate the airbox is in the best position for intake air cool and clean for maximum watts, and depth. The slim tank design provides optimal freedom of movement and sporting ergonomics.

Body Work
New plastic parts and modern Inmold-Technologie for the spoiler emphasize the forward-looking appearance of the whole vehicle. [/ Quote]

I thought about bablefish at first but I know it seldom comes out right so I tried doing it myself. But for a quick look it is adequate. I'll settle for your translations...

Thanks :D

After some 1/3 of the time I spent finnishing about 1/3 of the text I changed my mind and decided babelfish wasn't so bad after all, haha.
But I'm a stubborn ******* so..... But after the 1/3 I did it was time for lunch and the pancakes in the fridge drew me away

EDIT: I first wrote b-s-a-d but that ended up as "toughie". Haven't noticed something like that before...

I really hope the PDS implementation is not the same as KTM's !

I'm really impressed with how everything that doesn't connect the front and back of the bike is plastic. That's awesome, and I'm psyched that this industry is moving in that direction!

The engine design doesn't seem to be too revolutionary (as much as it is clever (re)packaging) besides turning the existing engine around 180 degrees, then rotating it 90 degrees forward. EXTREMELY CLEVER, but it seems all the bits are still in the same relative location as they used to be. It also lets them match the output shaft to the KTM rear swingarm (aka going to the "normal" left hand side), also quite clever and convenient. I hope this cost savings will trickle down to the consumer.

It'd be nice for the factory to release some pics without the skins... Maybe we'll get those today...

How is it a rebadged KTM?

Now that KTM is in control of Husaberg, there are many similarities. Just looking at the plastic cam cover is a dead giveaway. This is not a Husaberg engine like it would have been prior to KTM's ownership. That is good and that is bad. For me, owning a Husaberg is now like owning a Beta.

The heart and sould of any dirt bike is the engine. I like owning bikes that aren't seen on the trail at every corner. That is one of the things that drew me to Husaberg early on. I know they are still awesome bikes, and better in many ways, but the uniqueness factor has worn somewat; at least in my eyes.

You do know that KTM bought Husaberg waaaay back in 1996!?
It is actually the other way around... All KTMs (prior to the DOHC and LC4 excluded) are in fact Husa rip off's.
The fact that KTM is sold in almost infinite larger numbers are we choosing not to see

So we know the change is not without good reason, or is it just an expensive form of bold new graphics.

Because that's the philosophy of the brand. Technological innovations. Boldness before reliability. Opposite of the Japanese philosophy. No doubt they will give us good reasons why all these changes were applied and I bet that one or two of these features will eventually appear on Japanese bikes eventually.

FYI, the cover is magnesium not plastic

It seems as Husaberg didn't lose it's identity within the corporate world of KTM. Perimiter frame fills the void left by the passing of VOR, so maybe those die hards will take notice. Hope the plastic subframe works out in the long run. Husaberg is definitely the test bed for this new feature. Also hope the fuel injection isn't full of mapping gremlins. But more importantly, the motor.... I am sure pleased to see a unique layout with the stacked crank and tranny. Definitely keeps the crank inertia on the roll axis. Rotating the cylinder gets the weight lowered back down and adds more uniqueness. Of most importance though, is the use of existing KTM engine parts. 95X64 SOHC top end looks to be a transplant from the 08 450EXC. Should have the shims on the valves rather than the screw and locknut. 100X72 is the big bore dimensions that take the 525 to a 570. Has been around aftermarket for some time for the KTM guys and lets Husaberg keep a leg up on KTM in off the showroom performance. Bulge beside crank indicates a KTM style counterbalancer. Hurray!!! Has single oil filter lube system as before. Bet clutch and tranny are similar to before as well. I can't see that simply repackaging things in a different orientation is going to cause too many mechanical problems with all the existing KTM parts in use. To keep Husaberg around they needed to differentiate the mark, yet use as many KTM parts as possible for reliability and production concerns. Doubters didn't think it would happen and Husaberg would soon be a ghost. Glad to see things didn't go down that way. KTM\Husaberg deserves a pat on the back.
