:?: I've been running into a lot or trouble starting my '98 FE 400 when it's cold. Comp release and valves are properly adjusted; got good gas, and a nice hot spark. Leg's getting sore; running our of patience and energy in equal measures...

I went looking for threads on this from the "old" stuff, and cant find what I'm looking for. Someone please point me in the right direction...

:( Color me sore...

notrt,

go to the downloads section hit the link for popular downloads and there you'll find the hard start guide. Well worth a read it'll give you an idea where to start so to speak  .

We pull start mine if I can not get it to fire after a 1/2 dozen kicks. No sense being worn out by trying to start the bike. It starts immediately every time we pull it in 3rd gear.

hard start

hi man,
i had the same problem (as all bergers i think!) and short it out by gathering info from this really great site.
does yours has the 38 phm or the vhsb?

with choke on give it about 5 kicks, then unscrew plug and if it is too wet then your ratio is very rich to start. if it is dry then it is too lean.

post your jettings and your starting procedure.

check your needle for wear(the cylindrical part).take a look at my gallery and if yours looks the same here is your problem!

did you adjust your decomp with the kickstarter on the right position?(one position ccw from vertical so that you have to pull it back to return it to its "standby" position on to the case-note that when adjusting the decomp starter must be lying on the case)

my pal has a fe 501 01' and he had some trouble starting from cold and turned out to be due to low compresion(worned rings)

just some thoughts....

hard start

try this one, it really saved some bergers i know when racing with a husaberg

with choke on give it 3 steady not very fast kicks and then with choke off try to start it, this always works for me

Apply choke turn on key push button starts in about 2 or 3 seconds
hope this helps .

cheers doug

cold/hard start threads...beaucoup thanks to all...

8) Thanks to all. 8)

I'll let you know of my progress.

Bike has fresh top end (poston, rings, valve seats, etc...), new roller rockers, rejetted Dell'orto carb, valves and decomp lever spot on...just a reluctant starter for sure.

later...
