I'm dialing in my demo 550 motard, and I need some advise...

I've got the back-side (sag) set and I am happy with the feel of the rear half of the bike. The push is constant and rear swim is predictable and positive. I can push and pull on the back end with confidence... the front is another matter.

That place between contact and full pressure on the front wheel feels mushy. Tire pressure is nominal and the Michelins are in excellent shape, so there is nothing about the mechanics of the tires in play.

The issue is more about the flexy nature of either the geometry of the front end or some subtle rebound harmonic. Whatever it is, the front end feels imprecise and over-reactive at speed...

Would a steering damper help, or would dropping the forks and adjustment do?

i would check that the comp and rebound adjusters are wound out correctly .

left leg at 10 and right leg at 10 , not 10 and 7 . [ 10 clicks as example ] .

next i would change the fork oil and review the spring rate and valving .

adjustments

Matched valving, oil level checked, even plumb-lined the front wheel... all amazingly right on for factory set-up. Nope... the front end is just too light at speed to be confident. Believe it or not, I'm actually considering things like the areodynamics of the front fender... ( I am talking about operating at speed:).
