Hi, I'm Squ1rrel. I'm 43 years old, been an addict since I was 8 years old.
I grew up on a farm near Ballito, on the Natal North Coast, South Africa. Spent many a holiday with other farm-kids just riding all day; DT175 / XR200R plus a smattering of 125cc MX bikes were the rage back in the early 80's. We had a blast as kids, spent most of the time trying technical challenges like trying to make it up impossible hills, river crosssings, etc.
The game really stepped up for me when I got my KDX200 in '85. That was a very capable bike and I was young and fit and hauling! Then I had to get serious about life and got a job! Mostly fun and recreational riding on and off since then. So happy to be back on a bike now and sharing the fun with my boys who are both on YZ85's.
The 'Berg is simply the most awesome machine I have ever ridden. It feels like it anticipates your moves - you look where you want to go and the bike just responds, instantly. I just love and appreciate the build quality, the finishes and the attention to detail. All bikes should be built like this. I opted for a heavier shock spring to cater for the "fuller figure" that I carry these days, and try as I might, I cannot get the shock or the forks to bottom harshly nor protest at anything the trail throws up at me.
I have had the priviledge over the years to ride with some great friends who all share the same passion for offroading. My riding hero is Alfie Cox, and going on an outride with him is an experience you will never forget. I've also ridden with some of the current South African greats such Darryl Curtis, Riaan Van Niekerk, Jade Gudzeit, Denzil Torlage and his up-and-coming son Mark Torlage.
My favourite riding area is the Lesotho highlands, or anywhere in Natal (South Africa), or the Eastern Cape (Longmore Forests). Highly recommend to everyone to go and check these destinations out. There are plenty of tour operators who will gladly rent you some equipment and take you places that will take your breath away.
Lovely to catch up with all of you enthusiasts from around the world on line here. Will post some pics, old and new!
