leaks?

I'd be tempted to seal the whole tank with a gas tank epoxy coating. My buddy who does the Iron Butt with a fuel cell swears by it. He made his own cell from aluminum sheet. It holds not only fuel but also water, he divided the cell volume with a panel. One side holds fuel and the other holds drinking water. He sealed both chambers with different (suitable) epoxies. It's been working now for over two years.

@sp: i discussed this also with my dealer. he told me about a prosduct they use to seal costom Harley tanks with strange shapes. as soon as i get thename ogf the stuff i'll post it. I want to do the mod also.

Im trying to reach gazza, who seems to have a kit available but he's not returning mails, anyone knows someone else?

sorry, but see the sub tank mods thread, you will find contact details of the guy who is doing them here in Australia or try Bryan on [email protected]

I dont make or sell them, only got Bryan to develop them for our own use/need

but he will sell them to others

thanks for your reply gazza, i must have misunderstood i thought you sold them.

Potentially Deadly Mount location leaks

:? Thought I'd add in my 2 cents. I did the mod on my own. Had no thin tank issues but its back to the drawing board any way. I installed the fittings as per Gaza listings. Thanks! Used a 5/16 Motion Pro no flow disconnect between the tanks. Very tight but worked great. I was really excited as I filled up the tank and could see the sub frame filling as well. Then....drip drip drip. Damn! The through-tank mounting points on the sub-frame left side are leaking! There are two mounting points on the left and one on the right. This leak is potentially very dangerous if it develops on the right side (just above the exhaust pipe). Not quite ready for self immolation I'm thinking I can get some aviation tank sealant and isolate those mounting fittings by filling the ears where they reside with some magic goo. This would only minimally decrease the capacity of the tank and would be priceless in peace of mind. Has anyone else run into this problem? If so, what did you do? I'll post again with solution when it happens.

Luv my 2009 Fe450 purchased from Tasky's Metric in WA.

RE: Potentially Deadly Mount location leaks

My understanding is that a number of people have had problems with leaks.

This is one reason why I am waiting for the Auqualine saddle tanks and possibly the larger main tanks. The other is that I think I will use the subframe for a water tank instead of fuel. If I am in the backcountry I think this would be a good backup supply of water. Also, if it leaks all I lose is water, not fuel and water dripping on the exhaust does no pose a threat - although over the decades I have seen a number fuel leaks drip directly on exhausts (not to mention a LOT of oil leaks on exhausts), and as long as there was no flame/spark nothing caught on fire, but it is still something to avoid as much as possible and not just ignore.

Hi All,

Well I was talking with my dealer who was talking with a Husaberg rep who was talking with some other Husaberg group and then I heard from my cousins 2nd nephew not related who races a Husaberg that apparently it is not recommended to turn the current subframe into a fuel tank. Too many possible leakage points and too thin a material. Additionally, they also heard that someone is working on a 'bladder' system that can be inserted into the subframe and rumors were flying that Husaberg will actually have an after market hard parts fuel tank available to replace the subframe....but hey it's all BS until its in my hot little hands.

Cheers, Digs

I just got an '09 FE450 and am about to begin the conversion of the subframe to fuel tank. I found a vendor's website, justgastanks.com , that appears to have the various components I will need. They have connectors, petcocks, and a product called Kreem which is a coating for fuel tanks that prevents leaks.

If anyone has knowledge of the Kreem product, I would appreciate your opinion about the product. Also, I would welcome anyone to take a look at the website and let me know if they cover all the items necessary to convert the subframe.

Thanks,

Jim

I used Kreem succesfully years ago on my monococque CB500/600 project to seal rivetted alloy plate to a tubular steel frame.

No idea about plastic, how about asking the manufacturer?

Steve

Thanks, I did check the Kreem website. Sadly, the product does not work on plastic. Back to the drawing board...

This has become one of my favorite threads ... keep up the great ideas! - ET

I am looking very forward to someone coming up with a way for the new Bergs to have more fuel capacity. I would really like to be able to go 120miles safely. Can already go 80miles or so safely but, that is not quite enough. We ride in the desert a lot & services are very far away.
I really like the idea of converting the sub frame to an additional tank. :) Hope something works out. Can't wait to see what you guys come up with :)

I was thinking about converting my sub frame into a gas tank. But it looks like we might be getting some aftermarket gas tanks soon. So using a sub frame as a gas tank might not be necessary. Given that I would still like to use my sub frame for something. I don't like the idea of all that wasted space. Has any one given any thought to converting the sub frame into a storage area? I was thinking that it might be a good place for tire irons, tubes, an air pump and stuff like that

my plan is to use it as a water resevoir. i needt t bring 4 liters in my next rally, 2 on my back and 2 somewhere on the bike. i'm trying to figure out now what works better, harden the inside of the subframe to mae it waterfroof, or insert some kind of waterbag or other resevoir through a drilled hole. not sure yet. the second option seems to be the cheaper and easier way..

I have looked into converting my sub frame into a fuel tank. I have found a product that may help to line the sub frame

http://www.bluelightningproducts.com/pr ... LINER.html

I emailed manufacturer and he said ok for plastics, is runny enough to swirl around, can ship to Australia.

Yet to try it however.

Any guinea pigs t there?

"BLUE LIGHTNING - FUEL TANK LINER-PT. Seals all types of tanks Metal, Fiberglass, & Plastic Not affected by fuel additives. Flexible Doesn't dry rock hard like others. Seals Pin holes & seem leaks. 1pt. will do approx. 15 gallons Use Blue Lightning Rust Remover to clean tank of any rust or films in the tank. "

Nice find! Now who's going to play "Mr. Science" and see if the 'Blue Lightning Rust Remover' ... removes the plastic sub tank. 8O <lol>

cheers! E-Ticket
