'09 Subframe fuel tank ??

okle said:
my plan is to use it as a water resevoir. i needt t bring 4 liters in my next rally, 2 on my back and 2 somewhere on the bike. i'm trying to figure out now what works better, harden the inside of the subframe to mae it waterfroof, or insert some kind of waterbag or other resevoir through a drilled hole. not sure yet. the second option seems to be the cheaper and easier way..
I don't ride competitions or rallies, but that is my plan too - I've heard that it holds over 4 liters, and that would be about right as a backup water supply in the backcountry.

Rip'n'Shred":4pzzhyh4]I have looked into converting my sub frame into a fuel tank. I have found a product that may help to line the sub frame [url="http://www.bluelightningproducts.com/product/FTLPT/FUEL_TANK_LINER.html said:

I emailed manufacturer and he said ok for plastics, is runny enough to swirl around, can ship to Australia.

Yet to try it however.

Any guinea pigs t there?

"BLUE LIGHTNING - FUEL TANK LINER-PT. Seals all types of tanks Metal, Fiberglass, & Plastic Not affected by fuel additives. Flexible Doesn't dry rock hard like others. Seals Pin holes & seem leaks. 1pt. will do approx. 15 gallons Use Blue Lightning Rust Remover to clean tank of any rust or films in the tank. "

Nice find! Now who's going to play "Mr. Science" and see if the 'Blue Lightning Rust Remover' ... removes the plastic sub tank. 8O <lol>

cheers! E-Ticket[/quote:4pzzhyh4]

I just received a pint of the stuff, and am going to use it in the next two weeks or so to see if it seals the subframe. I too called the manufacturer who said it will work for plastic applications. I guess I am going to be the test mule on this. I'll keep you posted.

Unless someone comes out with a new subframe tank or a clean tank, I will also try this.

If it works for you I will give it a go too! That's brave of me isn't it!

Someone's gotta go first.

I am on board too if it works :D If it holds fuel maybe it could be possible to just use it as a reservoir for the fuel & siphon it to the real fuel tank. In case it is impossible or too difficult to turn it into a real fuel tank. Would beat carrying it in bottles. I would prefer not to have to carry liters of fuel in my back pack or fanny pack. Then all I would have to carry in my pack would be a little tube in a zip lock baggie. I do not know much but it may be something you technical minded guys can play around with. :?: :)

What's the verdict on Blue Lightning? Has anyone done it yet?

I have it, but haven't had time to start this project. Probably will during the Thanksgiving break.

Looking forward to reading about your results :)

why cant people get off the butt and do it themselves ??

it's not hard and it works, there are a number of threads on how to do it

I tried to get the guy who helped with mine to sell kits but he is not interested, no $ margin in it

those that help themselves reap the rewards..........................those that dont...............well, run out of fuel at 60 - 70 miles :D :D

Gazza- I called last night to Seadoo and they informed me essentially the same thing. How about some photos of your setup so we can reproduce it? I have a machine shop and plenty of smart fabricators available to help out here but rather than reproduce the wheel, I'd like to see a nicely done one that works as a starting point.

I am little shaky on how the fuel is being transferred from the main tank and that connection? In addition are you only running a single top vent up to the stock?

Be gald to help but my Dakar bike is now enroute to Argentina.

Have a look at this thread, near the start of it are photo's from one of the first Aussie guys to do the conversion.

We followed his lead and are now on Mk III setup that we used on the Dakar bike, its the best with its own tap at the bottom of the subframe tank to control usage. I will be using the subframe tank as my reserve tank leaving it full and off unless needed.

we only use the one breather at the top and loop a hose back along under the tank to T into the main front fuel cap breather hose, but lots of options with this, just do what suits you

we actually use the breather that is closest to the ECU the one marked not needed and dont use the other one, this then gives a flatter route exiting rearwards for the breather hose.

it is very tight under the bottom to link the 2 tanks together but can be done with a coil of hose to allow enough hose to have movement in the front tank and get accesss with your hand.

CRITICAL ISSUE

make sure you flush the subframe a few times with fuel after putting the fittings in before putting back on the bike, it will have bits of plastic and a powdery coating that needs cleaning out. On some of the early ones we did we had the injector getting blocked, the OEM in-line filter in the tank is not good enough by itself, so we use a CanAm quad bike external fuel filter and more importantly one of these

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/HUSABERG ... ccessories

and since then have never had any fuel contamination or blockage issues

the fuel pick up and transfer is similar to the photos on the thread

in January will take some photos of the Dakar setup, its really good now !

it is a little slow to fill the subframe tank but not that bad, on one bike we put another filler cap on the top left just behind the seat but it only saved say 30secs a fill

Gazza-Thanks for the reply.

Question- I assume you just run a T off the pressurized fuel line to the injectors which pulls fule from the subframe tank?
Are you still just threading the pipe fittings into the plastic or did you progress beyond that? I am concerned about vibration and sealing long term with what I see in those photos.

I promise I will stop pestering you at some point. When I am not so sure about!! LOL!

no, the fuel goes into the main tank by gravity then the fuel pump sucks it like normal

there is a better thread process into the tank using a thicker plate, will try and get a photo next week form one of the Safari bikes.

In a couple of weeks, If you can help with some better pics, (can you take some of the safari bikes?) I will give it a try. I will also use the sealant previously posted in this thread. Thanks for all the info Gazza.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am happy to announce that some partners and I are currently in the process of pre production testing of a complete subframe fuel tank that will hold apporximately 1 gallon of fuel.

This tank will be a complete unit, that is made to be a gas tank and will be a direct bolt on unit to replace your stock sub frame. All hardware will be included to connect your new subframe tank to the stock main tank. The tank will retail for between $350-400.

I am hopeful that within a couple of weeks, the final details will be ironed out and we will be able to start taking pre orders.
