I am sure there are products that would coat the inside of the subframe to make it compatible with fuel and fuel tight.

Some inventive mind out there in the Husaberg world might come up with a bladder system that would work with fuel and you could stuff inside the subframe!!

I've been on pins and needles wanting to buy a new Husaberg, I've had four in the past, just need to commit and sell all my yamahas!

I have checked out the subframe potential.

No leaks from the fasteners, this is looking good. 4 litre capacity, 50% increase on standard, not bad.

Fuel is mainly to the left side, but given that it is carried low, should not be a problem with bike balance.

Wall thickness is approximately 3mm. This should be more than enough material for the vent fitting (plus sealing goo). Fitting the balance line, I would do similar to the fuel pump with a mounting plate/gasket goo and bolts.

12.5L all up, that will be good enough for Condo and Yilgarn etc

Great stuff to be able to do that and use the stock body work.

I reckon someone had this at the back of their minds with the design...................why else ?? and given its the same material as the tank !! :cheers: :wav:
 
This sounds like great discovery and means this could be the perfect short rallye bike. Initially I thought this bike was too expensive and somthing that would be hard to get a new tank for, but might be tempted to start saving now.

I fully agree - it's not fair to ask you to drill a hole in your brand new bike... bring it by and I'll drill it for you... :D

When you are done, can you give me a ride report. I've read so many great reports about the bike, one more won't matter.

I've had it for a week now, and the time that I planned to get a ride in, it snowed and rained, absolutely miserable. Yes, I'm a fair weather rider.
 
I would be nice to have about 13 or 14 liters. That would give about 90 miles (140 km) and here in the western US is about right. With limited range (under 60 miles) I can't use the bike in this configuration. I'll stick with my 05 650.
 
with the sub-frame tank as well it will have about 12.5 L which due to the EFI will give the bike a range of about 200km
 
On Daniel Persson homepage (Swedish factory enduro rider) He is mention that on one race. Ränneslättsloppet (longer race) he was in the lead when he had to go in the pitt to refuel. Most off his contender didnt (he was missing 1 liter fuel) and went 6place in finish.
He is mention that Husaberg is developing a bigger tank!? that maybe is comming in a soon future.

What that is telling I dont know. and if they also is looking if the subframe can be used or if they trying to do a bigger main tank??

Anyone got any further with this fuel tank inthe subframe of the 09 models yet?
 
Have been investigating quick disconnect fuel fittings that seal when apart before I continue further.

The fittings I have sourced are the boat outboard fuel fittings, Honda CPB fittings. Cost for these is about AU$25 for the 1 set. These are metal, unlike the Berg fuel fitting that are plastic. The male has 1/4 BSP thread so this will thread into the mounting plates on the sub and main tank and the female fittings will connect the two. By using this method, you can use the main tank only for those shorter rides or connect the sub and main and have 12.5lt for the longer ones.

I could develop this quicker if, I didn't have to finish building my shed and outdoor kitchen with pizza oven.

Greetings All!

I made the mod, and here are some pictures and description of what I did. I hope they will be of help to someone.

I made the initial holes, but the sub-tank 90 degree elbow was not where I expected to be, and I did not liked the rear shock spring clearance.

So, I decided to plug the hole and make a new one, but this time on top. I drilled with much smaller drill and used a hot air gun to enlarge it, so that it's more like vortex shape. That way the thread will be stronger, and there is a nice place for o-ring.

I added fuel resistant hose to the 90 degree elbow so that it goes to the lowest part of the sub-tank.

On the fuel tank I put fuel ****, so that I can enable or disable the sub-frame tank. Note that the orientation on the picture is not final.

Finally everything is in place. You can see how the fuel **** is accessible from behind the shock absorber.

I routed the breather to the fuel tank breather:

After I filled with fuel there was a leak somewhere between the tanks. I removed the sub-tank with the fuel in it and find out that there is a week place in it!

The material was very thin, like a garbage bag. On the other side it was also thin, but acceptable.

As there is no place to make big hole and plug it, I had to drill the sub-tank all the way to the other side, where the under-seat grip is located and make "2-way plug".

The o-rings are not yet mounted to the plugs.

I tested the setup last weekend and it was holding nice. I noticed that there are some fuel in the back, that is not used, unless you tap the front tank breather, so that all the air comes from back to front, that way all the fuel in the back tank will be used, before it starts to use fuel from the front tank.

I was wondering too okle, I just re read his post and it was clear. He used the plug to fix the weak spots where it was leaking fuel.
