Useful list of essentials, except, ditch the neoprene seal savers, they will trap dust and grind away at the tubes. In my experience, around here, they cause more grief than they solve. This includes running my suspension workshops with Frank Pons of Biketek on average 4-5 times a year for the last 8 years.

Is there an entrance exam and are dumb folk from the city riding over powered Huserbergs allowed to attend? When is the next workshop?

warning: This is a blonde babe by the side of the road requiring help, type question:

I have a rear disk guard waiting to be put on that replaces the calliper carrier too - there are wierd rubber grommet thingies on the existing carrier to take off - how do these come off?

Thanks in advance
Fizz

Once I get the rear wheel off, whats next? Here is a picture of the two black lugs - does the big one circled on the left just pull out to reveal a bolt? There is no head on the one circled on the right?

Thanx in advance.

Anyone able to help - been a couple of days and no replies - I'm almost going to post on advrider.com - but that feels like being a traitor :oops:

Thanx

The caliper should slide off the pins and the grommets will stay with the caliper, you will need a oring pick or similar to pick the ends of the grommets off the locating grooves on the carrier pins.

Well, I decided to buy the Wolfman E10 saddlebags, as they were much cheaper than the competitor. I have had their enduro tank bag I used on my Husky for some time, and is great, so I know the material build quality is high.

These bad boys are the business. It fits perfectly on the bike. The bags are supported at the rear by two metal hooks that fits the fender perfectly - no drilling on this version.

There is an extra bag you can buy to put between the saddlebags on the seat, but for day use this extra item is overkill.

I wanted bags so I dont have to wear a backpack - I visit the chiropractor often enough.

To give you an idea of internal size of each side, I can put 4 * 1 litre MSR fuel bottles on 1 side alone (not that I will).

In the pictures I put a medium size bath towel in each side rolled up to fill the bags half way to get some bulk.

Tire pressures in the dirt

I will be breaking-in the bike on forest twin and single track for hrs 3-15 on a 2 day overnighter.

What PSI can I safely use front and rear with stock tires/tubes without getting pinch flats? The manual says 15 psi on both, but do people go lower?

Thanx in advance
Fizz

I like to run 11psi up front 12 or 13 in the rear, but I run extra heavy duty tubes.

I have been busy with working weekends, weekend holidays away, etc and have only just done 3 hrs on my new bike :(

I did the 3 hr oil change today - next weekend it gets 2 days (15 hrs) of overnight camping single track - wooohooo = > baptism of fire and catch-up mode for riding my new bike. I'm not checking valves at all until after this ride as valve tolerances seem wide anyway.

On the 3 hr Motul oil change:
- oil was VERY dirty
- lower oil screen semi dirty (say 1/10 of 1 hr oil change - I have photos if any interest)
- I removed the upper oil screen on the bajo bolt for the first time - totally clean.

I run 13\52 sprockets and it doesn't seem low enough - is it just me? Anyone run a 13\54 or 12\52?

Regards
Fizz

Hey Fizz,
I thought 52 rear was the biggest sproket you could run. Where are you getting this 54 info?

Radiator 'cooking' at 4hrs ...

I have just come back from 4 hrs technical single track ride - bike had only 3 hrs prior on it. One hour in to the ride, the radiator started steaming - had to let it cool, then happened again a while later, then ok from then on.

Weather was cool - its winter here 11 degrees celcius at most. I orderrred the fan but thought I wouldnt need it 'til summer!

It was grade3 single track, slow\tough going, and I was riding the clutch ALOT.

Is this normal?

Thanx in advance

They can run hot. One check fluid level one mate had less than 500 mls in radiators. Two I run the waterless coolant which works very well. Three if problems continue consider a fan. However I run a small overflow tank ( from a Gas Gas 450 trail bike ) and waterless fluid with no problem and its a lot cheaper that the fan. I guess you shouldn`t forget its still tight.

As for gearing 13/52 is great on the 390 and if you let the Berg have its way and use the grunt its fine. It wan`t stall trust it to pull. Sorry forgot this bit I might post more about mine later. I`m very very happy eg rode 3 hour pony express last week and in the greasy conditions 390 Berg pulls around the corner and then into straight with motocrossers desperately trying to find grip to get past.

I run 12/52 - it is okay. I like to go real slow. It helps me. Some people like to go faster. YMMV

52 is about as large as you can go with the stock chain guard.

FE390 vs TE610

Thanks for the replies re gearing and radiator:
I checked the fluid level before I left and was ok, so assume it must be a break-in thing.
Re gearing, I only do slow and tight, so will go to 1 tooth less on the front asap.

Some observations I made re riding my FE390 vs Husky TE610 today: (I am a grade 2/3 rider so take this with a grain of salt):

- FE feels like a nimble gazelle; TE a lounge chair with wheels;
- the FE is very light at the back, and body position is critical when going up sloppy hills - today I dug in some big holes with the real wheel and I am going nowhere going over slop and a log, The TE is much heavier and rear wheel 'more planted' and therefore more forgiving;
- FE turning radius far superior and turning light as a feather;
- I rode my TE and the clutch gear changes felt like a bag of crap compared to the FE clutch;
- TE throttle response is slow (I used to think it was good before I got the FE);
- I thought the TE was a smooth motor until I rode the FE seriously today.
- I am 6 foot and I need bar risers for sure on the FE (as I do on the TE)- I know some people don't, but standing wasnt right today without them. How high can I go in mm without extending cables?

Best Regards
Fizz

I`m 6.1 and I use KTM bar rubber mounts - they allow bar to move up/down/ back/ forward some and they raise the bar to about right. Also stock bars are very low so I go to Honda Hi shape which is much higher. With these two I also had 10 mm spacer to jack up height but it was too much to get right over front. So try bars and spacer, or bars and raiser, or stock bars and big spacer.
