just a bit general chit chat, but is everyone around the world experiencing a bit of unusual weather this year? or is it just my imagination?
we have just had the most rainfall in december in "recorded" history since 1870.
the total so far is over 500mm or 20 inches.
i was talking to an old timer the other day & he said its all b.s.
"it comes in cycles" he says.back in the 50's & 70's was the same he recons.
dunno :? i've never seen such a wet winter to spring & now start of summer.it has been very persistant.
in the sub-tropics,we usually get a wet season from january into april, then it drys out for winter & spring.maybe an occasional storm, thats it.
every spring we drain our 10000 gallon tank dry, this year i could have filled 10 of them. 8O
they said with global warming would make our area get drier.well they got that all ballsed up,soon as that come out the experts mouth, we experienced the opposite.
don't get me wrong,we have had fantastic riding weather up until december & now its just gone way over the top.
can't ride, cause you just can't.
can't go crabbing cause they've been flushed out to sea,
can't fish cause the waters black with tea tree.
been just kick'en back watching the kids play in the warm rain & getting a glow up drinking too much home made rum.
any other stories?
heres a couple of pics & short vids of our neck of the scrub.

More rain and snow here than usual. Forecast for last night was up to 3" per hour!
That would have flooded my place...

Fortunately the storm didn't have the same intentions and passed over quicker than expected (whew!). 8)

Southern Ca got almost 25" (breaking records) in a week in the mountains and up to 10" down low with some flooding.

Gonna be a great year for snow sports (if they can get there). :p

Very little snow in southern Iceland and up to + two digit °c numbers in December and then the other day down to about -15°c.

Whats up with that? :?

I'm in Portland, Oregon, USA ..... and it has rained almost the entire fall /winter.
A break here and there. But other than that - we have been having serious cabin-fever rain!

arghhh....

We had three dry days in June this year. Locals started calling it "Junerary." And our November/December were the wettest on record since the big flood back in '96.

Not a lot of worrying going on about UV exposure/damage up here lately. :^(

The weatherman on our local news channel (look north) runs a blog, a summary of the weather for each month, this is what he had to say about several month in 2010

temperature recorded at Leeming since records began in 1947

Sunday across much of the UK was one of the hottest on record. At Leeming in North Yorkshire, the maximum
temperature of 27.2C (81F) was second only to the record which was set in May 1947, when the mercury soared to
28.9C (84F).

It may come as a surprise to many of you, shivering through the coldest British winter for decades, but data
released this evening shows that global temperatures, as measured by satellites, rocketed in January to a new
record.

Which just goes to show ... all bets are off ... on the weather from here on out.

A few year ago in Queensland, when I was there for a visit, the dams were almost empty ,running at or below 20% capacity.

I was on the Sunshine Coast in QLD a month ago visiting a mate, he had just completed building a new house and was explaining how the laws had changed recently with building approvals due to the lack of water, he claimed you had to put an extra 10k into a house for the water catchment tanks and accessories in the suburbs due to the lack of water over there.

It sure was strange watching the rain come down non stop, and it still continues over there, just overflowing the tanks and running down creeks and the gutters. They now have floods in various places also.

Definately appears to go in cycles the weather.

Our local ski hill has a mid base of 540 cm. They has 400 cm snow fall in 48 hours.
This is a record but not totally unusual.

Well i am surprised how slow summer has been to arrive in Perth this year. Then we are just about to have 4 x 40 deg c + days in a row starting Sunday. I was going to try and have a night ride in the next few days, but even thats out when its still 30 deg c + in the evenings.

Ah, ya' whiny butt! Put on an extra coat and go riding! :D

We hear you, mate. It's weird weather everywhere.

You mean 4 meters in 48 hours??
Guess you typed a zero too much right?

I am very proud to be an American.

But I sure wish we would pull our head out of our a**** , get with the program, and go to the metric system.
{ ... insert big sigh here ...}

Just got back from camping for a week down northern NSW and had a ball. Couldn't stay in doors any longer.
Was wet from Sunday -Tues, then started to slacken off but didn't stop us. The rain was warm so it made it quite pleasurable. Got flooded in for 2 days so couldn't drive anywhere but the bikes were out cause it didn't affect the trails.
By Thurs the tracks had dried out pretty well and I had changed the map back to aggressive. In the end I'm glad we decided to go as we got lucky, and the wife is 5mths pregnant so this was her last ride till after may (she didn't ride all the time only when it dried out).

Put about 850k's (mostly single track) on the odo, and emptied about 4 cartons of beer (36lts) in the process.
Thats about 23ks to the litre.  .

Yep North Queensland was awash as well, ride miles are down but beer consumption is up, some good riding weather now, with plenty of traction about the place. But only for a couple of days untill the monsoonal deluge returns and I'm sitting in the shed drinking again.

Things have gone from bad to worse in Queensland with the floods. The weather certainly is unusual.
I have skied on the Hawkesbury river in New South Wales all my life and have not seen a flood since 1992. I was convinced with the global warming stories that the Hawkesbury river would never flood again, but am starting to change my mind after seeing the carnage on the news in Queensland.
Hawkesbury Floods have occurred in:
1961
1964
1978
1988
1990
1992
