whats up with this weather people?

The problem with the weather is that we as a society have very short memories and talk of unusual and extreme events when they are outside our generational experience, but these floods are not anywhere near as big as they could be.

In my former career as a Dam Safety professional we had to consider events of the order of 1 in 1,000,000 million years and more, and these are likely about 1 in 100. We have had the same issues with bush fire severities too, collectively we have short memories. How many have objected over the years to local government restricting development on what is considered flood prone land just because they hadn't seen it under water?

Having said that, my heart goes out to those affected, this is no doubt an extreme event that unfortunately will perhaps get worse before it gets better.

Steve

wow seen it on the news too looks really bad hope it gets better for u and cant wait till it does over here sick of lookin at my bike lol

My thoughts and prayers for you folks in Oz. Just saw some terrible footage on the news this morning. Man,,,stay safe guys.

Me and my family have stayed dry, We are one of the lucky ones, i thought we were quite low but no that bad as it turns out.

All the best to those affected

interesting stuff lads.
there is probably no such thing as "normal" weather anyway,it's always a bit up and down with a few spikes here and there.we can only really look at the big picture
there was a fair bit of media" beat up" as per always.like steve said "people have short memories".
in saying that,i feel sorry for the people in the west of rocky area & darling downs/ lockyer valley, that was certainly most unusual.
That huge wave of water coming down off the mountains with no warning. Nothing like that has ever happened like that in recorded history.
Poor buggers could hear it coming, thinking what the hell is that? 8O
They must of thought the end of the world was coming
Yes, We have had a series of unusual weather patterns here of late, but I suppose it will be someones elses turn next somewhere else around the world.
There still should be a certain amount of self blame that people should take, who live in overland flow paths or river flooding areas. They just have to accept and realise from time to time they will get flooded, most do, but some don't
If you live out in the scrubs somewhere surrounded by trees, chances are there is a bushfire risk.
For the most part it has been a media beat up, most of the parts flooded were known flooding areas, there is nothing unusual about that at all and probably overdue to happen again anyway.
That Brisbane river side floating walkway was a joke, getting washed away and broken up in a average size flood.
The engineers who designed that should have put a little more thought into it.
Hopefully a few lessons were learnt by our short term memories
I tell you what though, It pays to be a little self sufficient.
Road and Rail supply lines were cut for 5-6 days between Brisbane and Rocky and in that time the shops were getting bare, no fresh fruit/vegies, bread and milk.
I reckon it would only take about two wks and people would really start to panic.
The system is good when everything is going ***** dory, soon as there is a hick up in the supply lines, it all turns
to crap.
Imagine what would happen if the world wide internet shut dowm overnite. 8O
Well with the wet season just starting, and the s.o.i index still pushing 30, and the ground still saturated , who is for a punt that we will get smacked again before the wet season is finished
Here is a few more pics of our local area flooding, that is ......if you are not already sick to death of all the hype.
Signing off from bergbro's "big dustbowl in the west"......apparently

You're dead right mate ! I moved to Charters Towers in 91 and we had the 2nd highest floods on record, then last year another flood surpassed that level and we were cut off for 4 days. I chose to live away from the river after that.

I think its disgusting how the media sensationalize these sort of things, sure we need to be informed but when they shove a camera in the face of some unfortunate person who has just lost everything and ask them to describe it I can only think " Well it would feel pretty ********* wouldn't it ".

Husapye your OK mate?
I see you on line. I think your from Christchurch aren't you?

I can't believe the carnage I saw in New Zealand. I normally like taking the piss out of KIWI's but felt so sad watching the news. Buildings smoking and they didn't bother looking for people, A kid minding place flattened.
Hope you and your family and friends are OK. Hope all you KIWI Husabergers are OK.
Davo.

research HAARP and you will find out about the weather, earthquakes etc.

Been there, done that. It's a really big radio station, to be sure, but just a little math puts it in perspective.

I don't remember exactly, and don't want to bother looking it all up and taking 10 minutes to work it out again, but if memory serves, what my simple research proved was that if you ran HAARP wide open for an hour, it puts as much energy into the atmosphere as 1 lightning bolt does in about 1 second.

People naturally have a hard time getting the concept of really big numbers, (otherwise our governments could never get away with running up the debt like they do). Those who think mankind can affect the weather have homework to do.

Speaking of big numbers, al ****, as of 2008, had made $100 million off of "global warming". I guess he's not so stupid after all.

Sure it's all about schmucks making money out of it all, next door was 95 year old and cam off the land so they sure take note of the weather and the old brain box was still spot on and said that's just how it goes here, nothing has changed much at all.
I remember in the 70's it pissed down a lot and we had cane toads everywhere, the rain is coming back much like that now but the toads are bugger all.
Back in 1940's my dad said out on the Darling Downs it once rained that hard that he found it hard to breath out in it, but never came across it pissing down like that ever again.

So just how much rain can piss down ? a inch in a hour max, or what, who can truly say.
