Since this site is about dirt bikes and off roading, supporting liberal democrats who typically favor land closures is a betrayal to our sport/hobby.

This is an interesting point to discuss. Just as an exaggerated example, in the hard-right "privatize everything" / "private property rights above all", I see swaths of privately-owned land being closed off to dirt bike riding and no negotiaton angle for us to get in - and conversely, in a strong state-backed public land domain, I see the possibility of shared access to national parks that we can at least discuss getting to ride in.

Edit: Of course "The Market" may give us access to ride, in the thought experiment of "all land is private" - the theory is then that there will be incentive for some landowners to allow riders who pay somehow. So it is then the question: Which do you find more likely, that you have enough money to pay for riding? Or that your vote and influence as a citizen in coalitions of like-minded citizens exercising political influence will open up land for riding?

Edit 2: I know this is a false dichotomy! There's kind of the middle way that land is just public and open and unrestricted. Then that's another thing to consider: Will it stay that way? What forces are there that claim that land? What force is there that keeps the land unclaimed and / or open?

I agree and was hesitant to post my above response. I was just trying to relate political ideologies to the topic of this site. Taffy's original post was pretty light hearted and really doesn't incite any deep political debate, even here in the "lounge" IMO! :eek:ccasion5:

...and yet, it was under a republican admin that started in the seventies and saw the big push in 2008 for the travel management rule that shut down a very large percentage of access in our riding areas in az. hmmm? it be da gov't, not the pol party.

I'm sure you can cherry pick several examples like that, but it doesn't change the fact that like stands on gun control, liberal ideologies are typically behind land closures. What candidates and issues does the Sierra Club and other environmental groups endorse and why? Are they ever against a land closures?

These are sort of rhetorical questions, so I don't really care about a response and I refuse to get into an online pissing contest. For my thoughts on the subject please check out the Blue Ribbon Coalition link in my sig. Or if you're a street biker who doesn't care about it, keep listening the Sierra Club and AMA.

melania is too "vegas" looking for my taste.

eric: next time you guys hit the area, you should stay at our "air bnb" located on buckboard trl in cottonwood. it might even give you access to a bike.
the verde valley indeed has a lot of trails well hidden from the generic tourist. most if not all the stuff around sedona is pretty tame and overused.
you probably drove right past my house at one point and could have run into my son, who works for the city of jerome.

Thanks Ned.
So far Cottonwood is my #1 semi-retirement destination. My wife would go today if I wanted to. We have both grown weary of CA for many reasons and lust for a more relaxed, casual and polite place. What do you think of the riding area listed below?

Hayfield Draw/Bryant Park OHV Area6Hayfield Draw/Bryant Park OHV Area (Cottonwood)
Prescott National Forest, Verde Ranger District
Eight miles west of Camp Verde and south of Highway 260, Hayfield Draw has an 80-acre cross- country area limited to ATVs and trail bikes, access to more than 100 miles of designated trails, and two acres of beginner’s course. Facilities include toilets, ramadas, picnic areas and parking. This area includes High Desert and has spring, fall and winter seasons. Access: take I-17 north to State High 260, then go eight miles northwest of Camp Verde on State Highway 260. Contact Prescott National Forest, Verde Ranger District at (928) 567-4121. More information about Hayfield Draw External Link

I apologize to all for the thread hijack but I could not help myself.

hayfield is the only purpose built ohv facility in the verde valley. there are several around the state. the only thing it provides is ramadas, pit toilets, a small riding area for wee ones where parents can supervise (and let the dust drift over the highway :p) and a kiosk so you can insert your $5 for the privilege. it also acts as a staging area to a series of 50" mostly rock infested trail that loops about 30 miles west of the highway 260. there is also a bunch of "hidden" singletrack tucked in there as well that we are lobbying to get legalized.
our bigger project is located outside of cornville and consists of a 30+ mile loop of singletrack we built about 8 years ago and is in the late stages of becoming legal.
