tight fit mk2 keihin fcr

Hi all, due to some luck on ebay i've secured myself a 2002 wr426 carb with complete throttle assembly [thats how it was listed no mention of keihin fcr], for a mere £45 of our english pounds i got it all delivered to my front door.
All well and good with Taffs brilliant advice in the owners manual but the thing sits to tight to my starter [fe400 03], its not the drain nut on the bottom theres a little breather pipe stub sticking out just behind the nut witch catches on the top of the starter motor. has anyone else ground some off this little bit of mag ally to make room? One more question while im here, the pipe came with no carb venting hoses at all, i know they normally look like medusa's hair on a bad day but are they all the same diameter or do i need to order different size fuel vent pipe?
I haven't yet lopped the 5mm off the inlet stub as this will just make the situation worse taking the stub closer to the crown of the starter motor, anyone with pics of there mods to this carb and getting ti to fit feel free to mail me, thanks in advance. Oh yeah just my 2 pence worth, shouldn't the most commomnly asked questions or handy mods be made sticky in the beginning of the appropriate forums?

hello 234

the MK2 carb is a poorer fit than the MK1 that i have. i did scoots carb and saw that things ran closer. however, shortening the black rubber inlet stub DID help so i can't see it wouldn't help you here?

you need to shunt the carb forward 5mm and that will help. i found that by lifting THEN pinching the hose clips it helped a lot.

great bargain-well we hope so!

breathers
well as long as it breathes somewhere and no muck can get in-you should be fine! i believe you may have a breather in the middle of the casting behind the slide area. your risk with muck here i'm afraid. scoot only rides his on the road....

Spotted a trick mod

Whilst browsing images on the gallery here i noticed a mk2 carb with the said alloy/mag breather that sticks out of the underside removed and in its place a 90deg brass bend[very small dia]. I guess il be doing this to as when i chop my inlet stub the darn thing will sit smack bang on the crown of the starter as at the mo its like 5mm back, thanks for your help Taff, il be visiting the garage across the road for a little help on tracking a small dia 90deg bend with a thread on it to tap into the bottom of float bowl, il post a pick later in week when i get time.

hello,

i fitted the mk2 in my fe400 ´03, and, i must say, its a tight fitting.
i sawed off the little "breather pipe stub". i replaced the rubber "intake manifold" by this one:
HBansaugk.JPG

then you need an other "intake rubber", special part for the mk2.
with these parts the mk2 sits in a good position i think, not to tight to the starter.

found exactly the problem as detailed above.
i've pm'd artus and 234... to see how they got on.
but (highly unlikely) did anyone note the rubber manifolds that artus is on about cos the address of the photo no longer wrks.

for got to ask as well. is there likely to be any adverse effect in shortening the inlet-tract between the carb and the cylinder in order to get it to fit?

no none. tyhere is a general rule about the distance from the inlet valve to the opening of the carb. this being so, a little old man would therefore say: add a bit to the belmouth to keep the distance the samebut you know, WTF!

actually found a mk1 now, seems breakers are awash with them in uk so going to fit that instead.
figured how to make the mk2 fit but it was not going to be as tidy as i wanted. as it would have meant loosing the cover on the throttle linkage.

Here is some pics of my Mk2 from a 04 CRF 450 install. Had to cut off breather nipple on the bottom, shorten the intake boot to 25mm and then machine out the inside on a lathe to fit the 41 mm carb, then modifiy the pipe to clear the fuel inlet.

what's the SP on a keihin mark1 nowadays? they used to be a lot of money? thing is, they still are on e-bay at £100-150 whch, given that you need to spend another £70 is a lot of money!

actually now its arrived it is a mk2, first year that they had a hot start from a yam 400, its different to the other one in that its got a bolt on intake where as the other one i had was fixed and it has a large bore, short stubby fuel intake so its not hitting the pipe, plus its not immaculate so i've ground off the hose mounting stub on the bottom of the float bowl. it now fits as it it was meant to be on the bike.
haven't done the jetting which at present is stnd wr400f jetting as i wanted to fit it first.
good sign though is that using petrol i've had lying around for a month or two the bike started from cold, on the button first time. the engine turned over for a second then fired! nice!
idling a bit fast but think i need to adjust the fuel screw or what ever that awkward little screw in the bottom of the card is called as turning the idle knob only reduced it so far.
going to do that now and take it for a spin to see how its running.
