are you not prepared to consider a compromise for this. several people have asked you about it but with no reply?

i note that the regular "no" equaled the regular "yes" at the beginning of this vote. can you not find a way through this? several ideas have been put forward.

i haven't heard one "yes" say that it'll be good for the site. i've heard psople say that it'll be;

good for me
i like SMs
sales will go up
it'll promote SM

but i haven't heard anybody say that it's good for the site.

and BTW folks if i'm trying to be funny i do use the emoticoms and if i'm not i don't. you haven't misunderstood me many of you-i haven't been trying to be funny since page 1. it's a serious subject and worth our time and best thoughts.

SuperMoto is a fringe branch of our sport that happens to be growing. There are enough unique aspects to this sport to send a Husaberg enthusiast surfing for info on the various SuperMoto forums on the web which is a time consuming effort.

Not only that, but there are not (in my opinion) any good English-language Supermoto forums extant that I am aware of. "17 inches" is great, but I don't read French. The TT forum comes close, but it's mainly populated by newbies and street posers. The international flavo(u)r of our UHE site might be just the thing to build a good knowledge base. Who knows :)

In any case, what's the point in arguing over it ? If Schwim decides to make one, then we'll see if it takes off. And for non-believers, the simplest course of action will be to ignore it. That's bliss, right ?

This post is directed towards everyone, I'm simply quoting his post because I can't remember all of the comments and questions he directed towards me.

I had hoped that my now infamous "pour some pity on me" thread would have explained sufficiently the position I am in and the reasons that I haven't responded in this thread. Obviously, that wasn't the case, so I will dedicate the next hour of my life to answering these questions and responding to the forum alternative proposals before getting to work tonight.

Taffy, you wanted to know why I've not responded to the alternatives to the forum. I will respond to each one now:

1)Supertireguy-Split General forum into on/off road

General isn't just for bikes, but also off topic posts, so where would an offtopic post go, on or off road?

2)SuperMotoTeam-SUPERMOTO in subject line

Sure, but why hasn't anyone done it to date? We don't need a vote for this

3)LeFrog-Forum software needs to filter threads/cats for subject

sure, but totally out of my hands. The software would need to have it implemented, so talking about this is useless.

4)Taffy-Color coding system

Taffy sir, I think this is an awesome idea, and I'm not being a smart ***. The problem is this. I'm not going to go into depth on what this would entail, but I'm going to give you an idea of the risks of this on my end and what would happen.

To do this, I need to alter the forum software to allow you to designate a topic color, then it needs to store that for each thread in the threads table in the database. Then alter the part of the forum that displays it, so you can sort by that method as well.

We're talking(conservatively) about 1,000's of lines of code added and modified. Assuming I was capable mentally of accomplishing this(I'm not), I would have to modify the threads that are currently in the database(almost 30,000) to fit the new format. Now, if I get this wrong, at best I'm looking at days or weeks of fixing it so we can have a forum again. At worst, we've lost 30,000 posts forever, since I can't properly backup due to being on dial-up.

So, in short the two things keeping me from accomplishing this are:

1)I'm not proficient enough to make this modification
2)If I screw up, we're totally screwed

I'm very sorry that you're angry about this, but as I said in my "don't cry for me Argentina" thread, I'm doing it the best way I know how, that being popular vote. I understand your points, and don't think you're being overly passionate, but I have to say that I've given you a lot more slack than I would anyone else in this thread because I like you and also because you're one of the most helpful and innovative people on this site.. You've insulted people, accused people and belittled others, without the use of icons, so I have to assume that you meant it.

I've just finished reading every thread in 6 pages of this post, and have found 4 suggestions, those being above. The rest is utterly useless, calling people panty waists and mocking them because the poster disagrees.

Nothing is forever, and if the SM forum goes and is a flop, we'll move the threads to the next appropriate forum and move on with our lives. I've been in this situation before, meaning having a vocal person on the site, in a position like this, and it often comes to an ultimatum, them or the forum/decision/whatever they're fighting against, and I hope you don't attempt to put me in a position like that David. It wouldn't be necessary, and it wouldn't be nice of you to do.

There are three moderators that will move threads if they primarily fit in another category better than the SM forum. That's the best I can do. Right now, it's up to the people voting.

I'm sorry if you think I'm being unfair, but I've tried to do the best I can in this situation.

thanks,
json

I have a few things to add to your comments Schwim:

It is very diplomatic of you to allow a democratic vote on a your website. Thanks!

No matter what happens or what opinions are out there, this thread has received a lot of views.

Like you said, it can be shut down if it doesn't merit the space.

However I think it will be a great success because Husaberg make a great SuperMotard and you have an excellent Website! :)

Jason, I know you did not program PhpBB. It's a feature that should be implemented in that type of software. It was a general comment about forums software like this one or Invision (see KTMTalk), not something you should do. Just a misunderstanding.

I know

I understood your point froggy, I was simply responding to each as Taf asked me to do. I knew what you meant.

thanks,

Grok nailed it well with his posts.........when you have a SM Cat. other people who normally just lurk the site will come on in..... the sharing of knowledge will be invaluable....I'm the only Berg which will be involved in the race scene in WA and Oregon...not sure about Cali..........I plan to campain the bike hard and try to make my Berg brothers proud.....and spread the Swedish gospal...........the new SM Cat. will be diverse, informative and most of all be fun......it will grow the sport and this site will benefit from attracting a different group who really share the same love of the Blue and yellow machine.......as for the old timers here I hope you will continue to share your knowledge and experience with us newbies......as for Taffy.... come across the pond and you will get the red carpet treatment with a whole host of SM's to ride and good people to meet with and If you are extra nice I'll even let you swing a leg over the green machine (that is If Ya'll man enough) and after enjoy a couple black cans together and talk bikes........ :sandwich:

I wish You well and lets keep communicating !

Ciao tutti. FinMoto here and there.

I must say I'm beginning to find this thread highly amusing :D But I will make a more serious comment for once.

Firslty, it's because a mere suggestion for increasing the inclusion of a moderately different audience is causing such a stir.

What's interesting is that in many senses it is displaying quite a scary form of xenophobia [1]. It's scary because it is regarding such a completely trivial matter!

I really cannot understand why there is any issue whatsoever with adding choice for the visitors of this site (other than increasing maintenance requirements) especially if it might have the positive effect of widening and enrichening the community - and why would it not?

How on earth could this idea be devisive? I don't know it is only a click of a mouse button.

And whatever anyone would like to believe, supermoto does have its certain peculiarities that stand apart from any other discipline.

Additionally, I also suspect (mabe this is a totally incorrect assumption) that the very nature of this community as it stands may actually prevent inclusion from so many - and that is because so much of the community is often so technically focused and heavy. The addition of the sm forum may actually create another different kind of haven for people to enjoy.

I'm one of those people who is always for choice, rather than the prevention of it, especially if that prevention involves completely unsubstantiated [2] and prejudicial [3] assumptions that ere in the direction of limitation and exclusion, very much like many comments on this thread are - let people make the decision for themselves and see what happens.

Having added the new forum there is absolutely nothing stopping it from being removed should it be unsuccessful.

I think Jason is commendable in his approach to opening the the issue up to a vote, but to be honest I'm really surprised that it was necessary and that people didn't take a rather more open minded view.

This is a footnote for those not of native english (and, I suspect some who are  )
[1] xenophobia - in this context it means "those who are irrationally afraid of that which is strange or foreign".
[2] unsubstantiatied - unsupported by any evidence
[3] prejudicial - tending towards impairing rights or causing a decision or judgement on an improper basis

Cheers,
Simon

Don't confuse me with the facts, my mind is already made up! :chuckle:

Hi Simon,
Such is more often than not human nature. War, both primal and modern is testimony to such. :(

For what it may be worth:
It matters little to me what heading is used providing the content is relevant to Husaberg and / or the members of this site.

My personal UHE Haunts in order:

General, Mechanical, Electrical, Fuel, Other and on occasion Suspension.
If I find the SM content to be primarily that of dribble I shall quite simply skip over it. No big deal. In short Lets give it a whirl and see how it goes.

For the record:
I voted against a seperate heading mostly out of laziness as I simply grow tired of all the mouse clicking required to jump from section to section. :D

Kind Regards,
Dale

well it looks like we have a supermoto forum!lets hope it turns out to be a good thing.the site visitors from Europe have a lot more experience in this discipline so hopefully they will be active in getting the ball rolling.it will only be interesting if the serious supermoto guys take a real interest in the site and keep it lively.cheers,dan. :grouphug:
