SEM ignition stators

Hello
Can anybody tell me how many turns have position coil from SEM LC4 1997 165ohm ( I think 0,071Cu ) ???
THX

please read the owners doc miki?

i think you are a finn or a scando so please put this in your 'signature' and also which husaberg you ride.

welcome to UHE mate.

Stator

Hi Sparks,

Because you have a good reputation, I heard talk about you here in Sweden. I have starting problems on my HusaBerg engine (FE400 -94). I thought it was the stator, which was the problem, but now when I measured it, it seems OK:

Black - Red 1751 Ohm
Black - Green 23,4 Ohm

Are the values OK?

The metal surfaces are quite a bit rusty (see the picture), so that can cause (together with other problems) that it does not start easily, maybe?

Hi Victor,

Apart from the surface rust it doesn't look to bad, but I have had stators sent to me that you would swear were brand new but knackered.

Do a spark performance test, plug out HT cap off place ht lead about 10 to 12mm from cylinder head away from the plug hole and on a normal kick it should jump this gap with no problem, if intermittent or you find you have to close up the air gap then the stator is showing signs of weakness. But your readings are good.

Sparks.

RE: Re: Stator

I had already ordered a new stator when I found this thread otherwise I would have happily shipped mine off to sparks for a rewind.

My question to Sparks is: Can anything be done to a new std stator to improve its life?

Hi Dazza,

Not really, the problem with the original stator is the crap wire the factory use, the enamel on the wire is of poor quality.

I have had some in for rewind that have only ran for ten minutes but there again some a couple of years or more.

At the end of the day either water or heat will kill it, generally a bit of both.
Sorry to spoil your day.

Regards

Sparks.

I certainly cant do anything about the heat so I will just have to try hard to keep the water out.

Thanks for your input.

What about running some oil in the side cover, not filling it up, but enough that the rotor will pick some up and fling it around when the bike is running?

Will probablly need to vent the case for expansion as well.

The other enduro my fe 02 501 just stopped after 3 hrs like it ran out of petrol (it hadn't). Got no spark at all / all other electrics seem to work ok. Cant see any loose or shorted wires and can't seem to get a good V reading off my meter as the e-start has packed up again and kicking it on a digital meter seems to jump about. So I've checked the static resistance (stator unplugged as it says in the doc) - Red / Black 0 - yellow / black 0 / green / black 165 ohm.

Is that enough to say the sem has given up or do I need more tests.

PS the enduro was wet / muddy & was was revving it a bit - felt the stator cover when it packed up & it was boiling hot - could hardly keep my hand on it.

The stator cover will get as hot as the rest of the engine through conduction so not anything to worry about.

Have you let it all dry out well and try again with spark or readings to see if there is any improvement.

Or borrow a good stator from someone and see if you get a spark with that.

its not the pulse pick-up gone kaput?

You'll have to talk very loud & slow Cy...what's the pulse pick up, it that part of the stator.

Hi Arkley,

The pulse pick up is the coil that sends the message to the cdi telling it when to spark, this is your measurement between Black and Green 165 Ohms, the coil very rarely fails, it's always the Black to Red test that fails.
If it's an original stator like I said in an earlier posting it's heat, water or a bit of both that will kill it in the end.
Have you got sorted yet?.

Sparks.

Hi to all,

I bought KTM exc 300 (99) this year and still never ride it, I found that I have broken ignition SEM K11, and I wanted to rewind it actually I will bring it to local electric shop, I take stator apart and doing that I broke some leads, so I kindly ask does anyone of you have wiring diagram (schematic) of 1999 SEM K11 stator I would be more than grateful.

best regards to all, you have excellent forum.

Hey Sparks, how do you remove the resin on these old SEMs?

I use heat and a lot of years of experience, not enough and you can't get into it, to much and it melts the plastic bobbins, it's a fine edge.
Chemicals just make a big mess.

Sparks.

You can soak it in acetone, peel/cut/scrape the stuff off in layers, soak it again, et cetera. It's a tedious job, makes the mess that Sparks refers to and risks damage to the coils & their bobbins.

To avoid, opening new thread I will ask here. Is there stator of some new berg (2004-...) which fits to FE400E 2003 without rewind?

Thanks.
