SEM ignition stators

Hi guys!

Sorry! His size is big for all pictures! Their resolution is big because of the good visibility.
Be with patience.

Hi all!

I translate the text into English with pleasure, that you know what I wrote about.
Well?
(it is tiny with a misspelling :cyclops: )

hey guys im a new husaberg 501fe 1995, owner sins a month ago

and having problems with the stator probably just got 1,6k ohm's between red black and its realy hard to get it runing
so i wonder if any1 can tell me how to take the coils out without damage to much

got a retired guy that will rewind but im verry intrested to see how it works and hopefully even rewind it mysellf

sorry for my bad eng =O

Thanks to Sparks, Taffy, Dan at Motoxotica (and the rest of you I'm forgetting) my FE501 starts awesome!!! Just a touch of the starter button and it's running. Maybe I was cheating a bit since the bike had just rolled out of a warm house and the battery was fresh off the charger, but the starter sounded really strong and it fired immediately! I didn't even use the decomp lever (probably should have though). It started so well on the button, I forgot to try out my new kickstart shaft. Here are all the things I did:

- R6 starter
- YTZ7S battery
- Sparks rewound stator
- Better (extra) battery cables
- shimmed the torque limiter (did not check the torque, just shimmed it)
- replaced the sprague (looks like Dan sent me the upgraded '03 part)
- Purchased a Battery Tender Junior
- New spark plug (NGK cheapie)

OK. Getting no spark whatso ever. When I tested it earlier go intermittant spark but now nothing. New coil / nothing. When I test the volts on the stator black red unloaded (ie coil dissconnected) get about 30v - when I connect the red & blacks back up I get no volts.
I get 2 & 2 (load / unload) on the green black and th3 yellow blue is 3 unloaded & 0 loaded.

Can anyone eplain this - is my stator duff?

Hi Arkley,

Baring any bad connection I would say it is your stator that is failing, seeing as you have also fitted a new coil as well.
The main reason for no voltage when on load is because there will be shorted turns on the output soruce coils, the load will kill it dead.
I can see on all the SEM's I strip they have suffered shorted turns before finally packing in.
The wire that comes off is a mottled colour with green specks where the enamel has given up and oxcidised, this is where the turns become shorted when put under load.

Regards

Sparks.

Cheers Sparks - just checked the resistance - 180 on the green - less than 1 on the yellow / blue and red black is 1,500,000 yes 1.5 million. Would that make any sence ??

arkley will bealong later - happy as a pig in sh*&!! he popped over this morning and took a used stator away with him. next thing i know, he's calling me with the bike running!

apparently it started first touch of the button - the bike didn't even turn over!

Taffy

So; referring back to the above plus recent thread "nearly had enough" plus any other postings I've made over the last year - here's the lastet installment - really meant for any newbies or mechanically stunted people like me.

"nearly had enough" my last post was ..just come in to get new plug then I'll start it up...well It wouldn't b###dy start. I was distraught as I was close to the end of the road with Husabergs.

Called Taffy hoping he's say..don't be daft - just turn the bike to Mecca and it will burst into life...but he didn't. What he said was the same old..as we know is true - set the valves - get fresh fuel - CHECK THE SPARK.

Well I've never had a really strong spark & I thought this was normal. This time however, after a couple of weak sparks - then nothing. (I discovered the screw attaching the HT to the CDI was sheared so I replaced that - (but that's another story - cheers Joe) and still nothing.

Reluctantly I borrowed may mate (cheers Chris) & his volt meters to check the readings, all as clearly set out on the DOC, but for me this was bordering on goboldy goog - technical jargon, however, it was actually very easy to do if you just follow the directions.

Long or the short of it was, I figured the stator was dead - popped over to Taffy's 24/7 (cheers Taffy) and got a decent 2nd hand one.

Blimey - it sparked like fireworks night. Chucked everything else back on, fuel on - choke out - one twist & release of throttle - pressed the button (hurt leg yesterday trying to kick) burst into life immediatly. Adjusted the mixture & idle screws in accordance the the doc - put my lid & boots on & off I went beaming like a Cheshire cat.

I reckon this has been coming for some time and would suggest that anyone having starting issues MUST check the spark (again). If it's anything other than strong - do the stator tests. It's not as difficult as it sounds once you get into it.

Cheers for everyones help - I nearly did give up, but I'm confident this is it. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Hi Arkley123

Good to hear you got it sorted.
I suggested that you should check out your stator in your "Nearly had enough" thread.
The original SEM really is a POS - I know this because I have also been in your shoes.
The symptoms you had were exactly the same as mine.
Did you put a rewind in there or a 2nd hand original?
Don't wanna sound all doom and gloom but if it's not a rewind (Sparks is your man) then expect it to fail again shortly.
Like I said - I have lived that scene.

Cheers Coastie - I had noted your original comments - just trying to ignore them (cost - time - perceived technical effort etc). My new one is a 2nd hand (albiet nearly new) and agian I note your comments but time cost etc was the mother here. However, I respect your views and know now what to look for in the future. Cheers.

Yeah I hear ya. I did the same.
In any case to get the best out of any of these things make sure you don't let ANY water get in and don't torque up the bolts holding it too much. Hand tighten with an allen key and use a bit of loctite.

I have measured my values for my stator... anyone ever got these results?

red to black 7.48 k ohms
green to black 166 ohms

my red to black was almost double the normal amount... the stator looked like crap though rusty and the outer covering was chipping off...

I would say with a reading that high that one of the output source coils has gone pop and you are measuring through a carbon track.
I see this a lot when I strip off the wire, usually at the base of the winding.

Hallo there!

I´m on and off about changing my stator, or rather repairing it...

ok.. I know I haven´t measured it... but... it looks... not good...

My symptoms are... hard to start cold... but often easily started hot... but it seams to go nuts while rainy and moisturouse weather.. then it suddenly can become a b***h to start...

So... is startingproblems related to the stator related to wether you start the bike cold or hot or related to rainy weather?

/Rikard

I had the same with rainy weather. Checked behind the cover and it was wet !!! So no more rain-riding untill i get a gasket for the cover and the rubber penetrator sealed with additional silicone.
I wil also stick a bag of silicagel in there if space enough

Don't ride in the rain anyway, but you can get caught up !!

Your stator could be bad yes, but try measuring it and see what you get, and check for water behind cover after rain.

doesn't sound like the stator is top of the pile of things that it could be. once it's very hard to start it generally just wants to pack up and hardly run at all.

sparks:

I've got 4 stators lying around at home for my bike ( FE501 -90) and none of them are within the specified range, the best one has the following values red-black 1625 ohms, black-green 23ohms, will that be enough to start my bike? (After reading a bit I found the 1625ohms is within specs since it says 1750 +-10%)

The others read about the following red-black 1150-1200ohms and black-green 22-26ohms.

I'm thinking of sending you all 4 stators and have at least 1 or maybe 2 rewound and the others you can keep as part-payment as I saw in another post.

Hi Smurfen,

The stators you have their going by the trigger readings are pre 89 stators, stators from 89 to 2003 all had a trigger reading of 165 to 175 Ohms.
The earlier type will not work on the later type engine, but it is possible for me to rewind an earlier type stator to the later type spec.

Sparks.
