selector drum shoulder wear

the drums run straight out of the cases and i have considerable wear in the engine and some on the drum shoulder. it seems that they only contact over half the width of the allowed surface.

anyone else ever spotted this upon stripping?

whilst i'm here has anyone handled the later gear selector fork? it's meant to be a lot tougher isn't it?

Hi Taffy,

I´m not sure if I understand you right,
but I can confirm that the old shift drums are earlier worn out than the newer ones.
It is no problem to update the old engine with the new shift drum (modelyear 2000 and newer).
The selector forks of newer engines are exactly the same with the old ones, but they have little sleeves on the guide pins. These sleeves decrease scoring in the surface.

Hope you can imagine what I´m talking about...

yes i can imagine it hribman. but my bike is a post 2000 anyway.

Hi Taffy!!
The later 2004 on forks are a lot better than before sins they are heat treated and not made off butter!!

cheers missfire

but it's the drum in the engine case that is wearing out. although the shoulder is probably 10mm wide it seems to have rubbed REALLY hard on only about 5mm of it.

Hi guys,

yes I wondered if we´re talking about "old" engines pre 2000 or newer ones.
Taffy, after writing my post I realized that you must have been talking about your FE400 2002.

Until today I have never seen a worn 2001/2002 shift drum...?!!?
That´s new to me. Have you got a picture of that?
It´s also new to me that the 2004 forks are better. Thought they were the same before.
I didn´t know before that the old (pre 2004) ones were made of butter. :)
I ´ve never had a problem with them. And every engine I dismantled had the normal sign of wear. How many hours/kilometers did your engine work?

i don't have a clock. the speedo cable snapped on the opening ride (as with all husey OEM cable drives) and thern i went to endurotech and had two of those while they fell apart.

in the end i don't worry about it.

3.5 years of hard graft she's done!

regards

Taffy
