Just heard from the Molder. He says that I will probably be needed at the end of this week for a trial fitting of the prototype!!!!!

I'll let you know more as soon as I do. If I do indeed go out for a test fit I will be sure and take plenty of pics and post with my comments!!!! Almost there!!!

That's great Dale. Stay particular about the fit. My motto's always been "perfect with have to do". Although admittedly I don't always achieve perfection

Is this kit a done deal? I'm ready to order. Just need to know how it installs and if it's going to hold up to off road racing.

.... take off the stock fuel pump bracket on the bottom of the tank and replace it with our adapter plate, which, will also already have the fuel line and the other half of the quick disconnect on it.

Hi dale,

this means it is not compatible with the Safari Tank... or can the safari adapter be mounted on your aqdapter plate?

Hi JW,

I'm sorry I have no idea of whether or not this will work or not as I have not seen the safari adapter plate and have no idea how they get the fuel from their main, or saddle tank into the stock tank. Could you please explain how this works on their system?

Dale

sure, this is an image of the mounted adaptor. you drill a hole in the black plate to mount it.

This is an important consideration for me as well. I have already preordered the subframe tank. I have a 1100 mile dual sport ride coming up at the end of May. I am hoping the subframe tank will be in my hands before then, but if not I will be forced to order the Safari Tank. From the looks of the Safari Adapter it looks to me like it might be just a matter of plumbing the lines together to link the two to the main tank. Assuming there's enough room to do that of course in the tight confines of the Berg.

Update 04-12-10:

Well the molder was not ready for me last weekend. Apparently their main man at the female shop has been out for two weeks so work is not progressing as fast as it should have.

However, I spoke with Tom at the molder's this last weekend and he gave me a few photo's to share with you guys.

This first photo:

Shows the full female model that is ready for sand casting at the foundry.

The second photo:

Shows the female with one of the three pieces pulled back, this will be a three part mold so there are three separate castings.

This last photo:

Shows the sand cast of one of the three pieces ready for molten aluminum at the factory.

The latest word is that they "should" be ready by next saturday for the first test fit. I should know by Wednesday or Thursday whether or not they will be ready for me this weekend.

We are two months behind the original date the molder gave us, to say that we are now disappointed with progress is a bit of an understatement. Up till now we have relied on them to give us up dates, from here on out I will start checking in with them every other day to check on progress.

I want to thank all of you who have pre paid once again for your patience and continued support, we really appreciate it!!!

Unfortunately, the rate of progress is not really within our control, however, progress is being made albeit at a pace that we would like to see move faster.

I was also REALLY hoping the sub frame tank would work with the front Safari tank option to give me a total of about 20liters of fuel. If it doesn't work I will probably have to go with the Safari option only.

There should be no problem using the 70* Racing subframe tank with the safari main tank judging from the photo provided by JW. You will use the safari adapter plate, and just "T" into the line coming from the 70* Subframe tank, no problem.

Okay, got these pics from Tom at the Molders place today. It looks to me to be the bottom half of the main part of the mold. In the first picture you can see the little square slot for the rear fender and the battery box oval at the top.

In the second photo, you can clearly see the battery box oval thingie, and the third is a nice side view shot.

Obviously this piece needs some finishing as you can see the risers in the side shot and the flashing that needs to be removed. The other parts are in the sand, and will be cast tomorrow. If all goes well we will have a prototype by the end of the week and I'll be able to go out for a test fit on Saturday.

SWEEEEEET!! Now I'm happy again! Can't wait for them to be released!

thats good news dale, that it will work with the Safari tank.

good luck with the final steps!

From the looks of the safari tank adapter plate we are going to need shut off valves at both the subrame tank and the safari tank as well. Otherwise removing the stock tank could get a little messy if you don't drain the others first.
What is the plan for this with the subframe tank? Will there be a petcock?

the safaritanks has shut of valvels on both sides, and the adapter that connects with the origianl tank has a sut off valve also. I changed the original fuelline (quick connector) for easy removal of the gastank. That works great.

A petcock of sorts on the 70* Subframe tank, we wanted to be able to dis assemble the bike without fuel spillage, so we incorporate a quick disconnect similar to the stock one on the bike for the FI line. Except our quick disconnect will have a double sided shut off, so once you separate the two halves there will be no leakage. If you look back on page #6, at the first post on that page, you'll see a picture of the mock up with the Subframe model and a stock tank with our adapter plate and the quick disconnect laying the position where they will go, except without the barbed fitting from the tank, and no fuel line. Our tank will come with the adapter plate, and half the quick disconnect mounted to hose and clamped to the adapter plate. So it will just be a matter of cutting the hose off and putting on a "T" or Wye fitting to tie into the safari hoses and into the safari adapter plate.

Our adapter plate will be an aluminum piece that totally replaces the plastic fuel pump holder.

From the pictures I've seen, the Safari tank has petcocks at each fuel tap location, looks like there are two petcocks on the Main tank and the saddle tank they have made, each with petcocks at each tap location. So that combined with the quick disconnect/double shut off should provide you with spill free dis assembly.

04-13-10: Here's the latest from the molder. Two of the pieces for the three part mold have been cast. The photo posted here is of the good face of the female mold cast in sand, in the follow block and just about ready for aluminum to be poured. So this is what the top side of the new subframe tank will look like when it is cast in plastic.

04-13-10: The same piece a few hours later cast in Aluminum. Tomorrow they will jack hammer off the hardened sand, and cut off the risers and start finishing the mold! I won't know until Thursday whether or not we will have our first prototype by the weekend. At least the mold is finally cast!!!
