basic mod to improve the life of your fork seals

- cut a bit of foam 10mm x 10mm x 160mm
- soak the foam in wd40
- prize out the fork dust wiper seals
- install the foam in the small cavity between the fork seal and the wiper seal
- install the wiper seal (will be tighter fit now)
- remove foam every few rides and clean

much better than fork seal socks

Have you tested this mod long term?

WD40 is bad for rubber, makes it hard after time. I would recommend some other, no so aggressive oil.

If you must do this, what's wrong with fork oil?

In my experience the use of 'seal savers' and this foam technique just traps dirt and acts as a grinding paste which promotes wear. Tried both over the years and now just do the stock thing. I do pull the dust seals from time to time to clean out the crap that accumulates though.

If you ride mud on consecutive days, check and/or wipe down your fork legs and maybe shock shaft before riding the next day as the mud can dry out and end up going past a seal if you are using the travel up. Same on the road bike with insect strikes on the fork legs.

wiping down fork tubes like steve said works

I have a 98yz400 with about 40 000km on an origonal fork seal one side, the other one leaked after about 10 hours from new, its replacement is still in there. my berg has 8000km on its origional seals.

if you hit a heap of grasshoppers or some shrubs the residue is almost immediately hard crud stuck on very well it takes a lot of pressure to get it off, is that what the WD40 is for?

nothing wrong with the idea bowser

If i was using fork seals more often I'd try it.

Did Terry suggest this to you when he worked on your suspension?

He suggested this to me when he did my previous bike.
