Hey guys and gals, thought i better introduce my myself :) i bought a fe650 beegining of march and bloody hell is that crazy bike or wat. Admitedly i like rush and i sure got that part of the bargain, so my cousin (525exc 05) and my berg' went for a ride up at the glasshouse mtns, all forestry roads with sand and sinkholes that you couldnt see, so we are in there for bout a hour giving eachother **** (20 years and i finally roosted him) and my water seal lets go. Green blood every where and nowhere near home so im stranded for 3 hours while he gets the ute. Bike shop replaced the seal and it kept leaking so the cases have been split and is now getting a full rebuild on the bottend, nearly 2 months later and there still 'waiting' on parts.
I love the bike, and that its getting a free'ish rebuild but come on 2 months to do the motor is just to much even if your paying for it.

When it was delivered it had a new speedo. So 2 hrs and 174 km is all i have gotten for 5G in 2 months.
Thanks for listening and i will def post about my next trip when i finaly get her back

well lad.....thats the catch when you buy a second hand bike, car caravan or whatever.
it may go for a long time or a little, who knows
how many hours has it done?
there must have been grooves in the water pump shaft/balancer shaft for them to split the motor.
you can build the shaft up with a weld then file it back.thats what i done about 3 years ago & its still without leaks.
no doubt that would have saved me hundreds or dollars for a new shaft.
orangeberg's got that upgraded water pump kit.
the genuine water pump seals always leak.
what parts are you waiting for?
..weed..

Hey popup
Waiting on genuine main bearings. Already got the New tps, rings, gearbox bearings, kick start shaft, and god knows wat else. No idea howmany hours its done as it has new speedo/hour meter.
Mechanic didnt want to put orangeberg's kit in :-( so guess who will be getting a verry bad call if it breaks again on my cape york trip ;-) on the plus side i got a 12 ltr fuel bladder for her today and the wealth of info on this site is amazing and damn usefull to.

So thnkyou to everyone who has posted with tips and fixes

Chris

Hey guys an gals, just a update incase you were wondering, aparently i should have the bike back tomorrow all rebuilt :) aparently they were waiting for a kickstarter bearing for over a month, took me 1 phonecall and voila express post from melbourne to bris........ So all going to plan i will be a happy lad tomorrow :) just a quick question tho when, when a shop says it has a rebuilt topend does that normally meen its had new rings put in?

Cheers and happy riding
Chris

For a rebuilt top end I'd expect new rings at the minimum, probably be expecting the head/valves to have been checked also. If all they replaced in the top end was rings you would assume (dangerous I know) the rest of the top end was in spec.
Where are you having the work done? Somewhere in Brisbane?

The work is being done by pro griffin, sunny coast. Would rather orangeberg do it tho

All went back together with dificulty and stuff it all the damn water seal starts leaking again (i think they might have scratched it) mechnic was on it for 3 hours today trying to change it but alas no luck.
So maybe this week i will get it ??????

5 weeks till she goes to cape york and back so im kinda stressing :?

Doddzie

presumably it is leaking from the little hole around the front of the left cover right?

all they ever needed to do was to fit a new polymide bearing inside the cover and a new seal on the outside of the cover, that was your total effort.

suggest you do the following
get a new polymide 0625 062 013
get a new seal and make sure it is brown in colour with an alloy rim to it.

remove the old seal and press out the bearing. the rubber seal will have come away from the bearing but no worries
press the new bearing in and then the seal from the front.

now there is an absolute classic mistake that all mechanics make and if these boys have done it then I personally would just sit and sob (given that you had the engine rebuilt) and that is that, well, people put the seal in the wrong way round!

you must be able to see the back/the groove, the spring side of the seal not the side with the numbers.

the next CLASSIC mistake is how people address the fitting of the cover: it's got to go down evenly and most send the left side ahead of the right and nip the seal. make sure that it goes down equally and evenly. a good indicator is that if it's uneven, one side of the waterpump seal will bend right over and be ready to be 'NIPPED' as it goes over the circlip groove.

I have no experience of the orangeberg conversion but I can say that I've NEVER EVER had any trouble. it's a poor worker that blames his ttols is an old saying here and there is too much of it when it comes to this application.

ditto here on proper techniques... I've had my left cover off at least 5-6 times with no problems using the original water pump seals. Start it onto the kickstart and shifter shafts first.. if it's lined up correctly then the water pump shaft will come straight through, not on an angle.

if its only leaking water ( no oil) you could just replace the WP seal, remove the outer WP cover and the impellor remove the seal and replace with a 10x18x6 from a bearing shop supposed to be x4 but 6 works. remove the seal with 2 self tappers into it, doesn't matter if it doesn't work out its worth a try as you might save having to take the whole cover off, its not easy but I have done it twice on my bike.

I needed to fix mine quick for a weekend ride once so I put a 3mm screw in the weephole, a bit dodgy but it worked short term 8O, the hole is now tapped for the 3mm screw and I have a few in my toolkit

I dont think the mechanic will be working on another "berg" for a while, he has had a hard time with this one lol.

Bushmechanic, I will def take a small screw with me now :)

Taffy & DuaneB, I will keep that in mind for when i get the call about them not being able to fit it properly.

cheers for the tips guys

Hi Guys,

I am only a newbi but, with my 650 putting the clutch cover on evenly was more difficult than necessay. I found going on kick start end first best as previously posted but my frame was tight there. I eased a 1/16" of the frame buttress and the cover slides on nice. Every frame is a little different I guess and I don't claim to be expert far from it but this was my solution.

hey guys,
called the bike shop today and aparently its good to go so should be delivered this week ....... :D

cant wait to go for a test ride and start to set it up for my trip.

perhaps you have a 2001 or 2003 or whichever year it was but yes there was a year there between 2001 and 2003 when you had to grind a bit off the frame.
