MaxxCross Desert IT tires.

I have come to the conclusion that the stock Husaberg tires (2005) are terrible in the sand. Even though I am not a sand fan that is about 50% of the terrain here.

Its now time for some new rubber and I was looking at the MaxxCross Desert IT tires. Has anyone tried them? What makes for a good sand tire?
Tall knobs? Would this tire have problems with an occasional vet MX track practice romp?

With the stock (and fairly worn) front tire anything but straight line, high speed travel can be disastrous (read trying to turn).

M or S 12's I like the wear of the M 12 and John likes the big 140 S 12. Both work very well

Give the MAXXIS a try Eric, and let us know!

I have been using Dunlop 756 F (racing Replica) fronts and 739 Desert A/T rears for several years now. I used to use Michelin S12's but switched because the knobs on the fronts flexed too much on the hard pack and got ripped off by the desert rocks and the rears wore out too soon for me.

The 756 F has been discontinued, but I really like it.

I was thinking of trying the new Dunlop 952s next time. They are advertised as patterned after the 756 but modified for outstanding durability.

Edit: I lied, the Dunlop web site states they are patterned after the 752, not the 756.

Joe

I've got one on the back right now with two rides on it (approx 150 miles). So far wear is really good, no chunking. Didn't work real good in the mud, but worked good in the rocks. Haven't had it in real deep sand yet but seems to be OK in most sand washes. I don't think this is suppose to be a sand tire per se, as it has small knobs that are relatively close together. I have more trouble with the front in sand washes (Scorpion Pro).

Thanks for all the input and Joe I just may give the Maxxis a whirl and report back. The problem is not really the back tire. Its the front. All it wants to do is wash out unless you are going straight. I am hoping that its only a tire issue and not due to the quicker handling of the 05's. If its a geometry issue I would be suprised though. Most likely a rider issue but I will not admit to that until I have exhausted all other possibilities

I run nothing but Maxxis IT's, I have run the Desert It at Moonrocks and the tire held up great, worked grerat in the rocks!! Give it a try.

I never rode on the stock rear tire. It had those Euro knobs on it so I gave it to a friend. The front Pirelli is a decent desert tire.

I have been fun riding and racing on Maxxis Desert ITs and like them. They are a six ply tire so they have stiffer side walls which make them feel a little loose. I run lower pressure in the rear to compensate. I like the motocross version of the IT for the front. Both work well but the MX tire flexes a bit more and seems to have better grip in the sand. I inflate them to 15psi and never any issues. We race in Baja with Tire Balls at 13psi and they rock. You can get Maxxis tires at Chapparell in Riverside for 42 bucks each. For the price you can't go wrong.

If your leaning towards 739s, go for it. I have been using a 739 on my Berg for a few weeks now. I found it on sale for 60 bucks. I have about 650 miles on it and wear is normal. Pre-running this weekend will finish the tire off. Sunday, I'll put on two Maxxis tires since the stock front will have about 1200 miles on it and the 739 lasted about 800.

At $42.00 that is all the excuse I need to drive an hour and a half up to Chaparral Motorsports. I can spend 2-3 hours easy walking through the store. Their tire dept. is larger than most entire dealerships. If anyone is ever in the So. Cal. area a trip to Chaparral is a must.

Eric,

I would highly recommend the Maxxis Motocross IT tire to you. I have about five rides on my tire without any chunking or other problems. You are probably riding similar terrain to what we have over here in Phx and for the cost you can't beat these Maxxis tires. As Kraig mentioned, the tire hooks up well in the rocks and gnarly stuff (Desert), I will vouch for the Motocross tire in the rocks also, and the (Motocross) tire is a pretty good sand tire as Morgan mentioned. The compound wears well and I am swapping the tire direction now after my third ride weekend... the second weekend ride on the tire being three days over about 150miles during the Phx group ride you missed in February. Hope this helps. Take care.

Regards,

What about Tera-flex?

It comes in 150/90-18

I have heard great things about these tires but they are very hard to get here in Canada.

That would probably be the rear tire to have on a 600-650. I would hate to be behind one in any type of terrain.

I put one on for our Nov. desert ride @ Jawbone. It does hook up good in the sand, but it's a very heavy tire & hard to mount. I pinched the tube mounting it. Just took it off, don't think I'll use another. They're very stiff also, which can be good or bad. It was flat on our first ride the other day & it didn't even come off the bead, couldn't run much air because of the stiffness. Think I'll stick to the M5B for the desert.

Terror Flex. I don't care how much power or how how many cc's my bike is, I am not going to use an 18 pound tire. Of course it hooks up--it saps so much power that the wheel hardly turns. 18 pounds is a lot of unsprung weight when you consider most rear tires are in the 10-13 pound range.

The Maxxis IT is also a very heavy tire.

I rode 120 miles in a combination of real rocky, sandy and hard packed with a layer of silt on top of it last Saturday with a Dunlop 952 120/90-18.

This was on my 501. This is the best rear tire I have ever had. I saw how the other guys were sliding around, especially on the silt and I was just tracking or with a controlled slide with much more power on tap in my bike, so I was really pleased.

I don't think there is so many choices on the front tire sizes, but I would like some input:

Can someone recomend the best size for high dessert/ rocky conditions, thanks.

Let me throw in my experience with the Michelin Baja tire, front and back. Really hard to get them on the rims by hand, expensive, not enough grip in hard packed sand, ok in the loose sand, ok in rocky conditions. Rode about 900 mls and the back tire is worn out.
For me it the tires were not worth the money, here in Holland I paid about $200,00 for the set..... hoping they would last....

i have been trying all sorts of tires lately on my 550, been through 3 this month. i ride in crested butte colorado so we get a little bit of everything, rocks, roots, mud, and a fair amount of hardpack, not much sand though. have run a dunlop 952 and didn't think it lasted worth a piss, i think it was toast in less than 300 miles, the pirrelli mt 18 about the same, maxxis it didn't hold up to well either, bought a kings kt9661 dot tire for 38 bucks and it lasted longer than all the tires above. IRC ve33 seem to last pretty long, have a michelin m12 on now and am very happy with it. put over 300 miles on and still looks great, no chunking and very minimal wear, i may of found my tire, and 58 bucks delievered to my door.
FYI- dennis kirk will beat anyones price on tires by a buck. IE if the maxxis is 42$ at chapparal the will give it to you for 41$, ship it to your door, wont charge sales tax, and shipping and handling is free if you spend over 100$, and you save the money on gas. i have done this numerous times.
good luck and keep ridin
