has anyone had any experience trying to buff out the plastics? I would like to try and bring back some of the original shine on the plastics. I have tried rubbing compounds and my secret weapon on plastic "soft scub with bleach" to no avail, works really well getting the chalkiness out of my fiberglass boat. was wondering if wet sanding and buffing it out would work. But i wanted to check here before I attempted it. I am going to contact dark ind. to see if they can come up with the oem graphics thanks to skinny. nice looking bike by the way. and does anyone know of any kind of sealer that can be applied to the tank to keep the gas fumes from bubbling up the new decals? there has to be one somewhere, hell we can put a robot on mars.........LOL. May the new year find more time for all of us to have the berg between our legs...........

Check with your local bike shops, there is a product out there for restoring plastics. I have always used lots of soap and water, then wipe down with WD40, the only problem is you must keep re-aplying the WD to keep it looking good. The best solution is new plastic.Hope this helps.

It's called "Plastic Renew"I bought some to try on the rear fender of the old Katoom.It consists of various grades of wet/dry sandpaper and steel wool.You sand it down to a fine finish then apply the liquid,let dry,buff,repeat and so on.When you're done you have an unnaturally shiny piece of plastic.If you've ever seen someone varnish plastic;this is what it looks like because that is what you've just done.It also won't stand up to any bike cleaner.You must clean it with only the mildest of detergents.Even the better dishwashing liquids like Dawn will peel it off.If you want to come and get it,you can have my bottle :lol:
 
mine shine up good after every ride if i use Silicon Spray and then whipe it off.
 
Not only a PITA, but a marketing scam as well. 20.00 bucks for a couple of pieces of sandpaper and a small bottle of liquid that is nothing more than liquid FLOOR WAX.

Go buy some Mop n Glow from the grocery store for a couple of bucks. Does the same thing as Plastic Renew.
 
I have buffed plastic and had good results.
Wet sand any scratches with 1000, 1200 or 1500 grit paper. This, of course, can be very tedious. I then use a professional Milwaukie buffer with foam pads and start going through different rubbing compounds. You need to be very careful not to overheat the plastic with the friction of the buffing wheel.

hmmmmm I probably shouldn't post this, but I will anyway, it will open a whole new discussion.......on my 82 yz I used softscub w/ bleach then waxed it and it came out like new.......what is the difference between jap plastic and euro plastic? deep scratches are still there........but overall shine is abundant.......
 
use floor polish like mop&glo.
scrape out the big scratchs with a razor.
can apply multiple coats.
cheap and good

Try some good ol' Armourall and some elbow-grease, it wont remove the scratches, but it will make the plastics look as shiny as new.

dont get it on the seat, or anything else that is meant to be grippy - incl. brake discs, grips etc.
