later gear selector claw fitted

i've just fitted the later gear selector claw today and will report how it goes.

the boss that fits into the engine case now sits on a shoulder of welded metal that forces the base plate 3mm away from the engine instead of 1.5mm.

the base plate and the claw plate are far thicker at 2+mm instead of 1.5mm. i ground the sharp edges off as per the old model plates.

this has forced the cross spring away from the engine some 4-5mm. there is a 6mm thread screw that screws through the middle of the spring and into the case with a dowelled collar on it. this 'post' sends the gear selector claw back to it's central position.

however with the whole unit now being taller, the gear selector claw now rubs up against the back face of the 'star' washer on the selector scroll.

no good.

so i have had 1mm removed from the shoulder of weld behind the baseplate. the 1mm seems enough.

in the meantime-another problem! the cross spring has risen up over the dowel onto the head of the allen screw which has a far larger diameter. this forces the cross spring open and slackens the lever.

i initially took a 4mm longer allen screw and added 4mm more of dowel but alas the clutch assembly sat on it so i knew i had to use the original set-up.

the answer here was to grind the diameter of the head of the screw down to the same as that of the dowel. it doesn't have to do too much so it should be fine.

so i've milled 1mm off the base circle of the baseplate post and i've ground down the central screw to the same diameter as the dowel it holds down.

let you know how the first ride goes as i'm out this weekend at the annual john banks national enduro.

sorted!

Hi there sir,

Is the point of this(or at least part of it) to cure the sticking shifter woes that your gen bike gets? If so, I'd be very interested in how it works for you and some pics the next time you open it up.

thanks,

i took photos of the modded parts json and after the weekend i will hopefully put them up as the right parts to do the job. right now they're untested.

i've had sticking gears ever since i've had the bike and a lot of neutrals lately as everything wears out.

cheers

if you tell me why, when i download from my documents a photo (that i reduced to 300 x 400) the site suddenly decides i'm not logged on i promise to upload the photos i took!

raced with the new gear selector claw today and for the first time since i've owned the bike i had no false neutrals and although each gear had to be selected with clear purpose-i never had it jump out of gear either!

on the last lap i couldn't change gear a couple of times but it was after a fall and probably had more to do with a bent lever etc.

100% success!!!

regards

Taffy
