Is the site healthy?

Actually I pretty much quit coming here once I got my bike. Not because I lost interest or anything but because the site is too big and complex to find anything. I think there's way too many categories to really be useful.

I really have to disagree. I surf (and lurk) way too much at many sites. This one is one of the easiest to nagivate. And the signal to noise ratio here is great. Really good content, and mostly pretty intellegent discussion.

When I am looking for something specific, I can usually track down the info I need very quickly. Given the amount of info here, I think that is quite an achievement which can only come from the current structure. The doc helps, as does the front page with the most recent posts, and I think the amount of info in a pretty compact site is astounding.

Maybe this is just my personal taste, but my compliments to the chef :D

Having a thread for your specific bike has other limitations if that's all you read. For example if someone has a problem with, say, the front disk brake locking on with no warning and causing a crash, and they post about it in the thread for their bike which isn't the bike you ride so you're not reading that thread. However, both bikes use the same front disk setup so it could also happen to you. Maybe someone would think to copy it to all the bike threads where that disk is fitted, but then you end up with lots of duplicated entries, each of which can head off in a different direction as people reply to it differently on each thread.

we have the problem of do we know things about models or things about the problems. I know about brakes and can answer the question. the last 5% of the knowledge rests with 1% of the people. you come here for the right answer and 95% of the people will know it but it's the 1% of the people that make the site!

It took some of us (me) a phucking war to get to this clear situation. the doc is pretty much my compilation with credits to others knowledge in brackets. but when i stopped - it stopped.

nobody will do one for the LDCs because nobody here feels they have all the answers. a very difficult scenario. people say that it's a great and knowledgeable site often, but it's actually about hard work and graft. some of it is commercial or even a 'clever idea' but mostly just plain graft by a few members.

Hmmmm. So on second thoughts, do you think it might be best to leave the forum posts where they are?

You caused me to pause and for that I thank you. Upon further reflection, I've decided, we don't need less categories. We need more. I will use KTMT as a guide:

Borrowing some category ideas from them, I've come up with some potential category additions:

  • Categories:
Post in here if you don't know how to use the forum
    Riders who are dead
    Riders who are dying
Riders we thought were dead but are feeling much better now
    Questions asked a lot
    Questions asked a few times
Questions nobody has thought to ask yet
    Womens forum
    Mens forum
Forum for men that are planning to become women
Forum for women that are planning to become men
Forum for only certain people to be able to use, but it's probably not you
Forum to explain the category above this one

I've got more, but to be honest, sorting the threads is proving to be somewhat difficult.

forum for those who are thirsty from reading about forums after work leading to alchoholism and the development of a support group contained thererin said forum :eek:ccasion5:

having to go to page 8 of the emoticons to find the cheers beers one is a little disouraging.. or is that the idea

Oh bugger it schwim, taffy ? gawd help us which part of my frame do I cut first the 9" is ready to go Im just having trouble finding instructions .... hic slurp

I was hoping he would come back and say he meant category rather than thread, but I have seen it all done on one thread so you never know.

Yes, catagory or folder or whatever you'd like to call it.

Your example is actually an example of why you should have less categories instead of more. If we have a generation change than that means there's not really much or any carryover, ie the 09 thing. Brakes is a weak example while having a category for "Fuel" is sort of ironic when the two generations have absolutely nothing in common. If your bike misses do you post under electrical, fuel or mechanical? Really you'll have to post your question into three different forums.

I'm not saying that there shouldn't be any categories just less. The other example of KTM talk is perfect - RFS is a generation and all discussions of those bikes are in a single category - not subdived into wheels, fuel, exhaust etc. Same with LC8, LC4 and 2 strokes. ADV Rider doesn't put a category for fuel that everyone can ask fuel questions in. They do the same thing as KTM talk but more general: KTM 950, BMW GS, Singles, Street bikes, etc. BMW and KTM drive that site so they can afford the full single category.

Right now the site requires you to browse seven categories if you want to keep up on mechanical.

As for the comment of migrating all 108,000 posts into a single category - well you'd still be half a million short of the BMW GS category, 175,000 short of the KTM 950 category and well less than half of the RFS category on KTM Talk. Each of those is considered the "home" for those bikes and they're incredibly useful. There are just over 5,000 threads on "Tech" for this site - hardly anything.

This thread asked where everyone was and I suggested why, I personally, don't spend much time here. But feel free to add more categories - I'd suggest breaking wheels down into; tubes, rims, spokes, hubs, bearings and tires. If there's need you could add a category for valve stems...

First off, allow me to apologize for my light hearted reply. It seems that you took it to be mocking. In the end, I don't make any big decisions here, I just implement the suggestions, so I don't have any investment in the current structure. It's just what the popular vote wanted. I'll be more serious this time, I promise.

Exactly! This is why I was having problems wrapping my mind around your issue. I don't understand why you're ok with clicking "next page" 40 times on the KTMT site, but not going to four other categories to view 1 page apiece on this one. It seems there's not much real difference between the two.

You're dealing with 6 of one and a half dozen of the other. Threads are sitting in a big bag of other threads. We could categorize them the way you like and others(the same others who came up with the current category structure) would post to say they're leaving and never coming back because of the grave injustices that have been forced upon them with the new category structure(if I had a dollar for every time Taffy said he was leaving, not only would I be a very happy man, but I'd have a few dollars too). I could busy myself to the end of time making the change only to piss off the next guy that has a better method. In the end, if you're going from page to page aimlessly hoping to stay current on any topic, there's much more efficient ways to do it on any site. This forum has so few topics, it's kind of silly to think that any particular category structure is necessary. You don't have to view every category if you want to stay abreast of all the pressing news that is being posted to this forum. Simply viewing the"view unread posts"page (link found at the top of the board index) will give you the threads that have been posted to since you last visited. This of course wouldn't work if you were dealing with a large number of posts per day, like on ktmt or tt, but you could do this weekly on this site and browse every thread in mere minutes.

My suggestion concerning searching for particular information on any forum is to not use the built in search system, but use the guys that perfected it. Doing a google search with "site:husaberg.org" appended to the query will give you results only from husaberg.org. You can search any site with this. It makes for much easier searches in forums and provides better results.

I'm not trying to talk you out of any of your opinions. I just don't think that on a site this small, the method of thread containment should matter much at all, due to the simple fact that you could view a week's worth of thread topics in under 5 minutes. If you're not here weekly, but looking for particular information, the last thing you should do is go to a category and begin viewing threads in chronological order hoping for a relevant topic. You should be using a search provider for that.

What about tire balls? The Bib mousse? How could you forget those? Oh, and mags. I love mags.

Ok, a little light heartedness in there, but I really can't help myself most of the time.

thanks,

I've never threatened you with leaving Json but from now on I'll be sure to threaten you with staying for the rest of my life! :D :D

you are still nuts but I can deal with it as I have similar symptoms to a lesser degree.

All three of my therapists agree that I define what is normal. In fact, they call me Mr. Normal. Or Abby.

In the end I guess it boil's down to "you get what yo pay for".
In the case of this site, anyone that comes here got the deal of a lifetime.

No worries - I'm glad you have a sense of humor.

Actually I don't think it's a grab bag of threads and I think there's a method to it that works - the most recent posts are always at the top. That means that something this is currently being discussed is on the first page. That could be an FI discussion or tire balls but being on the front page makes it relevant. Of course some clown will start a thread to discuss oil and in our perfect world someone will reply to search as it's been discussed a million times and (perfect world) the thread would die and migrate back 10 or 20 pages. Search would allow people to find old relevant posts and update them instead of starting a new one (perfect world again).

This to me is what is useful about the larger groupings. I don't have an issue with my bike - it's perfect. I would like to open up a single thread to see what the mechanical discussions are though. If tire balls are the rage I want to get in on the action but aside from a slow leak on my front tube I have no reason to search wheels. The only fuel thing I'm interested in is Dales tank but that isn't in fuel - go figure.

Oh, and I did pay for this site! Either $25 or $50 bucks when I got my bike. Just saying that a lot of other sites have a way that I've found works. I will say that "view unread posts" does work pretty well and it's what I typically use when I stop by.

If I think of something I need and it's fuel related I can scroll the fuel area real quick for a couple of pages and find what I want or start a search. it never normally fails.

the search facility like most doesn't allow a narrow or precise enough search but I always seem to get what I need.

it's great.

Yep, ride was excellent, if a little moist. Got home and collected the missus and did another 5,000 kms in the 4wd out to the Flinders and the Hill via the Murray and Hattah again. More research for next year's trip to Broome via the centre and POIs enroute. Been on the road again this last weekend to Albury via Canberra and now trying to start my Tax return. I'll send you some more info re the suspension weekend later.

The attached files are actually Google Earth links, you've got to download them and change the txt extension to kmz as kmzs aren't allowed here for some reason.

My 2 cents....I just signed up a few weeks ago because I bought a used 04 fe501 and new nothing about the bike. I was looking for some info and advice and a few members replied to my post. It felt great to know that I was not alone and that I actually had somewhere to ask questions. I have since been on the site several times reading older to posts to find out more about husabergs and how it relates to my bike. I think this site is excellent, especially for newbies like me. It would seriously suck if this site was not around. Keep up the good work!

here! here!

I'd like to see in a years time where all the fancy pants LDC boys are....still changing sprockets and asking questions like: 'does my bum look big in this'!

the site was nothing without lineaweavers input at the beginning. he MADE the site. I'd like to think I have more than added to his work indeed to have taken over where he left off but until I get onto the new bike I can't see anyone being GENEROUS enough with their info, mindful enough to share there opinion, or hard working enough to find out instead of bloodywell talking all day.

we tried separating the issues and the subjects became a nightmare to control. not only that but exactly as bushie says, if you know forks you know any forks and can help even if you haven't got an LDC. but can you tell them that? no! they spend all their lives doubting the genuine people and then ask you if they should buy this go-faster square wheel that is all the rage! i mean WTFiH are they like?

"if i bore out my bike by 1mm will i have to rejet the bike?'.

Well it's been a year today :clock: since you posted that Taffy and I'm still here :hello2:
