Is the 501 rod really any different than the 550 rod???

Hi,
Question for all the motor gurus. I'm looking to get a squish clearance closer to ideal with an off the shelf piston, and assumed that I could go the route of using a 501 rod kit (Stated as being longer) to get to a zero deck height.

But, appearently my bike already has a 501 rod in it, with a 156 rod casting number (I did a comparison with a new 501 rod kit which also has a 156 marked rod, part number 210-190-01) My bike has had many motor mods done to it by the previous owner, so I could possibly assume that it was replaced with the 501 rod at that time.

501 rod measured out at 123mm center to center, and mine measuring out as the same.

Questions:
What is the deck height of the stock 550, since mine is still about 0.4mm below zero deck height measured at the edges of a 470 domed piston? ie. not taking the dome into account.

Does the 470 piston perhaps have a slightly different pin height?

And/or, perhaps is the 501 rod not really any different than the 550 rod, and my bike still has the original rod???

In order to obtain a tighter deck clearance you will need to have a custom rod, piston, head gasket or some combination of all three manufactured and / or deck the sleeve and cylinder housing.

You don't happen to have a casting number on the rods do you, because I only measured the rod out to be 123mm for both as stated above??? I'll double check my measurements tonight, but I triple checked them on each the first time.

Looks like I will replace what is currently in the engine, since a custom piston and/or rod would be cost prohibitive, and decking the sleeve and cylinder or a custom head gasket would not be viable for me( due to the centerline distances between the cam to counter balance drive shaft and corresponding cam chain length).
 
I checked again, and am still measuring 123mm.

I'm measuring lower piston pin bore to upper crank pin bore, then adding to upper piston pin bore to lower crank pin bore, and dividing by 2. I'm using a digital caliper with knife edges, and measures in 0.01mm increments.

Roughly:

After much research I have derived the following albeit without the advantage of an 01 / 02 550 connecting rod to measure.

Somewhere along the line myself and / or others inverted physical measurements.

I belive the correction is:
2001-2003 501 = 123mm (210-190-01)
2001-2002 550 = 124mm (210-191-01)
2003 550 = 123mm (210-190-01)

2001 - 2002 501 / 550 shared the same main cases however had separate cylinder head castings.

2003 510 / 550 share a head casting with the 650 and common cases with one another.

Compression ratio was reduced on the 550 in 03 as a result of using a common cylinder head and rod length. Obviously the change in compopnents was to reduce manufacturing costs and not that of increasing performance.
