I had 16/42 on originally but i found I was hitting the top of the revs far to often in top gear. So I’ve dropped the rear. Only went to 38 as I had one available. Feels good to be honest.
just swop them around a bit to work out whether it is a guide problem or a valve problem.
you have to be so careful with those old heads because the collect groove seems OK but there's always a 'chip inside the spring housing on the stem and then this has to come down through the guide. I use my old micro file set....after I've done my nails (of course darlings!). I think the chip is caused by the bottom edge of the collets.
Last night I managed to get the head in the house to have a good look round.
I’ve noticed that some of the valves have marks on them around 1 inch from the top. It looks as if they have been catching between the oil seal and valve guide?
The scratches are horizontal and not along the length of the valve.
It looks as if the valves haven’t been quite straight and have rubbed.
So do you guys think I could dress the valves and guides or is that impossible with the tolerances involved. Wasn’t really planning on spending a fortune on the head.
I do need some new oil seals... but can’t seem to get the old ones off!
Oh and one thing I did spot was on that first picture the valve has a slight flat on it. Both inlets have it. It’s not on the back sealing face just the bottom? Any ideas?
Had to go back to the garage to check my sanity. I found this. Well I had seen it earlier but didn't think much off it. I think there's a bolt under it.
i am working on a 2001 650 with an oil leak in the same position as the bodge-it on yours Greg (crack in the sidecover where the bolt head seats).
wonder if its a common weakness?
