surely that 16/38 gearing is way too tall for even your 650?

or is it an overdrive?

I had 16/42 on originally but i found I was hitting the top of the revs far to often in top gear. So I’ve dropped the rear. Only went to 38 as I had one available. Feels good to be honest.

Today I decided I didn’t like the original clutch and front brake fitted to my berg. They rattled and didn’t feel too good.

So I’ve replaced them with Ducati 999 ones.

The levers cane with and not really my choice. The master cylinders are a little bit bigger than I expected. But they are all fitted and working.

Just did a quick mot search for bergbro trying to find some info on his 650.

So decided to check mine.

This is the one when I bought it. From DCR in Preston

Then I sold it to these guys who prepped it and passed it. I’m not sure when they sold it.

Then this is the next MOT

It’s not been used then for 5 or 6 years! It pretty much was the bike I sold!

It all looks good to me? Anyone see anything of concern or anyone think of anything I should do or check?

I’ve got a new cam chain ready to fit, just need a few gaskets and I’m good to go!

I did notice two of the valve were a little stuff to remove? It was one of each type to. Not both exhaust or both inlets.

just swop them around a bit to work out whether it is a guide problem or a valve problem.

you have to be so careful with those old heads because the collect groove seems OK but there's always a 'chip inside the spring housing on the stem and then this has to come down through the guide. I use my old micro file set....after I've done my nails (of course darlings!). I think the chip is caused by the bottom edge of the collets.

Last night I managed to get the head in the house to have a good look round.

I’ve noticed that some of the valves have marks on them around 1 inch from the top. It looks as if they have been catching between the oil seal and valve guide?

The scratches are horizontal and not along the length of the valve.

It looks as if the valves haven’t been quite straight and have rubbed.

So do you guys think I could dress the valves and guides or is that impossible with the tolerances involved. Wasn’t really planning on spending a fortune on the head.

I do need some new oil seals... but can’t seem to get the old ones off!

Oh and one thing I did spot was on that first picture the valve has a slight flat on it. Both inlets have it. It’s not on the back sealing face just the bottom? Any ideas?

it would help if you read the post above yours Greg..... I reckon your kids are stopping you from sleeping and you're falling apart mate!

i reckon those marks are from rough use of valve spring compressor for installation or removal

never seen them on new stuff only on the valves in a 2cnd hand head i got from ebay

The head refurb is underway! Spring off, valves out and oil seals being changed.

Just thinking about rebuild and wondering do people use sealant when rebuilding the head?

Managed to get down the garage today.
Removed pretty much everything around the engine.

The top works are all looking OK but soon to be upgraded.

I having trouble getting the left side cover off? It seems free most of the way around apart from the front bottom end.?

Had to go back to the garage to check my sanity. I found this. Well I had seen it earlier but didn't think much off it. I think there's a bolt under it.

Hi Greg,

yes - there is a bolt under it (see attached picture).

Don't forget to remove the waterpump impeller before you try to get the left side cover off!

To seal the rockerarm cover I used Hylomar (that's what I had left over) - works fine so far - no leaks within the last 6 months.

Hmmm.....

i am working on a 2001 650 with an oil leak in the same position as the bodge-it on yours Greg (crack in the sidecover where the bolt head seats).
wonder if its a common weakness?

Well it's off! Luckily the bodge wasn't upto much. And now the cover is off. All looks pretty good inside.
