Ok, well nobody started a new thread dedicated to the 2009 Force Ride, so I figured I would.

I fully intend on making the trip, along with one or two others (pumpkin riders) from Michigan.

What sorts of accommodations are in the area?

The wife and I are coming for sure, hopefully on new Bergs, we shall see how good they really are, if they are great we will be offing the XCF's

i'd think that over, seth. that'll mean the elf hasta get all new gear$$$.

Okay gentlemen it looks like the decision has been made to go to Gunnison.

I would respectfully request that we keep all future posts regarding planning and execution of FR3 in this thread and not post in the other thread anymore.

Let the planning begin!!

Thanks,

Dale

out of curiosity dale, why would one bump a thread nine minutes after one posted it? ::?:

good question ned,

Wanted to make sure that kzoo's thread stayed the most current and on top of the list in that forum. Simple as that.

And through "magic" I have made the bump disappear!

Thanks for your question ;-).

Just want to throw some idea's and questions out here that will need to be worked out ahead of the much anticipated FR3.

Head count:

Keeping in mind that things come up, how many are committed to come at this point?

Lodging:

Are there RV parks in the area? Are there motels, cabins, and or a combination of both in the area? And, can we get a group rate?

http://www.mesarvresort.us/

http://www.koa.com/where/co/06116/facilities/

http://www.talltexancampgroundofgunnison.com/home

Meals:

What are the local restaurants?

Can we set up reservations with them in advance for our group and possibly get a discount there as well?

Do we want to have a local "outfitter" cater our meals for us, and perhaps make up sack lunches for each person to take with them on their ride?

Would they be willing to drive out to the country and prepare lunch for us at a mid day stopping point? Perhaps a couple of choices for lunch, and that could be decided the night before.

If we decide to use an "outfitter" what would the cost be per person for all the days?

Riding/Logistics:

Are we going to be able to ride out of our camp area, or will we have to trailer? Or will it be a combo?

If we are going to have to trailer bikes, do we want to rent a couple of flat bed trailers to haul the bikes and gas cans?

I am offering up my truck to pull one of the trailers, I have both a fifth wheel hitch, and a regular ball hitch set up, and my crew cab can haul 4 people comfortably in addition to myself.

I will also offer to arrive early and run down to the airport, or make the airport a stop on my way to pick up as many as possible that will be flying in from out of state or out of country. Yes Taffy, this includes you!!

I will also have at least one bike available for someone to ride that is coming in from out of town.

Are we going to have at a minimum two skill level or comfort level rides for each day? IE an "A" course, and a "B" course, led by a local who knows the area. Or perhaps we could do a road book thing?

Will we need any type of of out of state registration for non licensed plated bikes.

Will we need any type of permits for our group?

Will we need to do a fuel drop for the A or B rides?

All good thoughts, but let's not get too bogged down by lots of detail at this point. First things first is a place to stay and a general idea of headcount. From there, most other things will begin to fall into place.

One of our resident Colorado guys, preferably an area local needs to head up finding a camp/stage area. From there, we can begin with a headcount, and start planning some of the details you mention.

Fritz?

I'm in, btw.

i've just seen that 'commited' thing at the top. get rid of it straight away. i asked our great leader once (touring paris instead of getting on wiz der var!) and he said that yhe has no information at all as to who votes what so it means nowt and should be wiped out. i'll say now (as we all should) as i have before that i'm going to be there by hook or by crook.

Taffy,

I put the poll in at the top of the thread in response to JohnF3 comment that we need to get a head count and go from there. I agreed with him since that will be a determining factor in how much room we are going to need as a group.

While we cannot tell who voted, I believe that one can vote only once, and so was just trying help us get a grip on total number of folks coming. Glad to see that you're coming by hook or by crook!!

Ok, Ok, Taffy I'm here now. Keep yer knickers on. I apologize I had to go riding yesterday to blow out my fork seals and convince myself its time for new ones, seal savers and oh I don't know maybe some new springs and bushings. For the official tally I will RSVP for six (6) total and we will be R/v ing it. We're not really interested in the whole outfitting idea. Tom's breakfast burritos and a couple of power bars get us thru to dinner. We are definetly in for the Big Saturday Night Dinner and if we don't get Bob's chili Friday night we will revolt ! (We can pitch in some Elk for the chili Bobzilla) I will get some info on the whole out-of-state offroad sticker deal. I can't say enough about the joys of being plated. Had the BLM ranger saunter up to us yesterday. " How you guys doin ? wellyou can be on your way as soon as I see your stickers." The joy of stopping us from riding went right out of his face when he saw our "stickers" were on State of Colorado lic. plates. As with Moab my brother and I will be happy to lead and sweep "C" rides for the duration of the event. We are also planning on being there only slightly behing Buzzard but the beer will be cold when you arrive. I'll drop a call to Colby and get him to check in with additional info. Moab was great fun I'll help in any way I can. If anyone is coming from Socal or other points with an R/V we have lots of space here at the "Compound" with water and power if anyone wants to overnight here before pressing on to Gunnison.

From Trail source.com:

Road (FS755).
Note: Colorado residents must register their off-highway vehicle with the Colorado State Parks (303) 866-3437. Non-residents are not required to register in Colorado, iff they are registered in their home states. All off-highway vehicles must have an approved muffler and spark arrester. These requirements are subject to change so make sure to contact the Colorado State Parks prior to using your off-highway vehicle.
Important: before riding this trail area, make sure to contact the local land manager regarding current registration, equipment and gear requirements. Also, verify open/closure dates and times.

So this takes care of the "off road" licensing question. I'll make some phone calls and verify.

Thanks Ron,

So can you plan some "C" route rides for each of the 4 days or riding? Can you please include how many miles/hours you are thinking they will be and whether or not you will need a fuel stop? Will the bikes need to be plated on your rides? Trailering to trail head? Lunch stops along the way for those that might want more than a power bar for lunch, either bring your own or a stop in a small town that would love the business?

we've just got to get on with booking a site somewhere!

we're in the hands of a very few people and if they don't come up with a focused look at thee most important issue (at least equal to the rides ahs to be where we stay!) then things aren't on a good start.

if i lived there this would be sorted in one-hour.

lets go

I just phoned one of the sites that Dale had listed. "Tall Texan Campground". The peak season for them ends before we would be there. They would start taking reservations for cabins and RV spots after the first of next year. They are approximately 2 1/2 miles from town (GUNNISON). I don't know which trails we planned on riding, so the lady could not give me details on distances to trail heads etc... But she did say that if you're not road legal then you'd have to haul your bike to the trail head, so I figured it's more that 100'. She wasn't at her office so when she gets back she's going to email / mail me more information...

Great Job Kzoo!!

I had a good chat with Fritz this afternoon about the riding and accommodations, he had seen your post about the Tall Texan. Fritz said that he thought it was a great place, and he would be heading over there soon to check it out. He also thought there was a good restaurant either on the premises or right next door as well.

I spoke with him at length about the riding in the area, and the short version is, no worries we are going to have an awesome time as he has several rides in mind. He did say that non street licensed bikes will have to truck out of TT campground but, there should be no problem getting trailers etc to make this happen.

One ride he mentioned as a "possibility" was to ride from gunnison over to sileverton via oray or lake city for gas, and "perhaps" stay the night over there at a hotel. This was just a suggestion he made that I thought sounded like a lot of fun. Apparently this is part of the route used on the Colorado 500 and is a fantastic ride that is kind of must do if you're coming all the way there to ride.

Fritz said he has been scouting out routes and apparently had written a rather lengthy post with trail names and mileages but it got lost when he tried to post. He will be working on getting together a post of this nature so that everyone will have a better idea of what to expect. He also said that he had several friends that would be willing to help out as trail guides as well.

So, "perhaps" once we have more info on the TT place, and if we find that it suits our needs we can get set up with the group thing, and as Taffy informed me about the previous Moab ride it will be up to the individual members to call up what ever place get's selected and make their reservations.

Looks like the ball is rolling!!

Dale

Well if Fritz gives the ok for Tall Texan I'd say we call it the place. It will be another month and a half before we can make R/V site & cabin reservations, but that should give us a good head count if everyone chimes in here when they make the old RSVP. Once we get that, if people will give an indication of A, B, or C we should be rolling.
