nice one M

there's nothing like the buzz you get from starting a newly built engine

is it not customary for you to utter expletives and punch the air enthusiastically on a first start ?

or run around naked in the snow lighting firecrackers or something ?

:D :D

cheers

Well, I was receiving massive amounts of **** on my local forum because I was wrapping parts in foil so the plan was to get naked, wrap myself in foil and start the bike.......thankfully sanity prevailed at some point....

Thanks! To be honest, no.....it took me a good 10 minutes of kicking and pouring sweat before I realised that I have a completely dead battery in the bike....after I changed it....well you saw it yourself....

Dry weather testing.....

Just a little bit of oil got through the weep hole of the water pump....
Also, it got hot on one of log crossings (not on camera) and it spitted water on the rad overflow...not happy...seemed a bit too early....
Also, not happy with the suspension, want plusher....

Very, very powerful motorcycle.....must be 10% stronger than 2004 exc 450.....

Cheers!

NOW. the 450. I said it 6-7-8 years ago. THERE'S SOMETHING NOT RIGHT ABOUT THE 450. the compression is either way too high for the big end to cope or the ignition timing is wrong.

either way, far too many big ends go.

Taffy

Taffy is a problem you noticed in all the years of production?
Is it only in 2004? Or notoriously this year?
I ask because in 2005, they changed CDI unit and maybe it was related to the bad timing?

Hello all!

The bike is running good and almost everything is ok.
It starts first kick and I use the starter only for re-start when warm. I did more than 20 hours on it, wet weather, very wet weather and never had a problem starting BUT when I wash it with a pressure washer it won't start for some time - until it gets dry (?).

I got some grease for battery terminal protection and I'll stick it in the connectors to see if it helps.

Also, I managed to buy an aux tank from e-bay for silly 16 gbp...still waiting to receive it.

And I have a Sherco fan that I'll try to fit in. Has anyone managed to fit a fan to a pre 2005 model? Pics? Info?

It's going to be a very tight fit if I manage to mount it at all....

Cheers!

This is interesting, would like to read more about this topic.

Hi Makazica, - great thread - you really went to town on this re-build. Hope I can do the same. Either way will use this as a guide as well as the manuals as every tip helps. As I said earlier - if you don't know you don't know.

Re not starting after cleaning - unless I start it straight away after cleaning its a bugger 1st time. I think damp gets in the stator cover & or settles in the carb if allowed to sit after a clean.

I know Taffy always drills a small hole in the bottom of the stator casing to allow damp to drain.

Mine has Kokusan ignition, not SEM, so that shouldn't be a problem. I'm thinking wiring connectors....

Hi there.

I've noticed after a wash, if I remove the airfilter and look down into the air boot connecting the frame to the carburettor, there is usually a little bit of water in the elbow.

In my case, this was what was causing difficult starting after a wash.

So I would just stick a cloth in there to soak up the water, and I would drain the carburettor bowl, incase any water got in there.

For me, doing that sorted the problem right out.
