DHL Customs charge

thought i should put it up for shipito users, I know I put Davo onto them .. .beware of DHL

DHL tries regulary to charge people a fee of about $50 for "customs inspection fees" 3-4 weeks after you get the package. it has been going on for years.

what you need to do is check if the package has been opened or inspected when you get it.

if it has been (in aust) it will have an aqis sticker and or a stamp and some info inside your package.

usually it has not been inspected by aqis with DHL trying it on.

what you need to do is ask them to send a copy of the customs invoice and ask for the customs inspection number so you can ring aqis and check the details as to why it was inspected.

if you are under $1000 and there is no aqis sticker on your package they "won't be able to find it" and will waive the fee.

easy way around it is DONT USE DHL...

from one of the threads roughly what works
"If the invoice was not sent in error, could you please send me a copy of the AQUIS tariff advice, together with any legal documentation that confirms I am required by law to pay a tariff, even when the package has been delivered without notification of the existence (or cost) of tariffs for that package. In this instance, if I had been notified that tariffs applied, I would not have accepted the package.
As I understand it, the AQUIS tariff for out-office package inspection is $90 per $30 minutes. For a package this size, a fee of $47.30 just doesn’t add up!

Cheers and thanks"

I had a Shipito order back in July for US$1,282.95 (including Fedex US$153.88 shipping fee) and then had to pay Fedex an extra AU$227.67 to get it released from customs
I never could work out why it was so much but didn't worry too much as I think I saved well under half price by using www.ktm-parts.com and www.rockymountainatvmc.com and www.motocrossgiant.com

I had heard about Australian businesses complaining about people buying online overseas and not paying GST if under $1,000. I thought arrrrr they wont worry about pulling up my parcel, I will be lucky. :D
Then bang the phone call from Fedex for the AU$227.67 which I think included a AU$50 handling fee but even that didn't add up

Shipito and Fedex have been great and easy to deal with. So too Ktm Parts and Rocky Mountain ATV. Thanks for those tips Bushie, you're a champion.

Anyone out there shipped a whole bike back to Oz from US?
Or anyone had a bike stripped in US and sent back to Oz as parts to keep the invoice down?
mhambone's 6Fiddee looks attractive :)

yeah you gotta keep it under $1000

Bloke I know bought a rolling cr500 chassis of eBay in the US, put in boxes and sent, the total together with shipping was under $1000

but they put on $50 "handling" charge to get it to the port in the US

total value including shipping was then over $1000Au

customs pulled it and it ended up costing around $1600 all up and then he had to go to Perth (750Km) to pick it up 8O 8O

it was also a 3 month wait for the boat, if he had had it sent airfreight with the "appropriate paperwork" it would have arrived at his door in a week for less than that

he wasn't ripped off, just caughtby the system, all the charges were legitimate charges whereas the DHL 47.30 "customs" charge is just a load of crap if there is no aqis sticker,

very poor playing by DHL Please use USPS or even Fedex instead.

Happy Fathers day Davo!

Beware from DHL-FED EX-UPS for intercontinental shipping. Here in Greece they rip you if they open a packet for inspection too. Those companies have a different area in the airports and have their own rools. If you buy something from USA (around 200 $) you will probable pay 20 euros custom and 50 euros for storage  :bounce:
Its a good idea for using them inside your continent

Fed Ex have done the same to me twice.
Got a set of BST wheels ($3200)delivered by UPS from Netherlands no taxes
You win some you loose some.

Yes,but they are true robbers! We supose to pay some fee for storage...I have been in airport customs only 2 hours after the arival and the company charge 150 % more than the custom for 2  hours...of beadledom...I always choose to deal with national post companies, like USPS...In case that your item checked from them, charge nothing....

I found my invoice from Fedex:
I got stung here for a US$1,282.95 (including Fedex US$153.88 shipping fee) order for a bunch of stuff I brought in US :

CUSTOMS DUTY $46.29
IMPORT DEC N10 AIR CHARGE (GOODS VALUE > $1000) $40.20
WET $0.00
AQIS - ENTRY CHARGES AIR $15.00
GST ("ON IMPORTATIONS") $126.18
TOTAL $227.67

Yes Bushie I learnt my lesson, definately keep it under $1,000.
sotosberg, I couldn't use USPS as the box was too big.
