Broken Valve Spring 05 FS650E

Well after 7000 miles and 280 engine hours of good yeehaw fun it finally happened.

I have a broken exhaust valve spring. Wasn't riding it hard, just fun as usual and then the motor quietly went dead. No nasty noises or grinding sounds. Opened up the motor and found it was a broken exhaust valve spring. No visible signs the valve made any contact with the piston. No nasty bits in the oil. It looks good for a rebuild.

I could just replace the broken valve spring and be on my way but Husa-logic says no. With this kind of mileage on what's basically a race motor it's time to bite the cash bullet and refresh some other important motor bits.

4 new valve springs.
4 new valve seals.
1 new updated 07 counter-balancer.
2 new main bearings.
1 new piston & rings. Gonna check the original piston for wear and maybe save it for backup.
1 new piston barrel. Gonna check the original piston barrel for wear and maybe have it re-nicklasiled for backup.
Some mild porting and polishing of the head.

Anyone think it's necessary to replace the used valves with new ones? The intake valves are clean and there's some black carbon buildup on the exhaust valves. I was thinking of maybe just replacing exhaust valves as they take the brunt of wear and tear with the high heat.

Kind of bummed but hey these things happen. I'm just happy the problem was something minor and the motor is otherwise basically fine. I've heard of a couple other 05 FS650E's snapping an exhaust valve spring on occasion. In the meantime I have to make do riding an 04 CBR1000RR around town. It might sound funny but the RR feels kind of boring and plush by comparison as it's basically first and second gear all of the time. Almost like the difference between driving a BMW V12 versus a Mini-Cooper turbo around town.

well done ... 280 hrs gotta be happy with that .

i would replace all 4 valves , the rockers , cam chain and fit a new con rod kit .
