Went ice racing today

Never used them but I plan on getting a set as soon as I can. Just for winter woods riding. Not for the ice tracks. Fryguy uses them and said good things. Maybe we can get him to give us a report? I think there may already be a thread on them from him?

Just thinking...which makes the best ice racing bike?A AMA short track bike like a Rotax 505 or a mx bike fitted with a Pascal Picotte neck.Anyone have a educated answer......thanks

I was watching speed vision last night and they were showing a AMA short track event and I found it interesting to note that they all seemed to be riding MX bikes....CRFs etc. I was pretty sure that Chris Carr was on a KTM which I found shocking. I don't follow those types events close enough to know what the current trends are. That is Dale Lineweaver land.

I have only ever seen a couple of dirt track style machines being used in ice racing in the Ontario and Alberta/BC. I can't speak for Quebec. It was all 250 and 500 2 smokes until a few years ago. Was the Berg ice bike that Lineweaver built in a dirt track chassis?

I think that there are real advantages to MX suspension on the ice because the tracks get chewed up so bad and the corners get really rough. The studs chew deep trenches. I'm not sure that the dirt tracks get that rough but maybe I am wrong. I would tend to change lines as the heats went by, square up the corners and skim across the top of the choppy ice berms in the main line.

Don't they run speedway and dirt track bikes on the ice in Europe?

Berg that I tried and built by Lineaweaver (Pascal Picotte) was with stock frame. 25 years ago, there was only dirt track bike on the ice (speak for quebec, canada). A guy named Marcel Fournier came with a motocross with tire that he made. Everybody laugh. He won, by far everything. It is also him who came with the first neck.

Very crude looking "neck" on Mark Holiday's CR500. It may look sketchy but the guy would win the Pro class in Ontario on a regular basis with this set up. I found the extension gave me more confidence and I could push harder in the corners.

Good stuff Coffin.

I got out for a spin yesterday. It's hard to believe I was ice racing last weekend and this weekend I was sweating in +13°c.

Most of the trails were ok but some sections were covered in snow.
