UK September 24/25 weekend ride in Brecons

well that's about three times you've pledged that Adam and I'm starting to believe you!

I think Paul on the Saturday and Brian on the Sunday took some photos so maybe we'll have a link for you but we didn't ride and have an 'Ed' in our team. Ed can lead, tell you exactly where we're going, open the gate, take a photo and close the gate....and....still be at the front leading the group.....and...he opens gates without dismounting.....and....

Glad the ride went ahead and you lads had a great time sorry I missed it having to work both days.

There are some fantastic lanes down there with 3 of the best been under threat of closure from NERC.

Sarn Helen, The Gap and Brown Trousers (Gwydre Fawr) are all dual status that is restricted byway and UCR's.
The Nerc act says that they should become restricted byways and stop having vehicle rights unless it can be proved otherwise. Last year the Brecon National Park pushed the police to prosecute riders who were on Sarn Helen.
2 riders paid up the £30 (?) but a few others were TRF members and refused the fixed penalty fine maintaining their right to use the road. They were backed by the TRF Earlier this year the CPS decided not to proceed with the case.
This still leaves the true status of these 3 lanes as unclear but if you are willing to take the chance and risk an unlikely prosecution as a TRF member you can expect full backing. I know many trail riders seem to have a problem with the TRF but it has and does do some fantastic work behind the scenes.

Brown Trousers is definitely in my top ten favourite lane and very close to being no1. I think it is only this mishap to keeps it out of the top spot. When the bike stalled and my foot went down to maintain balance there was nothing there  I did bounce :bounce: and yes the air box did fill with oil, just glad I was riding and not following it afterwards.

So - brilliant weekend - thanks to all who helped me out - took the rides etc etc.
Shame the only weekend we could sort clashed with FR4 but ho hum - looks like they all had a great time.
Fantastic place - wild ponies roaming around the camp site - great weather for Wales in Autumn. Rocks loose & a bit slippery
Hopefully Mark will link up some better photos as I was spending too long upside down & catching up to take many - really...

Breathtaking views - my excuse for puffing & panting.

Day one - after falling on these rocks - then mastering them only to fall on the easier ones just above I decided to throw the towel in. The others seemed right on it & I had people to see so I left them too it which was probably for the best as it sounds like they really went for it.

Next day only the four of us remained & the others were happy to assist & wait. I learnt a lot & completed everything I started (eventually). This is of interest for the future as you really need a big group which can split into expert & novice rides or a small group where all mates together can muck along.

Taffy lost for words - mark this date.

Mark having a quiet ***.

well the stunning view down the valley shows a road on the top left of photo and that eventually comes round to where you took the photo James and the view ahead is to the place that gave the route it's name: the gap!

I thought the rarer shot was of Mark speaking not me being quiet!

give me a link to any photos when you get them James please?

Ok , I know this is the wrong place & I'll move this to a relevant thread later but the question was asked of me during the ride & the inquisitors were shocked that I didn't know the answer...I'm running 14 front & 50 back sprocket. I guess that's why I'm having trouble in part with steep 1st gear downhills ??? what are you all running.

I'm running 12/52 but thinking about trying 13/52,
If i was you i would try 13/52. i think you would notice a great improvement, your bike did seem to high geared in the rocky section
Give it a try see how you get on. Great ride other weekend really enjoyed it, hope you will come up again sometime,

I could be wrong James but Marks internal gearing on the LDC is different to yours OK? they need a 12/52 whereas your beast wants a 13/52 as said. and if you have been running 14/50 well.... it really has been a major part of your problem!

you saw what happened to ******, he was waaayyyy overgeared. well your gearing (relative to a 2002) is halfway to that.

we've so much to see and so little time to see it in! the cambridge branch of the TRF are in the Isle of Man this weekend. I gave them all my marked out maps. I'm sure they'll rave about it. I really wish I could persuade you boys that the extra expense of the boat trip is worth it and go over during the Manx two-day trial and the manxgp.

If Carling did green laning holidays.....

get all the bikes in one van and all the clobber on top with three blokes across the front. get about 6 bikes in a big van, eight even and let the other 5 fly out as it is so cheap. rent a house for 5 days....... get everyone in.

heaven!
