Uh, oh! Shiny brass looking squares on filters

2008 FE650 with about 160 hours, mostly ridden ripping through city.

Did my oil change and filter cleaning (Scotts metal filter) and found tiny shiny squares that looked brass in color not chrome. Maybe I'm color blind but they did not look chrome to me.

I did a search and found the thread about the shiny chrome squares and that it indicated rocker arm bearings.

Informed opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I've ridden the bike almost daily since picking it up and doing a cross country type ride.

Using Shell 5w40 rotella full syn and Mobil 1 5w40 full syn diesel.

Changing it every 3 weeks depending on how much I ride. A day could be 15 minute rides running between cars to get to a destination or a few hours broken up in sections of stopping in to different friend's restaurants to warm up. Below 20F about 30 minutes before key fingers lose feeling, depending on speed and how long high speed is maintained.

Not bouncing of the rev limiter. Does get over revved sometimes when a gear is missed.

I think that is more then enough info, or too much.

Informed opinions are greatly appreciated.

I am seeing having to do a 4 hour drive to drop this baby off for new bearings, partial rebuild, etc, drive back and waiting. Then coming back with half a stack of Ducati cash to pay for fix. Yes, unpleasant... but the pleasure this long legged Swede is giving me I'm sure has a high price.

Thank you.

search "bronze flakes"

tiny bushing inside the clutch shaft for the clutch pushrod to run in

Thank you Bushie for the direction in my search for information.

Berger, the tiny pieces do not seem to be magnetic because I only found them on both filters. The magnet had a about half a dozen, skinny long pieces which I have seen previously. I don't think I need to worry about the long skinny pieces unless I get a big clump but you guys know better.

I will try to search Bushie recommendation and see what comes up.

Like I said, I see big dollars because I have been having big fun. Enjoyment and priced paid for it seem to usually be equal.

Thank you gentlemen.

Bushie,

It sounds to me that my problem is like the one you had and not an urgent fit.

It is wear that will cause deterioration of bearings and other such items where the tiny chips can lodge.

If not rectified the slivers will become chip and cause more wear.

Could you guesstimate the time it took you to rectify the situation and it's level of difficulty.

I am paranoid of any funny sound or debris in the oil. The long slivers I've seen before in both this bike and my Ducati so it is easier to convince myself that they are just normal wear and not serious.

I do my best to avoid highway time but if I have to make a run out to the 'burbs I aim for 70 mph and keep it under 80 mph. I did not buy this bike to tear up the highways because that is not what it was made for and the engine will be destroyed trying to use it like a sportbike, pushing triple digits and revving the bejesus out of it.

Is the right attitude to have with my long legged Swede? Quick blasts through town, urban adventures, and dirt?

Thank you for your opinions.

Cheers!

well it can only really wear when the clutch is engaged

the problem is the bits go through the gearbox input shaft bearing and can potentially get stuck on the shift fork sliders

to fix is about 30 min max if you have the new bushing I don't know the # PN

check that the end of the pushrod is square.

the main problem is casued by the end of the rod not being properly squared off.

Bushie,

Thanks for the specifics. That is exactly what I need, details.

I hope I can square it away quickly.

Cheers!
