Thinking of buying FE400, good/bad? things to look for?

I've seen a 2001 FE400 locally which I'm thinking of buying to satisfy my SM curiosity. Is this a good or bad first SM? My riding experience is road bikes, currently 900 Superlight duke and Bimota YB11. I've never really ridden off road, the 400 would be a road bike only initially, although I wouldn't mind doing some green laning or blasting around the forests. What sort of money is the bike worth? 2500kms on the clock but could well have been raced in the past, has road rims on it, condition wise looks used but clean and tidy. Motor started first kick from cold and sounded ok. Any issues with MOTs? It has the Husaberg exhaust but it's not BS or E marked. Didn't sound too noisey tho.

Is there a classifieds section on here BTW?

any advice appreciated!

i would say that if you re serious about doing some trail riding then it would be the best one to start wit,. if yor after a back lane tarmac burning would suggest one of the larger engines.
which ever you get make sure its set up by someone who knows husabergs and you'll have no probs.
mine flew thru the mot with no probs as for value bergs tend to be slightly cheaper cos of there undeserved rep, may be wrong but i would not pay over £1800 - £2000 for a 01 400 with supermoto wheels

my 03 fe400e is coming up for sale as i'm off travelling in a few weeks but although the perfect greenlane and enduro tool i found the tuned 550 crosser i had the ultimate on the road! i'll be wanting about 1900 for mine if you're interested. ta, Jared

this it?

i'd say £1300 for an '01. i would never use it for SM and not great for being silly on the roads. however as a commuter it would be fine.

race a 450, 550 or the 650 - if you have the balls!!!!

the standard pipes ARE NOT kitemarked.

nobody (virtually) tries to mix off-road with on road let alone SM as well.

i would get it as a 400 and get a 100mm barrel and piston for it as a basic start. then i would look for BV heads (all models bar the 400 get this) and a 53/55 cam or a lineaweaver cam.

the bikes up to '04 needed so much work that if you can go to '04 you should.

Thanks guys for your response. No this is it Taffy. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... %3AIT&rd=1

It sounded good, I asked for it to be cold when I viewed and it seemed to start ok. Condition wise not mint but that used but clean and maintained look. There's nothing with it at that price and it will need an MOT. The fact that the std pipes aren't kitmarked is this a problem for MOTs? The guy has a titanium exhaust/ pipe and off road wheels too, what would these be worth? It is a 450 apparently, has the bore and stroke on the engine case. Supposedly it's not been raced but you never really know do you! It's described as race tuned but what that really means I don't know. To some people a K&N airfilter means it's 'race tuned'! I've seen a couple of WR426s too for about 2k or just above, they've come well recommended too.

Nope Thats A 400,Its The Old Engine. For A Y2K Bike Its A Little Pricey I Think,The Enduro Wheels Will Be Worth Around £200-£300ish So You Could Off-Set That Against The Cost Of Buying It In The First Place. Dont Know much About These Bikes Really. You Need To Find A Tester Thats A Little "Deaf" When It Comes To An MOT,If You Get Some Jobsworth Then You Could Be In For Grief While A Motard Friendly Guy Would Probably Pass It Ok.
