Hi there everyone,

It's no secret to the regular visitors that the site software has been having some serious issues as of late. The situation is that the scripts that run the site have not been officially supported for a very long time. As I update the server applications, more breaks as the scripts are no longer compatible with these server updates.

For the last few months, I've been testing various systems (vBulletin, phpBB3, Drupal, etc.) and exporting the forum data to them to ensure that we don't lose any forum data. The good news is that I have successfully exported the data to all of the major forum systems. The bad news(there's always bad news much like there's always a bit of peanut butter that you can't get out of the jar) is that many of these systems don't support the ancillary content that we've become accustomed to: weblinks, downloads, etc.

Here's where you come in. I'd like to hear your opinions on how important this content is. Before you chime in, let me add:

The gallery and wiki(doc) would be unaffected. The wiki is independent of our community system and I'm almost positive I can adapt the gallery to whatever system system we end up using in the future. News, links, downloads and classifieds would go the way of the dodo bird however. To make it easier to wrap your head around it, the site would turn into a "forum" like KTM Talk and would no longer be a "portal". It's sole existence would be for discussion.

Please let me know what you think, both with the poll and with a post, if have anything to say.

Thanks a bunch for your time and as always, no decisions will be made without letting you know first.

thanks,
json

Howdy Json!

And first off, as a relative newbie to Husaberg.org, let me say ...
thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthank
youthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthank
youthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthank
youthankyouthankyouthankyou ..

...for all of your hard work!! Any reality-based, carbon unit is (or should be) aware of just how much effort, sweat, tears, and money it takes to run a web site ... especially one as solid as this one. So major props right off of the bat, eh!

That being said, all things need to evolve or die, and web sites and forums are no different. So best of luck on your upcoming decisions and changes. And remember, you can't please everyone. Just shoot for the 80% mark and call yourself lucky. :^)

I am a *long-time* dirtbiker and KTM rider and have only recently become a Hooseyburger lover (just got a 2010 Husabgerg FE 390).
For me, the primary value of a forum is in the user discussions and threads about maintaining, troubleshooting, racing, riding, Trip Reports, etc ...that is, the bikes. So I don't have a big vote/feeling about maintain the extra content as I am not real familiar with it.

But it seems like you could handle the Classifieds in Forum section like other sites do ... and news and links could be handled in a "General Discussion" area with "sticky links." That way, you could at least pop over to the news sites easily.

While I am not advocating becoming a "blue and yellow" version of KTMTalk.com ... it is one of the best arranged and run sites that I have come across. You might look at how they handle extra content material.

And for the die-hard UHE fanatics that are going to flame my heretic butt... no worries, eh! (grin)
Remember, it's not the forum engine or layout that makes a forum tick -- it's the peeps, history, tone, and coverage that make it worthwhile.

Which is why I belong to both KTMTalk and Husaberg.org -- they both bring different things and angles to the table.

Best of luck, json! Sincerely, E-Ticket

P.S. Why the heck can't I get my signature updated! (LOL)

Try this link for your sig and see if that doesn't get you updated :)
Have tried that one several times ... but this time it finally worked.... woo-hoo!
Thanks, boss! E-Ticket

The only thing I would like to see available are the downloads to help support the older generations.

I will offer up putting all the downloads on my own storage device and can email them to anyone who wants such information.

The same would be true of the links I suppose

The good news is that a lot of the older down loads were available on the .com site so there won't be the copy right issues that KTM talk has had.

I think having some sort of classified section would be advantageous in some form, even it is just like a forum.

I know you have been like Scotty trying to keep things patched up for a long time and your efforts are greatly appreciated.

The good news is that I'm assuming that the new system would be much more flexible and reliable. Please let us know if we need to have some sort of a pledge drive to acquire any funding that might be necessary for this undertaking.

I don't fully understand how it all works, is there a possibility we could lose data/threads/posts from moving/updating to new platform?

would hate to see that happen

Hi there bowser, sorry if it got lost in translation:

I've made sure that I can salvage all forum content(users, threads, posts, attachments, etc.) What I'm wondering is how important all of the fluff on the site is to users. I've begun to suspect recently that it's not very important after looking at visitor trends on the site. This post is my attempt to find out :)

thanks,
json

I would say that the info regarding the late model 09/10 model bikes isn't that important as it can be found just about anywhere on the net forums these days. But the info for the older models i would say would be very important as i don't think it would be listed near as frequently on other forums.

improvements are needed to this site and if it's easier to move to a new platform like ktmtalk then lets do it.

Json,
i do use some of the "fluff" ,but that being said I vote to do whatever makes your life (do you have one ?) ( I thought the UHE was your reason for existing) easiest. You're a good egg and I'm sure you are making at least $.034567 per hour keeping this site running. Do what is best for you Dale can figure out the rest !

I think Jason, as this site and its community have evolved, you have to to the same...mostly to preserve yourself, as without you, we wouldn't have a home. Do whatever works best for you. Fluff...we'll soon forget it was there I suppose, and personally, I prefer the classifieds on a thread basis anyway.

Hope all is well

cheers

Without your huge efforts, json, over the years we would not have the fantastic forum that UHE has evolved into. For me, the downloads I want, I have, and I hardly ever look at anything other than the forum(s) and gallery(s).

Do what makes life easiest for you, and we'll cope.

Thanks for all you do,
Steve

First, hanks for all that you do in keeping this thing up and running behind the scenes!

I'm new to UHE and a newb to owning a Husaberg. Like others I came to forum to primairly learn from others and discuss related topics.

If we lost the classifieds I'd live but would be great to find a way to keep it.

At the end of the day its tough to be everything to everybody. So, gather your input and make the best decision.

Thanks again...

sounds like going forwards is the best way. i will miss the downloads but not the news and such stuff. thanks again for all your hard work json.

Hey Json!

I agree with the masses. Evolution is inevitable, it seems. I would assume this effort would make your life hugely easier, and potentially allow you to offload the technical stuff on those that know current systems (akin to trying to find a mechanic who still knows how to tune a 4 barrel carb, you're that mechanic!)

It seems you will salvage the important stuff anyway. Regarding the downloads, can't they simply be attached to posts in a sticky specifically for downloads in the same manner that a picture can be attached???

How's about the archives we've (I'VE) been pining for before that last crash (like 5 years ago)? Is there a possibility that those will be resurrected too??

I think we can deal with the loss of that last bit of peanut butter. Wait, can't we just find a dog to lick that last bit out so it's not wasted???

-Parsko

PS - Please let me know if we need to take care of that other thing because of this, I think you know what I'm talking about. I guess it won't matter, though.

fluff? if you guys hadn't brought it up, i wouldn't have known it was there. :backinmyday:
DO IT. we will adjust.

I would hate to see the Web Links and Downloads go away, and not just because I update the Web Links (well maybe)

I try to add new vendors to the links as they get mentioned in posts. Without the Web Links you would have to rely solely upon the membership to answer you directly if you needed to know where to obtain Dellorto parts or possibly a Wossner piston in the U.S.
I can't always remember all of the suppliers and oftentimes refer back to the Links prior to attempting to answer a query.

As far as the downloads go, where else can you get a 1999 workshop manual as it is no longer listed on the official site? What if you need a PDF manual so that you can rebuild your *********** 50mm Extreme forks? Try to find one. And on and on.

Of course this will mostly affect the older models of which I am some what fond of.

We have so much good stuff here it would be a shame for it to just disappear into the ether.

whilst i like the look of the site and do pop into the various little extras for a browse i'm very much do what is best for the site. if they have to go then so be it.

only thing i haven't agreed with is bowsers comment about being able to find alot of the 09 / 10 stuff at other places. if its all here there's need to go anywhere else.

there has been some concern about loosing some of the down loads. if they have to go i would suggest a few weeks warning so that anyone who wants to do some downloading has a bit of time to do so.

i for one would probably download all i could so, i'm sure others would as well, so that its not lost to us permanently.

Hi there guys and thanks very much for your thoughts and input.

To clarify, I haven't decided to dump any content. I truly was curious how important this content was to others. I've spent years moving it from one system to the next and it suddenly struck me that I might be doing it for an audience that no longer existed. I hate the thought of losing anything, really but I don't want to keep it at the expense of porting the site to another half-assed system. Time, however is on my side as the site is currently operating and I'm not trying to recuperate from the latest catastrophe. I just didn't want to invest a bunch of time in something that was considered unneeded by the community.

This weeks test involves bridging two systems (in this case, Joomla and phpBB3). Installation is finished and data is ported. I've not yet started looking at the data structure for the additional content. I'll do that if I find the synchronization between the two systems to meet our needs.

It's a ridiculously slow process due to having to start with a fresh database port each time. The size of the database makes it quite nasty to move around. Once I find the system that works and I figure out all the changes that need to be made, I'll need to do it one final time for the real conversion so we don't lose any of the latest users, posts or other changes to the site.

All this is to say that I won't be surprising you in the next few days with a new site. You've got some time to make your voice heard :)

thanks,
json

Thanks for all of your hard work Jason !

In the event that we do at some point in the future lose the Web Links and downloads an alternative to help bridge the gap could be an area where members could store pdf's and the like.

I'm really gonna miss the galleries too................ouch :buzzsaw:
