swing arm pivot pin

as i've said before through other posts the SAPP is undersized on the husey. this sends the dowels over at an angle and means that the needle rollers only ever touch in a small area which wears them out in no time.

don't believe me?

undo the nut and loosen, then grab the rear wheel and feel the movement left to right which might be as much as 8-10mm. this is crazy!

the dowels wear into the frame and the engine case and then the nut gets tightened on the end of the pin and crushes the frame on the swing arm itself.

secondly, the pin is also loose and undersize through the frame!

the solution for:

a) taking the slack out of the pin in the frame
b) the looseness in the dowel to SAPP is to have a

LARGER O/D pin made!

i have and it's .018" larger which is .45mm larger. that is massive in engineering terms! combined with new dowels and needle rollers i hope to have cured the problem. i also now oil the NRs instead of greasing them. you don't want the needles to skid. again, sitting straight will help. i have had no water ingression in a season.

if you haven't done this and you ride SM-don't ask me any more questions! it's a must!

Taffy,

What models and years does this apply to? You got my attention with this post.

Taffy

and Coffin for that matter

I dont' know about 04s since I've never maintained one, but 05s and 06s ahve very tight axle tolerances.

Upgrade Taffy and then you can through half of the doc away. The factory lishtened to you and modded the bikes on your reccomendation.

Your skin must be getting thick for the ribbn your getting!!!!!!

hi fry

gary grover our biggest dealer in the uk has measured the newer pins with a vernier and tells me there is no difference!

my pin IS from an '04.

are you sure this factory ride doesn't include you being brain washed?

if i thought i understood you, understood WTF you were saying i might get offended! luckily for me, i don't understand... canadians = huh!

I have noticed the same thing and the only way to take the slack out is to tighten the nut until it pinches the frame. I can tell if the mount is any bit loose. Another thing is the frame area near the pivot point might not be as strong as it should be. Since I don`t race it would not be much of a problem but for those who do it would be worth checking into. Don`t want a flexy flyer do you?

thanks wildbill!

you've found out what many owners do. i believe that all SMs (should be) are strengthened in the area you're on about, around the SAPP.

we SHOULD only have to look to 'our' SM brethren for leadership in many quarters here at UHE but alas most of them either bench race or are busy fitting carbon look alike...
