Starting problems

Hello, I´m sorry for my bad english, I´m from Estonia.

Just bought myself 1998 fe600, but the problem is that the bike starts a little bit bad, when the engine is warm (have to kick the kicker sometimes over ten or eaven more times before the engine starts). Just adjusted the valves, but nothing really changed. When engine is cold, bike starts normally. There is a big gun exhaust installed too and one guy told me that there may be a problem in the carburettor (original settings). Carburettor is delorto. What do you think, where may the problem be?

All the best

welcome Labe

can't say we have many estonians here so good to have you aboard. first of all the carbs wear out over the years and i suggest you order new internals for the carb. the needle and the atomiser/emulsion tube. they wear badly as can the slide.

it might be worth taking the risk and modifying the carb the way it's been set in our carburettor section of the doc. the 600 will be very similar to the two 501s that are set up there by heimar and joeusa.

the second problem is old plugs and plug caps.

the third is that the ignition (SEM) can start to fail. you should use a multimeter to get the correct stats.

others are:
old fuel
camcxhain wear ruins the valve timing
worn piston and rings
guide seals
your kicking technique might not be good yet!

IMO your bike is a little rich because the carb is worn.

I thought that the fuel mixture was rich too, becouse the exhaust is like "banging" too and sometimes you can see the flame comeing out from the back. So I`ll think that I´m going to try to renovate my carb and see what´s going to happen.

you can start by seeing if you can reduce the fuel delivery via the fuel screw.

Hey, got that problem figured out a long time ago, one little hose from carb had touched against exhaust, and was melted. Just cuted the hose shorter and problems were gone. But today my bike decided not to start at all, I kicked almost half hour and only 2 times it started for two or three seconds and then died. Exhaust some times "banged" when kicked. And for a little time I managed to get my bike running, but I had to hold quite high rpm and so it did also worked properly. Yesterday I noticed some "holes" when accelerating, but today it didnt start any more, tryed even pulling it by the car like 500-700 meters, some times it like promissed for a second and some times exhaust banged, but for resoult nothing again.

Help me guys, removed the candle, had a spark, also could smell the gas when kicking.

strip the carb and clean out all the jets and holes also remove the back plate where the air filter rubber fits onto the carb and blow compressed air down the two holes and all the holes were you removed the jets from and then try it dont remove the mixture screw or idle screw without wrighting down how many turns in they are or you will lose the origenal settings it ran at before it stoped working.from what you have described its a blocked jet somewear they all pop at the exhaust

Could it be the "final part of ignition before the candle wire" (dont know the word in english), like I was told? One friend mentioned the valves too, but thats the thing that I dont belive (20h ago adjusted)

Ill try striping the carb tomorrow. Let you know if it helped.

Thank you,
Labe

try doingyr tappets again.

also i think yourignition may be about to go!

in the doc we have some figures for thelater bikes (2001+) but srks has also left details in the past abotwhat an early 600 needs. i suggest you go to 'forums'and then 'electrical' and then stat searching.

get some figres for testing but i think it's your EM.

regards

Taffy
