Starter confusion

Ok I've been researching the optional Honda cbr 600/yam r6 starter threads and they all refer to redrilling, adding spacers or longer or shorter bolts etc. All these options don't seem to apply to my bike as the mounting bracket on my starter is at a right angle to the starter instead of the options pictured on ebay or even the "beefy starter" pictured on Taffy's website. Can I just reuse the mounting bracket from my original starter on one of these starters ? Has anyone tried this ? My bike is a 2000 fe600e.

The starters you are referring to do not fit your bike. They are intended for 2001-2008 models. Post some pics of your bike and we will confirm the year.

The reason you may be confused is that the 2000 model uses the first generation motor and the second generation frame and plastics. A very cool bike indeed.

The 95 - 2000 starters are Denso's and the 2001-2008 are Mitsuba's.

The Denso unit is quite big and heavy, spins not so fast but is very powerful.

I ordered the same starter I showed you in your other thread. It arrived today. It appears to be correct but I will not be able to say for sure until I mount it. To date no one has found a suitable replacement starter for the first generation motor that I know off. Husaberg wants $650.00. This was under $100.00.

Why do you think that you need a new starter?

Most of the e-starting issues center around the 01-03 models. Husaberg really screwed up the first few years of the second generation motor. So bad they called the starter a restarter and it wouldn't even do that very good.

The 95-2000 models rarely had an e-starting problem. Even with the 600's.

Oh ok that answers my question Husabutt. I just clicked on that starter u sent in reply to my previous post, the one from Amazon that looks like it would work just use the mounting bracket from the original starter I'm going to order one too ! My starter quit working I took it apart and it was full of oil ,sprague brg fried as well as armature where brushes ride. Got new valves from KTM in Ramona (2 intake and 2 exhaust plus new valve seals) plus carb gasket kit. I ordered new 94.96mm wossner piston kit and I should be all set except I need a new head gasket-discontinued any sources for that ? BTW I live in Esco as well...thanks

is there an authority on starter motors and windings there in the USA? you could show the windings to someone and they can decide if there was a faster starter you could get?

I'd really love to help - if only we knew an expert? a listing of starter speeds and strengths etc.

just to to let you know, if the "weave" is more inline with the line of the starter then it gets quicker but has less torque. fact is, we can get these old girls decomping beautifully nowadays but we can't get the speed into the starter.

I also have a 2000 starter here laying open and would gladly deal with a 'starter motor expert' if you can find someone?

being a business, I may get better answers BTW if you let me know?

I know an elect shop close by Taff but I'm hoping these BMW Bombardier 650 starters from EMS global direct for less than $100 brand new that Husabutt and I ordered will work for our 1rst gen motors and that you will have all the issues with the 2nd gen motors figured out and updated fixes posted by the time I upgrade to a 650...ha
From what I've read on this site so for I want a late model husa 650 soon though while they're still out there in good shape

Ok what's the best (and lightest possible) piston to get for my bike and keep the stock 11.2:1 comp ?

I need to find someone on the internet who 'knows their s**t) so help me troops.....

as for hoping! I mean "HOPING". come on please..... don't we have a higher intellect here than just hoping, don't we have the ability to research these things?

Darwin might have called this a race to the bottom?

I did a quick bolt up on a 98 parts bike and its a perfect fit. I wasn't able to actually see how well it spins the motor up but it is identical to the original one. In the near future I will take some pictures and start a new post so that it will be easy for others to search and find the info.

Hey Husabutt does your original starter look like mine or does your bike use an L shaped
bracket to mount it to the engine ?

Your 2000 starter is part # H25024001 $767.27

My 1997 is part #H25012101 $594.20

Instead of using a bracket to mount the starter to the frame it looks like Husaberg cut a billet bracket that replaces the end cap of the starter on yours. Looks like you will need to install your starter bracket / end cap onto the new starter. Other than that the starter appears identical.

Your frame being the second generation with the first generation engine sort of explains the reason for the differences.

It would be great if you could take some pics when you do the change over as this has never been done before.

Ok update on my Amazon starter. used the original end housing from my old starter bolted right up but then I noticed it had .050in play while pulling the drive end gear in and out, put the end housing from the new starter back on and it was about .030in so I used both shims from my oil starter along with the two that came in the new starter and got it to .040 so went to local starter and alt shop here to get more shims or advice and to inquire about modding the later model Mitsuba starters for more speed/less torque but the owner lady told me to toss off they don't sell parts and when I asked to speak to a tech she said they don't have any so finally a dude with a blue uniform work shirt on came out from behind all the shelves of rebuilt starters and alternators and just told me I need more shims didn't offer any and didn't know what the spec for it was so maybe they don't have any techs. Needless to say I didn't bother to ask about modding the Mitsuba starter and got out of there. North County Rebuilders on Hale here in Escondido. Found a shim in my garage and got the play down to .030. Should work fine will confirm when I get top end back together. I might try Ricky Stator downtown here in SD to pursue Mitsuba options

CYCLEWAREABLES

these are the people to speak to I reckon!

we should be prepared to go to a Mitsuba and get the end cap to suit if that is what is recommended?

I have written to them but they are famous for never replying to emails.

after all if they see you'r in the UK they aren't going to go the extra mile.....

perhaps you boys could ask them?
