Speedo Problems

Hi,

Basically my speedo isn't registering that the wheel is moving. It still turns on and everything works as normal except the speed (and miles obviously). It will stay off while I'm riding so its getting no signal from the wheel what so ever.

It all started after I washed it (only washed the bottom half of the bike really but some water could of got behind the clocks).

I've checked that the cable is into the brake caliper properly and the pickup is adjusted properly and it all seems good. I tried spraying some WD-40 into the 3 connector blocks that go into the clocks earlier as well but with no luck.

Any other ideas?

Bike is a 2004 FS450e.

Thanks, Carl

Next thing to check is that the reed switch is working as the magnet passes by. You can use a test light or a multimeter, which is easier. Open up the connector from the front wheel where there should be 2 wires. As the magnet passes the switch the circuit should close and your test light comes on or multimeter indicates a low, almost zero resistance instead of an open circuit.

On other bikes I have had the conductors fatigue and break inside the insulation over the headlight where they do a lot of bending as the suspension works. The bottom s OK and the top is too, but the cable in the middle isn't.

Does tend to sound like water in a connection though. Good reason to pack all electrical connectors with dielectric grease. Lanolin and silicone based products are good. Preventative maintenance!

Tried that today and it wasn't working so inspected the wire and it had broken at the bottom where it had been twisted by the bloke that had it before me. I'll order one tomorrow morning.

Thanks, Carl

As an aside, for anyone else reading this thread, you can test the speedo by getting a jumper wire and 'making and breaking' a connection across the wheel sensor input to the speedo. That will also tell you whether its the speedo, or reed switch/sensor that is the problem.
