out of nowhere my rear disc is wearing rapidly and the pads are falling off! i lost the LHRB use again today and i realise now it's coz the resevior empyies and self bleeds air.

the disc is wearing away rapidly? does this mean that some kind of hardening is gone?

regards

I'm not aware of any hardening on the discs. It sounds like your rear brake is dragging perhaps causing excess heat and thus excess wear.
Did you discover where the brake fluid is going? Maybe a cracked or cut brake line? If you haven't already make sure that the bleeder is tight.

Maybe someone is out to get you Taffy 8O !!

IMHO it sounds like your pads are well worn and literally to bare metal, hence your resovoir will be empty until you push the piston back in to accommodate your new pads.
But then again, you know this and would not make that silly mistake.
I just wanted to answer your post, as you answer so many other peoples.

Sorry i can't be more help.

i had a similar problem on my KTM rear disc. supposedly, the hardening only covers the outer surface. that is why they will only machine the discs on you car once or twice, then you have to buy new ones.

once the hard coating wore thru, my disc got wafer thin and cracked in 2 places.

sounds like you're too hard on your gear Taf???!!!!!

Have Fun

I have heard that when pads are past the 50 % mark they apparently wear down the Rotor significantly quicker, through heat or ?? I have noticed this myself.....I do go through pads rather quick in SM racing but thats to be expected..... I went sintered and get much better life with less over heating but have to deal with very grappy brakes now so I'm going to take your advice and put a thick groove through the middle hoping that wiil make them more progressive....I found the OEM pads glaze over quicker as well.......Good Luck

whatv i will say is that now i've gone to LHRB i use the rear brake for 100% slow nadgery and 75% of flat out to BWE.

so i shouldn't be suprised should i?

i believe they don't machine discs on cars for a different reason. the smaller the disc the hotter it gets until in the end the thinness of the disc IS the problem as opposed to one of the other reasons we've all heard of.

hardened disc? well that was my question so i'm pleased to have an answer to that.

Sometimes after a long period of use the pads become impacted with metal from the disc perhaps causing accelerated disc wear. A light sanding with 80 grit dry sandpaper periodically will freshen up the pads and remove the glaze.

Just got my second wheel set for dries with rotors... I'll see how the new rotor compares to the original

I had that problem on the KTM. The slide pins were rusted. I cleaned them up and lubed them with high temp silicone brake grease, slapped on new pads. Presto...problem gone....so far.

I agree with the above posts. That sounds like something sticking either the pins or in the the rear brake. Might have to take apart and clean the ring around the piston in the rear brake. I have had them do that on streetbikes so it could happen on a dirtbike as well. Could the adjustment on the brake be keeping pressure on the brake or line? Just a thought.
Hope this helps.
