Programmable ignition

Hello folks!
I have had my SEM CDI-unit reprogrammed, but to get the most out of the dynoing I need to be able to program the ignition myself. The trick is that I'm using the MX-version and I would really like to avoid generator and battery. There are a couple of suppliers around. I have found an alternative from HPI:

Also Ignitech have a solution, but it needs battery:
http://www.ignitech.cz/english/aindex.htm

The HPI fits straight in the system and facilitates 2 curves, programmable from PC, but the cost makes you swallow 1-2 times. The Ignitech is quite affordable, but then you need generator or running a total loss system, which incorporates too many parts prone to malfunction and they weigh too much.

Do you have any experience with either system or can tip on other suppliers worth checking out?

I could (possibly) build the whole shebang with stuff from Megasquirt, but I'd better stick to the mechanical side of life...

If you are willing to buy the HPI and save on shipping etc, I live in the Netherlands so can buy it for you and send it to you.

That's very generous, ElSnorro! Maybe I'll take your offer, once having decided.

if you can't go with CDI then this is the ignition i think?

how much was the belguin ignition then mat? i didn't note anything about a bettery although i suspect a 'real' battery, and a torch battery are what you and they really mean!

i have been chasing for something like this for a while also. if they require a bigger order than your single item then let me know a bit more please?

regards

Cheers Taffy!
HPI does replacement stators for SEM, both with and without generator, and programmable CDI's which uses stand-alone HT-coils. The CDI can be programmed with 2 different curves, which you can change by a handlebar switch. The curves can be programmed every 50 rpm!! The unit works with an SEM MX-stator, wthout any condensator (battery) at all. For a CDI, HT coil and a PC adapter they quoted 508€, 550€ including shipping. Since the swedish currency took a nose dive (-20% compared to €) this purchase takes some consideration, even for a well payed guy like me.

i spent hours emailaing them all the info. tossers quite frankly! played along for ever and a day and when i get techie with him he bottled it and said he had to ask somone who knew about ignitions LOL!!!

they are from el paso and they really wanted a husaberg to look at but after trawling the membership etc here i couldn't find anyone who is a UHE member from down that way....

you know that lineaweaver has a license to do vortex ignition systems and modify them etc? i don't know if they are all hall effect or what they are?

why not have a word with electrex the UK importer? everything over here is cheaper at the moment. they are selling their stators on UK ebay so there is your link.

it might be a solution if you can simply quote codes to them and ask for a price?

OK, thanks!
I popped them an email. We'll see what they come up with.

Hello Mats. I think Dyna (Dyna FS) Maybe have something that could be can used.

http://www.dynaonline.com/skins/downloads/Default.aspx

But The hpi you find are maybe smarter if its made to fit Sem, I think the price would come up to that level what brand you desides.
Better for you to have a workeble and easy fit system. I think you have many other things to sort out and maintain on you bike.
So dont overdo somthing that arent proven, so you gets ign-problem in mid-race-seson-losing-race.
Are you going to race this season?

Regards

i have just sent dyna a long letter and hope they will take the time to have a look at this project. they are from glendora, CA near los angelis - pasadena.

The Ignitech programmable CDI is around 140€, compared to HPI´s 350€ (including HT-coil). But you have a point, Patrik! Although it sounds very mature and wise, to come from you! :D

Yes, I will return to the tracks this season. Propably not riding a full season. The race at "Mo i Rana, Norway" is fx 1700km, one way! Or "Kemora, Finland" is 600km to Stockholm, one nights ferry and another 350km in Finland... I'll settle with Knutstorp, Våler, Sviestad and Gelleråsen. But if I start winning, then i might reconsider

mats

what have ignetech told you with regards the fitment to the SEM bikes?

surely the thing to do is get a later flywheel and use the trigger system?

Hello Taffy!
As far as I understood they have different units that will work with either capacitive pickups or inductive pickups. However all units need a stable 12VDC supply. Ignitech have no specific SEM-experience.

I like the small ignition "generator" (SEM-style), providing power to the HT-coil, without any batteries or generators. I do not like the HT-coil being incorporated in the same container (SEM-style), due to heat affecting the life of the CDI.

apparently the internal staple (metal stip found in the potting) is excessively long in the husaberg and they may not be aware of it. for sure you could get a later flywheel with the external pick up right?

how big is this battery anyway! i know what you RR boys are like. it could be a torch battery and you'd still moan about the weight!

regards

Taffy

Haha! :D You're right! We determine the weight of parts as this: -"If you throw it up in the air, and it comes down again, then it is too heavy"

The weight is not my major concern, not for the bike, possibly for the rider! What I don't like is introducing more things that can break down. I have had my share of batteries dieing on me due to vibrations, or having forgot to charge them. More wiring and battery brackets.. I'd rather pay HPI for something that will fit straight on, without any battery at all.

So, Santa came early this year with a programmable CDI from HPI. Will be interesting to see if I can get this black box to work, and even more interesting to see what dyno results to expect with 13,9:1 in compression ratio!

Hi Dr c, could you please let us know what results youve gotten from the hpi cdi? im geting all sorts of electrical problems on my 02 fs650e and to be frank, i just wana rip everything of that doesnt need to be there because at the moment the bike keeps dieing on me due to batterys dieing.. cant understand it myself. basicly if im gona have a battery and starter motor on the bike that i can never use or work even if its all in preportion and there gona corse my bike to die on me whilest 100k away from my house, whats the f**kin point of it being there? to make the bike ****! Yea mate my bikes electric start, cant use it though! what is that about seriously! and flat battery, no spark, what the f*ck! im going to turbo charge it soon anyway so do you sugest taking it all off? to make room? because at the moment the battery and starter motor are making my bike unrideable... what can i do to have a bike that runs with or with out a battery? how much difference in power will i see with a programable stand alone cdi and coil? will it benifit me when i put the turbo on?
cheers

I spent one whole day and one evening at the dyno, trying different setups to make it work. It was misfiring and I had lost 15 RWHP compared to previous runs on the same dyno. I switched back to the SEM-unit (reprogrammed) and it was running nice again! I cannot find any other explanation to it than the HPI-unit was malfunctioning. I'll have to get back to this topic when the equipment is working properly.

Seems like your charging is not working. Have you measured the battery voltage when revving the engine? It should go up with the revs and top out at some 14V.
