Pre 2001 experiences

I have been able to strike up some interest for Husabergs in my small village (banjo-town ::lol: ). Seems they have gotten quite a bad reputation mostly due to poor maintenance among supermoto wannabies/commuters.

Basically my question is as follows: For those who cannot afford a recent model, what (if any) are the weak spots on the old engine pre -01? And are there any years considered more troublesome than others?

I know there are as many opinions as there are owners, but there might be something in general, such as the much discussed 01-02 to ´03 upgrades?

I myself is a recent newcomer to bergs and have no experience with the old engine.

The 1999 and 2000 engine albeit different from that of 2001 and later is quite a good design.

Mine is a 97 FE501E, and I can't complain at all about the bike. I guess it depends on what you plan to do with the bike. I do recreational trail riding, and my previous bike was a KTM EXC 300. Since I wanted a 4Stroke and don't get the money approved to buy something newer (housing in CA is insane), I gave this one a shot and am more than happy with. It runs incredibly strong, no problems to start is, and I am by far not able to use the potential of the bike. There is also a 03 DRZ400E sitting next to it in my garage, but the Husaberg is definitely my first choice.
Of course: a buddy of mine keeps on telling me how much better his 05 KTM EXC 400 is compared to his 03, and that it made definitely sense to buy the new one. If money is not an issue ...

That is a very PRECISE answer. Much appreciated, much less comprehended.... other than that you DO approve of the 99-00 engine.
I take that like I would the word of a true diplomat... :D
And that you are.

Franz:

I used to live there. Ventura, CA. Thirteen years. If I hadn´t moved, there would not be a house, nor a garage to put my Berg in. Not even a Berg. I used to ride a SCHWINN...
Your input is much appreciated, cause we can´t all afford the latest.
But maybe more than a SCHWINN?
Don´t get me wrong, I am freezing over here...
Where is Turlock?? Up north?

Thank You Gentlemen.

Turlock is right in the middle of the central valley, about 100 mls south of Sacramento and 100 mls east of San Francisco. And 1 1/2 hours from some really nice playgrounds ...
BTW: I am a european transplant, too: I moved here a couple of years ago from Austria. By far less troubles with hunters in the woods, believe me! :p
