Possible new to me 08' FE450 owner

Looking at this makes me confused. The whole point of the Husa is because it is a Husa correct? If you want a KTM engine or swap it with a KTM engine than why not just purchase a KTM and save the trouble. If you want the big grunt and power buy a 650 lol, Its like buying a Dodge and putting in a Ford engine?????????

Sorry I just don't get the point

I want the bike I bought.
I also want it to be a torque monster.
So with that said, I'll be bolting in a 650 Husaberg engine :)

Taffy,
I did purchase this bike last night & couldnt be happier :)
The monster torque thing will never change w/me though, so change is needed.
I knew this going in and am not afraid ! lol !.
Question for you sir,
Instead of replacing my entire 450 engine that has been debored to a 388. Can
I use the 550 crank etc. , open the cases & run a 650 liner with the 450 head ? What cc would I jave then ?
How bout same thing with a 650 crank beings the cases have to split anyway ?
Just seems cost effective to get the cubes out of what I have instead of replace entirely
due to them being rare & spendy complete is all. I can cnc the cases.

Thanks in advance---Proflow

you can't do anything with the 450. all the Husaberg engines have to stay at the max CC which is what they were made with. you could stroke it but you'd have to make a packer and nobody has done that yet. Packer, liner, crank assembly with the longer rod, camchain. black box.

Hi

as said, there's no easy answer. the best thing you can do is get new 650 cases and then start looking for a crank with rod, piston and liner. then all you do is swop ecverything over, fit a new longer cam chain and cam chain tensioner blade and then off you go!

you could change the balancer but you'd be OK with yours.

you can buy a used long stroke crank from 2001-2004 and make a 644 or you can buy a 2005-2008 crank which is shorter stroke, stronger and makes 628cc. I like the old 644cc. as long as you didn't race it, it will take any thrashing you give it.

the head you have is the one used for the 450, 550 and the 650 and is under-valved by 650 but it is a good basis.

why don't you just ride and enjoy this bike while you look for cases and crank? in all honesty, the stuff inside (that wasn't mentioned above) is cheap enough used; gearbox, clutch, selector etc.

Taffy

Also, it's always helpful to know from the beginning that the difference between the 3 motors are not in the bore but in the stroke. And look at the pictures. The 450 motor being much shorter than the 650.

10-4, thanks for the info guys :)

I do plan on riding this bike the way it is and enjoying it for sure.
I will start collecting needed internals & when ready, do the overhaul

There are many possibilities. One which nobody done yet is to put in larger bore in. Like 102mm or something. You would have more load on piston skirt so offcenter wrist pin piston and microblue treatment would be recommended. This is custom treatment so probably Travis or similar expert would be helpful. Then you could open up breathing, larger valves bore carb and porting head job. This would give you like two power bumps with original cases. Probably could get close to 500cc with good breathing and proper set up would be sweet. From 450 to 550 to 650 stroke is longer. Visually each is taller about 1cmm. Custom stuff is expensive. If u can get 650 cases for reasonably good price then meybe its best bang for your buck going this way. All depends how much power you wanna buy. I'm saving for a bulletproof 700cc set up to last me 1000 hours. I think it's doable.

I found a set of 01'cases (fx650e) for $280.00 US. Matched set.
Havnt pulled the trigger on them yet though as I still need a crank , liner etc...
Is that a I best buy them now price ?

I take it the e on the end of the fx650e is for electric start, does that mean I lose my kicker or no ?
Also do these cases support the hydro clutch ?
Are these cases what Im looking for ?

Thanks in advance---Proflow

you must buy only 2004-2008 cases. they changed the ignition in 2004 and the two types aren't compatable.

when looking, look for the ignition area. if this is round and three screws it is a no go. If I saw though a 2001-2003 crank, rod, piston, I wouldn't say no, i reckon it's good kit. not very tunable so if you want to go stupid then stick to the 2005-2008 628 crank.

the liner was the same all the way from 2001-2008.

Any chance you might know of a good source for these parts @ a reasonable price ?
I certainly appreciate the advice

I don't think that the price of new cases is unreasonable. about $1,500 to you I guess. you get all new bearings for that money.

alas your journey isn't over....

I've seen shagged out 450 engines for $200 and everythin inside is usable. so look out for shagged 450 bottom end.

other than that you could be looking for some time!

Got ya, Im puting my feelers out there for the 650 parts needed. Too bad the cases I found are 01, price was right for sure !
Beings this bike is a fresh, strong runner, I have patience !
How much of a pain to use those cases anyway ? Ignition change and ?

someone has done it. there's a thread on the subject here.

the TPS would still work so i guess if you swopped and made ignitions work it is all dooable.

you're gradually getting drawn deeper and deeper intot he woods. this is more hanzel and gretl than hanzel and gretl!

So Taffy, can you please tell me any more downsides to the 01' 650 cases minus changing ignition ? Used ign rare or expensive ? I can sell mine right ?
Surely I could source out ignition if thats the big change right ?
I do however want to do this correctly, yet 1500 vs the price on the other cases is huge..
Just saying. That could purchase alot of other internals if you know what Im saying !

well one is hassle and the other is $1,500! I can't answer that. it is up to you.

just know that it is money v headache and hassle

Thanks again for the reply.
So the 01 cases would need complete ignition, ign cover, head pipe ?
Im sure Im missing things as still learning

the exhaust would fit iover and the carb can go over. there's only one real problem and that is the fact that they have two totally different ignition systems.

someone will put you onto the 'kokusan ignition on an old berg' thread. its long its out there and someone will drop you a link for it if you don't find it here first.

Taffy

Thanks Taffy,
I actually just a min. ago pulled the trigger on those 01'cases.
Paid very lil money for them & if dont find newer I'll have something to work with.
At least its a start even if the hard way ! lol.
Worst case, sell them right ? Thats what I figure anyway.
Still on a parts hunt !

Thanks again for the help bud :)

Hi there, have a look at this thread, it will give you an idea of what you are in for, regarding the igintion conversion for the 2001 to 2003 cases, to the later 04 to 08 kokusan ignition

The main things you will need for converting your 450 to 650 will be engine cases, crankshaft, conrod, piston and liner, timing chain, camshaft, exhaust header and cdi unit.

It may be cheaper to look around some more for a complete 650 engine, rather than scratching one together from spare parts? I suppose at the end of the day it will depend on whats available on ebay or similar sites, and what the price is.
