i've been assessing pistons and dimensions for some time and as i sell stuff i have had a problem i couldn't cure till today!
basically, all the old pistons from the 470, 550 and 650s have a deck 12.7-13.3 above the gudgeon pin.
the 2004+ 550 shares the 13.3 measurement but the 450 is 14.3 and domed while the 650 is 14.3 and dished.
no aftermarket pistons would appear to be available for the last two engines.
however, i now have one in stock. it is 14.3mm and it is mildly domed at 2mm. it also has the same depth pockets as the OEM. n o, i won't say what it's off except to say that it's made by woessner.
now the 470 aftermarket rod i do is actually 1mm shorter so now this piston with that rod kit will work. named after the neuclear bomb i'm calling it the 'tall boy'.
an oem 450 rod is £284 and the piston is £254 making it £538. my rod is £170 and the piston £150 for a total of £320.
the compression of the 450 comes down a fraction as the dome on that is about 3mm high and it's 2mm on this kit. the dome is the same as the 470s though.
i can't wait to try it in a 2004+ 550 (with a mill off the squish) or even a 650. i think i would like to plain the crown flat initially and then plain it to 1mm dome before going the whole hog....
i am trying to get the ignition sorted as i think a 650 with all this is going to cry....
anyway, it has made my bloody day! i look forward to some of you ******* wanting to try it ASAP!!!
regards
